It’s the difference between giving a concert to yourself in your own skull (bad modern singers) and sending the sound out into the audience (greatest singers of all time). The bad singers are all singing with a collapsed acoustic box, voice is too far back, and lack of chest voice in their sound.😢 And almost nobody knows how to correct them, and would they even listen to correction if someone showed them how to do it right? As Pavarotti said, it could take 10 years to get the correct sound for the voice, and people do not seem to want to improve. I saw a video of Dimitrova (my teacher’s teacher) singing Turandot with Placido, and the difference in their technique is stark. Dimitrova is setting up the acoustic box after each phrase, is standing up straight and tall to get the “longest pipe,” and isn’t collapsing at all; Placido is bent over and compressed without air to support his voice. It’s not that these people have bad instruments; they have improper technique.

Del Monaco is an ideal Chenier but Callas is miscast. This music reveals all the technical problems in her uneven registers. Just listen to those holes going in and out of the passaggio at 1:20. The voice simply stops resonating.

Prácticamente ninguna soprano (incluida Millo aquí) cumplen con lo que Verdi pide en la partitura: cerrar el aria con el Sib en la sílaba "-ne" de "maledizione", ascendiendo (sin pausa) del Fa precedente en "-zio". En casi todas las versiones que conozco (hay excepciones, desde luego) las sopranos optan por hacerlo con la palabra "maledizioooooon", pues es más fácil y menos arriesgado.

PD, ein lyrischer Tenor, der eine DER dramatischen Rollen der Opernliteratur über viele Jahre sang. Schön in den lyrischen Passagen, ohne jede vokal-dramatische Potenz wenn es erforderlich war. Kaufmann's crooning is embarrassing. He once had a semblance of a proper tenor voice and even sounded a lot like Vickers - then it all went wrong. If you hear him live, the voice is small and husky

There’s no comparison between Giacomini and Kaufmann. Giacomini was the Rolls-Royce of dramatic tenors-affondo and squillo for days. He never needed a microphone. Kaufmann’s upper register is really rough here-constricted, and lacking release and squillo. BTW, Giacomini was performing the entire opera, Kaufmann just trying to sing the aria. RIP Giacomini.

The High B is also flat.. so are many of the chest notes.. Callas does the best job with this aria and the role

I really don’t see the difference, except that Corelli has a marvelous voice in comparison to the other guys, but they have pretty good voices too. It is as if you were trying to compare Corelli to Carusso, then I’d say Carusso is unbeatable.
