Switch to lard instead of shortening
@wildwoodholler7 күн бұрын
@@ItsMefromSnuffys lard is definitely better, and it was, of course, always used in biscuit-making back in the day. I don’t buy lard anymore so always use shortening. Thanks for dropping by and commenting.

OMGoodness! I love you! I’m going to make this in the morning. When I was just a girl, I’d say about 5 years old, there was this lady named Ingrid and she was German, but I would go to her house occasionally and she would make this chocolate stuff and I’m willing to bet this is the exact recipe. I’ve really missed it over the years. I thought maybe she just made the cookies and serve chocolate putting and tried it, but mine never tasted like hers. I was always sooooo fond of it but couldn’t figure out how she made it. It dawned on me when I watched you make your chocolate gravy. I’ll bet a million she made it just like you did. Thank you so very much. You’ve blessed this ol’ girl’s heart. I was born and raised in the mountains of WV. I miss home so much. 😢 Thanks again! 😘

@@tootsiea4064 Oh wow! I hope this is the recipe you’re looking for! It’s delicious any way it’s served, but we ate it with our biscuits for breakfast most of the time. My momma would make those big cat-head biscuits, and we’d dip them in our chocolate gravy… soooo good! Let me know how yours turns out! So nice to connect with another West Virginia girl…thanks for visiting!

Hi Mary, welcome, from the state of West Virginia in the USA! So glad you stopped by! I have always done a lot of hand sewing, too. I had a hard time, at first, with this new concept of leaving raw edges exposed…lol. But, it is a nice change from “the rules” of stitching. Thanks for stopping by!

@@wildwoodholler We lived in New Jersey for about 11 years, we emigrated to the USA in 1956 from Scotland and then moved to New Zealand 1967. We visited West Virginia one year while on vacation the scenery was out of this world. It was a pleasure watching your video. I have enough fabric scraps (doing quilting) but have started collecting beads, buttons and lace etc. I don’t know if I will get much accomplished as I am 90 years old but will try my best. Best wishes.

I grew up watching my Grandma, my mother and my aunts making biscuits this way, I have seen my mom have a little bit of bacon grease in the skillet and when she got the biscuit made, she would dip the biscuit and then turn it over so the tops would have the grease on top instead of spooning it over the top, just her way and they looked as perfect as these.

As long as there’s bacon grease on the tops is all that matters… lol. Thanks for stopping by.

What do you do with these pieces ?
@wildwoodholler5 ай бұрын
I use these for journal covers, zippered pouches, wall hangings, etc., although “slow stitching” is meant to be a meditative process, and one does it for relaxation and freedom from the “rules” of sewing . There are really no rules in slow stitching. Each person uses the pieces for different things or just for the sheer pleasure of hand stitching, using scrap fabrics, trims, buttons, etc., so that you aren’t cutting into your good materials. It’s also a good way to practice hand stitching and embroidery stitches. It’s really up to you! Happy stitching!

Mom did hers in a wooden bowl like that I turn mine in a ceramic bowl and roll my dough (always whole buttermilk) out on floured wax paper. Then I cut out biscuits with a floured tin can & bake on cookie sheet at 500 degrees. BUT I just seasoned my large Lodge skillet and want to try some in the cast iron. Thanks.

I LOVE the old wooden bowls! I have a really nice one that I bought at a yard sale several years ago for just $10, which was a great price. The lady even told me the story of how she got it….❤️Your biscuits sound delicious! I’m sure you’ll like baking them in the iron skillet. As for the tin can, it’s nice to hear of someone else using what others would toss in the garbage. We used to chop cabbage to make kraut with two cream cans, when the ends were attached with wax. They were great for that. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Do you heat your cast iron pan before putting the biscuits in?

I don’t preheat. I just use a paper towel to rub a good coat of bacon grease or shortening on the bottom and sides of my iron skillet. Then, I just plop them biscuits right in and bake!

Great technique on working the dumpling dough! My mother had a zigzag rolling cutter that she would use to cut up her dumplings, so I grew up with ziggy zag dumplings. Her own signature dumplings, I guess. And she always used yellow food coloring. Your final product looks perfect! I'll have to make some and let you know how bad I botched it. 😅

Look good!! Did your mama and grand mama ever use oil like corn oil to make biscuit if so please let me know!! Thank you!
@wildwoodholler9 ай бұрын
Thank you! The only time they would have used oil is if they didn’t have lard or shortening. The really old time way of making biscuits was using lard, and of course, back in the old days, there was no self-rising flour, so salt and baking powder would have been added. I mostly use shortening now (I guess it’s not as bad for our health), but do occasionally use lard that I have saved from frying bacon. If you do use some type of oil, the biscuits will definitely taste differently.

@wildwoodholler11 ай бұрын
Actually, a good pudding has eggs in it. But over in the video, I do say this is a pudding, because it does have the consistency of pudding. As I said, we always called this chocolate gravy. When my mom made homemade vanilla or chocolate pudding, she used eggs, which gives it a richer, creamier flavor. Thanks for visiting my channel.
