All synth sounds and FX used are the Kodamo Mask1, sequenced, sampled and processed using my Akai MPC Live II. The Mask1's bitmask oscillators, combined with its noise generator and characterful filter, have plenty of flavour played at their natural pitch and tempo. But I find they sound even better pitched down several octaves on the MPC. The MPC also allows me to sequence the midi CC values in the Mask1, which opens up more possibilities particularly for tempo-synced modulation.

Interesting comparison. Thanks for putting it together. I'm not a huge fan of the weird overtones you get with many of them as I struggle to make them fit musically. I would go with the OPS7 out of this lineup. It would be interesting to hear sweeps on the "dirty/grungy" FM synths everyone seem to be fans of like the DX100, FB-01, TX81z etc.

Thanks for listening. I liked the way OPS7 sounded on the sweep, I think all the Plogue synths sound great. I bought the PortaFM and ChipsynthMD but haven't delved to deeply into them yet. Maybe I'll get my hands on some of those old Yamahas someday and I can cover them also.

If the kyra is actually frequency modulation instead of PM, then thats definitely the reason you cant get classic PM levels of modulation. FM has a different scalar so you need a lot more gain on the operator amplitudes to get the same amount of harmonics than PM

That was a pretty interesting sweep test! I have the argon 8 the opsix and the essence fm. I don't have the prologue but I do have an R3 which also has a vpm engine. Now I'm curious how that will sweep! I'm impressed now that I've heard prologue achieve that, definitely caught my attention. I really like the kodamo though as far as getting extreme ranges, and it really has the smooth envelopes as well with a gentle kind of beating you can hear like a little AM in there (you can also easily control that as a parameter how much you want to have). However one thing that can make up for the reduced 2 op sweep range on the opsix, is adding fm feedback and including user algorithms to get more extreme mod ranges. I actually have made many presets with the user algorithms and it is a pretty fun thing to do. I actually struggle at times on essence fm to know how to combine the operators and carriers when i use the touch screen but that's likely due to my own need to better understand how to drag those properly on the screen.
@jbowmanmusicАй бұрын
Thanks, I would be interested to learn if the R3 sounds anything like the Prologue. The manual for the Prologue says the VPM engine was newly developed for the Prologue, so I would be surprised if there is anything quite like it in their prior synths. The Kronos has a VPM engine, for example, and from the demos I have listened to it sounds nothing like the Prologue. I know what you mean about the beating, but haven't actually thought of using that musically - that's a great idea. Yeah the 4- and 6-op synths can add extra operators to the stack to increase the modulation. In my experience feedback doesn't quite get the same effect as high modulation in a 2-op set-up. Incidentally feedback on the Prologue is interesting, because it does not turn into noise at high settings. The VPM engine has a separate noise parameter, presumably for that reason. I have never quite got to grips with setting up complex use algorithms on the EssenceFM - simple linear stacks are easy to achieve with the touchscreen (e.g. operator 3 into operator 2 into operator 1) and 90% of the time that is enough for me. When trying to feed two modulators into a single carrier (e.g. operator 3 and operator 2 into operator 1) I find that a bit more fiddly to set up, and it takes a few goes to achieve, although it's not a big problem.

@jbowmanmusicАй бұрын
@pedrogomis hi, I had started to prepare a detailed comparison between them when I ran into a significant issue with the envelopes in one of them, which is shown in this patch. I wonder if it is obvious, or whether it is not something a listener can detect - please let me know if you can hear what the issue is.
@pedrogomisАй бұрын
@@jbowmanmusic kyra not so smooth, i listen a little jump in the sound in second 40 and 55
@jbowmanmusicАй бұрын
Yes you got it. The problem is that if the release portion of a note is still ringing out, and you repeat the note, rather than starting from 0, the attack portion of the envelope of the repeated note restarts at the level of the previous note. This makes it difficult to use for pads as you can hear at second 40 and 55. I also agree with you that the Mask1 resonant filter sounds nicer. The Kyra has some plus points, and a lot of potential in theory, but overall I keep running into problems with it that make me prefer the Mask1.

Good work. An interesting option would be to try and do the same with older FM hardware like the old Yamahas (i.e.FB01) Because of their limited resolution you get interesting alising effects. Also sweeps with a much higher disparity between the C and M frequencies will create bigger differences between each system. You can hear the earlier Yamaha FM machines in my YT series FM Synthesis A Catalogue Of Materials video series.
