Worked the Railways and the Botany tanneries, saw Frank Hyde in the flesh at the SCG Members on Grand Final Day 1981. I worked with Kerry Burke who played for Souths losing Grand Final side. But every line, every image, from the red rattlers passing Newtown to the Commission flats out west, when rugby league was truly tribal, brings grown men past their prime like myself to tears because we are mourning times gone forever, lost youth. A work of genius.

what were the Botany tanneries? pardon my ignorance...
@Matonrules6 күн бұрын
@@markwatkins6618 Hi, The tannery I worked for at Botany received kangaroo skins by the thousands from pro shooters, maggots and all, and they tanned the skins with a poisonous concoction ending up with a huge pile of finished skins for export, if memory serves. They were stopped due to pollution laws as time passed after a long history going back to the 1860s. I returned to Sydney from the bush and got a job there within two hours of arriving. Very harsh conditions and I was happy to move on to much better things within three months. Cheers

Normally songs are about love and relationships and I love that this song is about a subject that doesn't come up a lot in music.....It's saw raw and honest.

20 years after this song we are now close to having gambling reform. This song was a catalyst. Good on yas. In 2003 I walked into a pokies sat down and asked " think about what your doing?" Venue called jacks on me. I was locked for the night. Whitlams inspired me to do that. Now we know more about gambling addiction. Fuck nsw gambling lobby

Tim didn't say g'day to Perry Keyes when he passed him at 1:25. The writer of this song. Check his version. I'm sure Tim would agree.

The sacking of Whitlam would have to be one of the main reasons that people are pushing for a republic with the Morrison portfolio fiasco another political fubar.... Unfortunately it took COVID-19 to bring out the best and worst in our current politicians. It's certainly not the Australia I remember from the year 2000 with the lucky country moniker severely tarnished. 😎🇦🇺👍

Have never been taught the story of Ned Kelly. Am 59. Taught loads about British history shit. Farming. Captn Cook. 1st & 2nd WW. Pointless shit. Didn't learn about politics or commerce, stuff I should know. Learning now, but a little bit late. Self-taught, then UNI. anyway. White rich c+nts, putting down white working people. (Don't start me on what they think about other races.) The education system is not working.

Oh, wow, that was a long time ago when I was working with Groundswell Productions and Paul Brown from The Nightwalkers took me to The Sandringham in Newtown to meet Tim Friedman. It was then that I mentioned what we were endeavouring to do to put live music back on the menu - and mentioned those immortal words "I wish I knew the right words to say, to blow up the pokies and throw them away". Tim asked if he could borrow that line, and I let him. The thing was that we did achieve the goal from it too, by showing how live music can pay. Now I have the fledgling London Charm here in London, England, but this time it's more about finding ways for people to just safely meet up in general around the love of the right type of live music played at the right place with the right atmosphere.

She paints pictures on the wall She eats all of the garden And has an aversion to conviction And she calls her dog "the bear" In love with this girl And with her town as well Walking 'round the rainy city What a pity there's things to do at home She paints pictures on the wall I awake to see the feelings from the night before She eats all of the garden, it's a jungle out there And we won't return by dawn If I had three lives I'd marry her in two I'm dreaming of a time That we sit when the music stops She has an aversion to conviction She's more confused than ever Won't pay her fines and wonders when the cops will get her She calls her dog "the bear" And walks me with him to the corner In her pyjamas
