One of the greatest memories of my 64 year life is that I got to train with Sensei Mikami off and on from 1974 - the 80s. He sat all my kyu exams and my Nidan exam, which only 2 of 8 of us passed. My greatest idol, and a true living legend.

There is a lot of criticism of these guys here but remember, kumite is usually toward the end of the second class and they have been training hard (virtually without a break) for two hours likely following a morning class of two hours and an hour of light training before lunch. Hard to look great when you can barely stand. I guarantee some of them have had to go throw up.

Shihan(Master) Hideo Ochi is a legend. He is one of the very nice shihan in JKA. While most japanese karate masters tend to be very strict. Ochi-Shihan tends to be joyful and have full sense of humor to his students. At least the two girls here had good performance. Time will come that their forms would be corrected by senior senseis or masters. Here is a JKA examination in Norway. She sinks into the kokutsu dachi in the opening phase. Who introduced that into the kata.? Is there a bunkai rational behind that,or is it purely aesthetics. Seems that it’s her interpretation to emphasise she likes a long deep back stance. Even that is too long.! Lots of mistakes in her basic form .
