Larry and Magic Johnson are linked together in basketball fans’ minds and can never be separated. It’s impossible to consider one without the other one popping into the conversation. The two of them caused exponential growth in the NBA’s fanbase. Just a few years before they came to the league, the NBA Finals (the championship series) were being shown on tape delay. Larry and Magic changed EVERYTHING about basketball. As their careers were starting to wind down, Michael emerged from the mist and assumed the dominant role in basketball. It’s hard to argue with the conclusion that the greatest era in basketball began when Magic and Larry arrived and lasted until Michael hit the shot to defeat Utah for Chicago’s sixth championship. Nothing that has come since can hold a candle to that era.

Context for Piston game: 5th out five games Pistons up 2 with seconds left in the game for who plays in the next round. Bird steals the inbound pass and dishes it off for the 2 point play and 1 second left on the game clock Boston wins by one point and go to the nest series

For those who think Larry Bird was not as good as he really was. This comment is for those who never had the chance to see him play. At that time it was not about the individual stats it was about the win. But if you need some stats here you go: Here are some of Larry Bird's notable career achievements and statistics: Three-time NBA champion (1981, 1984, 1986); Two-time NBA Finals MVP (1984, 1986); Three-time NBA MVP (1984-86); 12-time NBA All-Star (1980-88, 1990-92); Nine-time All-NBA First Team (1980-88); All-NBA Second Team (1990); Three-time All-NBA Defensive Second Team (1982-84); NBA Rookie of the Year (1980); NBA All-Rookie Team (1980); Three-time NBA Three-Point Contest champion (1986-88); Career-high in points: 60 (March 12, 1985) - - tied for franchise record with Jayson Tatum; Named NBA Coach of the Year (1998); and Named NBA Executive of the Year (2012). Larry Bird was the first player to accomplish the 50-40-90 achievement, and one of two players to achieve the feat in . multiple seasons. Home Career averages: 24.3 points per game 10.0 rebounds per game 6.3 assists per game 88.6% free throw percentage 49.6% field goal percentage 37.6% 3-point percentage Now we can't forget that Bird famously played with two injured ankles and a notoriously cranky back that forced him to lay down on the floor during practice breaks. He likely used these crutches after season-ending foot surgery just six games into the 1988-89 season

Pat Riley is a Hall of Fame coach, won multiple titles. He said if the game is on the line he wants Michael Jordan to take the shot, if his life was on the line he wanted Bird shooting the ball.

This video really doesn't show a lot about Bird. His health problems, predicting plays all the time, his relationship with Magic Johnson, his amazing passing, and his grade A trash talking lol He was not only a great player, but a great team mate and friend. Please do more of his videos. ❤

6-0 in the finals, 6 finals MVPs, 10 scoring titles, 9 times all defensive team, incl. one time defensive player of the year. And there are 4 players in NBA history who won the championship, the finals MVP, the regular season MVP, the scoring title and all defensive team, in one season. Those players are, Michael Jordan, Michael Jordan, Michael Jordan and Michael Jordan. Enough said.

Larry had court IQ, passing fantastic, great shooter and rebound, clutch shooter, trash talker. He was the all around package deal. And he didn't need to be muscle bound to do it either. Don't forget how he played injured frequently.

LARRY BIRD is the greatest basketball player ever in human history. He figured out the game at the highest level with zero athleticism but with pure heart and determination and skill.....if he had even 10% of whatever Magic or Jordan had in athleticsm wise....larry would have averaged 50 10 and 10 with 10 rings, no problem.

Larry Bird was the most fun to watch of all time. Back then, so many games were won at the last second with 1 second on the clock. It was so much fun to watch. Plus, Larry played injured. He would come to the game from the hospital, play better than everybody else on the floor or go straight to the hospital after the game. He played multiple games with double vision and played games where his back was so bad that he had to lay on the floor on the sidelines and yet he remained clutch to the end.

Context of the times, my friend. This was the 70s, with riots, forced bussing, rampant drug problems, resentment, and overt racism (going ways in a failing NBA, as Cedric Maxwell explains in the full documentary), Courtship of Rivals, based on Larry's and Magic's book, When the Game Was Ours. You're getting bits and pieces of it here. I think you need to watch Bird's Ultimate Mixtape, then the full documentary to truly understand where Larry came from and what made him unique. Larry, surprisingly and to his credit, didn't care about race. He got the bullying when he joined the Celtics and talked with his game. But he was and remains the king of the trash talkers. Whomever put this video together did a terrible job. But you did an admirable job with your reaction. 😃

What needs to be understood is back then as Larry was joining the NBA.. there were few marketable players... Cocaine addiction was rampant.. games were taped delayed and played late at night after eruns and B/W movies. After Bird and Magic came aboard they put the NBA on the map.. attendance was high..prime time TV, attendance, rivary, from coast to coast.... etc... and it was because (not to be racist) of an unique and gifted white basketball player... similar to whats happening today in the WNBA with Caitlin Clark.... minus the drugs.
