Though Ms. Orshansky and President Johnson were well intentioned in trying to quickly develop a metric to define the poverty line, it was overly simplistic. Now, 60+ years later, it is not at all representative of modern family expenses. Lawmakers, aware of this but too chicken shit to reform it out concern of what it would do to their political careers have kicked this can of government issued beans down the road.

Thanks for this. Of course "avoiding eviction altogether by increasing affordability" is key here and many cuts are coming to rent assistance pgms that will only make stability harder for low-income tenants. Why the housing system expects tenants to have a steady income every month for decades is puzzling and disturbing.

Excellent presentation! You touched on so many pain points that I have experienced as a woman and mother, and witnessed as a health care professional. My children were stolen by CPS and my rights wrongfully terminated 12/2019, and I have spent my time since then networking and researching to figure out solutions to the many problems in our society. This presentation offers so many insights that I have known to be true and pulled them together so that they can be observed and understood by others! Thank you Jessica! And Thank you to the Institute for making these materials available for the public!!

Per minutes leading up to 37:00, It's apparent. Despite having all the resources... White America has done a very bad job at controlling, regulating, and penalizing its own people and their tendencies to have sentiments that perpetuate historic oppression of nonimmigrant black American families. It isn't the job of black people to fix white people. Folks eventually need to be willing to take out their own trash. The same applies to black American families. When underfunded to solve their own issues, the funding must be provided.

This, renting out to Section 8s, is how Jared Kushner made enough money to go into mortgages on houses he could not afford either, with the lenders being sure that he would pay based on the fact that the Section 8s were being paid regularly.

LATINX: ANOTHER RACIAL SLUR FOR HISPANOS/LATINOS.....
@MarcVL1234 Жыл бұрын
Should people use Latinx, when the majority of people who may be classified as, or who identify as Hispanic or Latino, don't like it? Isn't it a form of language imperialism? I very much believe trans people exist from experience, am willing to believe the experience of something I don't quite get in the way of gender fluidity, but Romance languages are heavily gendered, as in, linguistic gender. Linguistic gender is historical, & in some languages today, not even related to anything like sexuality. Linguistic "gender" can be animate / living / human / rational vs inanimate / non-living / nonhuman /irrational too, instead of male vs female. Indo-European languages all evolved from a language that only had the animate vs inanimate gender distinction. Gender, again, having originated as a phenomenon in linguistics. I, personally, don't see why we don't do away w it in English entirely, even the animate vs inanimate part. We've had our perfect pronoun all along. No one is he, or she, or they, or anything. They're it. It is fine. Cis, trans, however you identify, it is fine. Only the cultural bias that's objectifying or dehumanizing stands in the way. Languages that don't distinguish, & essentially have people be "it" lose anything. People are things. Because they're living things. Living, feeling, thinking things are still things, because what's so bad about things anyway?

Also, the meal plans were based upon meals of peanut butter, 3 meals a day. This was an emergency diet, and not a sustainable one. Thereby, the poverty line is fundamentally flawed. Many Americans are struggling to pay rent, utilities and transportation expenses. If the poverty threshold is corrected to reflect the actual cost of living, wages & support would increase for many everyday Americans. Including support for small businesses, average households & college tuitions.

What you have missed is that the data she used was the lowest possible one, defined by the USDA in 1961 as "temporary or emergency use when funds are low.” It isn't a no thrills food plan. It's a survival diet not meant to be sustainable long term.
@IRP_UW Жыл бұрын
That's true -- Orshansky created measures based on two food plans. Her preference was for the higher/more generous of the two plans to form the basis of the poverty measure, but such a measure would have defined roughly a third of the country as being in poverty. Political leadership had some issues with the optics of that, so the survival diet version of the measure was adopted.
@SiriusXAim Жыл бұрын
@@IRP_UW Didn't know about the political pressure part. Tough this perfectly shows how this statistic is completely inadequate in measuring poverty. It's also completely outdated, and the only economic variable still not updated since that time.

When someone is promoted based upon their merit, we say they were promoted meritocratically. So the real question you should be asking is what is merit. Merit: the quality of being particularly good or worthy, especially so as to deserve praise or reward. What you and others like you have failed to comprehend is that the position a person occupies in our society is the reward given to them based upon their merit. They may not necessarily be the best candidate for that position however they have done something that someone found valuable enough to warrant rewarding that person with that particular position based upon merit not necessarily connected to their ability to perform the duties of that position. It is often said that the children of rich people do not earn their inheritance because they did not work for it. The reality is that an inheritance is not a sure thing. It has to be earned. The way to earn your inheritance is to do the things that your parents expect of you. They will then reward you with an inheritance based upon your merit. Inheritance is therefore a meritocratic process.

Are you a sociologist or are you doing social philosophy? Because it appears you’re doing the latter
@psychicspy4 ай бұрын
@Sazi_de_Afrikan You are an exceptional person just for simply responding so intelligently. The problem with society is that those who are intelligent believe that everyone else is just like them. They are not. Some are far, far, from being the same in intelligence. I was attempting to reach a few people on the edge of understanding by pointing out that merit is in the eyes of the beholder. Some of the injustices they believe they are whitness to are actuall the products of meritocracy.

I definitely commend u doing such a great job on your information or your study Madison Wisconsin definitely gets a higher score A+ for the fact based information on the very dark disposal disparities embarrassing and bigotry secrets of Wisconsin justice system. However this is not your first study this is another addition to the many studies. So why talk about something that is causing so much harm to families in the black communities and yet not protest for change or does it look good on paper or is it away to continue stimulating the same narrative of black history. To be able to give facts of corruption arbitration perverion that goes on behind the community and then to bring the truth to the attention is like being slapped in the face. The historical system's based on the black history is the same poverty, prison, and bigotry. So if I have been born under your own arrogance betrayal and now the the original Corruptors have created a stream of systems that resembles the origin of their own corruptions, u have confidence conversation convincing many that your voice to concern when in fact nothing has changed but u might get a standing ovation or get notified of a better job. None of this will protect families it's a sick literally

I 100% agree on what the Dr. Poehlmann-Tynan shared on how important it is for law enforcement officials to implement and utilize the use of guidelines for doing arrest in front of children. I have seen this first hand and is tough to watch children go through this traumatizing event. They do not deserve to go through this.

Relative poverty causes hopelessness and suicide. I lived in NYC in the 1980s. It was the only time in my life I felt empowered to improve my life/health. I made a lousy wage and lived in a little room but I had PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION. I grew up in a poor family. We didn't have a car. In NYC for the first time in my life I at least had a way to get to wherever I needed to be, work, self help programs free events. It was the first time in my life I had the ability to get around like anyone else. This took care of at least 50 percent of my mental health issues
