A backdraft occurs when oxygen is suddenly introduced to a fire that has been starved of air, such as in a sealed or nearly-closed space. When a fire burns in low oxygen conditions, it can still produce hot gases and smoke. If a door or window is opened, or a ventilation hole is cut in the roof, the influx of fresh air can cause those gases to ignite explosively, leading to a violent burst of flames.

When I was 10 years old we had a chimney fire. I remember this huge firefighter wrapping blankets around me. I'll never forget it. When I see the VFD I am reminded of that night in 1979.

I had a family member who, with a bunch of his colleagues, traveled down to Ground Zero to hand out food from the fast food organization they worked for at the time. He along with almost all of the colleagues who were there that day, have died. They died due to bizarre illnesses. My family member had a long suffering GI issue, but I believe the shots finished him.

I remember when this happened. I was a firefighter at Independent Engine Company #93 in Red Bank, NJ, at the time. I also recall being in a house in FDNY. Saw pieces of this structure and was told these were pieces of the supermarket where the 6 firefighters died. It was being investigated as a arson case so I was told.😢😢😢 RIP in piece my brothers.

I used to think emergency services as they had a certain level of authority or something. Like, police at the top, then fire, then ambulance. But I think firefighters are braver and stronger than police officers. Police officers are supposed to be peace keepers. Firefighters take care of all medical calls and see lots of things and then the heavy fires and everything else.

Turnout times are given way too much weight. You should lower your turnout times by building a culture of honor and pride vs FEAR. NFPA is a terrible organization and pushing for 60 seconds for EMS and 80 seconds for Fire will get people hurt or killed. Glad to see a chief that realizes what's important. It's not about metrics.

There are 206 bones in the human body. 40% of the 9/11 victims were never found. Not even a single bone fragment? Nothing... what scares me the most is just the heat itself, i mean sometimes i'd make fires in my fireplace that were hot enough to make me move from being uncomfortable, and I was already far away from a fire that isn't big at all. To be inside of such a massive fireball. Terrifying.
