Play, say, the first string with your index finger. Follow the stroke through until it rests on the second string. That’s a rest stroke.

Hi Rob, I was just curious why you never tune to standard 440 and you always tune lower? I love your playing!
@RobMacKillop121 күн бұрын
@@gimpyjwilliams Thanks. I normally use gut strings, and want the first string to last more than just a few hours. So, that’s one of the reasons I tune lower. Plus, historically pitch was lower. There is nothing ‘correct’ about A = 440, which was brought about for orchestral players. These days I just tune to where the guitar sounds best on any given day.
@tayzar138122 күн бұрын
I have just switched to playing with no nails. Do you use low tension strings or hight tension strings? Which tension is better for playing with flesh? Thank you.
@RobMacKillop122 күн бұрын
I use high tension BUT tuned down a tone or semitone. If you want it at modern pitch where A=440hz, then I would use a lighter set. But, really, high tension at a lower pitch generally sounds much better.

Many spontaneous musicians use odd measures and sudden twists. Early music, folk artists like Blind Lemon, unique cats like Django and tunesmiths like the Beatles. All have been accused of naive incompetence except Stravinsky and avant guarde.In the highest forms it's genius, but we all know the ancients, bluesmen, gypsies and scousers hit good phrases out of luck!😂 Jokes aside, the most musical and the sweetest Baroque instrument (not brash) and a very expressive rendition. I am sure you are familiar with Andersen's tale "The nightingale" with its theme of real vs clockwork singing bird.

Yes, I am. Thanks for the comments. I resisted 'editing' the scores, apart from one or two obvious mistakes - right fret, wrong string, for instance, which is quite common in early tablatures. I ended up recording a whole album of Foscarini's music, available currently in CD format only, from Aventino Music. They will release download and streaming versions in February.

@ The company was one guy in Edinburgh, who went under the name of Fidra ukuleles. It’s a tenor, and I use 5ths-tuning strings from Aquila, but you could use other strings for regular ukulele tuning if you want. The instrument with case cost me £1400, and is in excellent condition at a great price. Shipping would need to be added.

@juancarlosharo8911Ай бұрын
@@RobMacKillop1 Thank you very much for answer me.
@RobMacKillop1Ай бұрын
@@juancarlosharo8911 Have a read of this page of my website: rmclassicalguitar.com/multi-string-guitars/ There are two main tunings. One is named after Narciso Yepes: standard 6-string tuning, then a low C for the 7th string. Then it goes UP to A#, down a tone to G#, down another tone to F#. The reason for this is so that all notes of the chromatic scale can have sympathetic resonance. The other tuning has stepped basses for the lowest four strings: DCBA. This is sometimes called Baroque tuning, sometimes Romantic tuning. Aquila-corde sell full sets for each of the two tunings: Yepes: aquilacorde.com/en/shop/modern-instrument-string-sets/10-strings-classical-guitar/accordatura-yepes-chitarra-a-10-corde/ and Baroque (referred to here as Diatonic) aquilacorde.com/en/shop/modern-instrument-string-sets/10-strings-classical-guitar/10-strings-classical-guitar-baroque-tuning/ The 8-string guitar I found frustrating as often the bass notes had to be fingered by the left hand, whereas on the 10-string, often the bass notes would be open strings.
@juancarlosharo8911Ай бұрын
@@RobMacKillop1 Thank you very much for the information. The article is wonderful and very educational. I appreciate the links for the string sets according to the tuning. Is there the possibility of tuning like the 8-string? I mean: From bass to treble F#BEADgbe or is this option not viable?

I recently found out that Robert Gordon of Straloch is my 10th great grandfather. Videos of players of his book of lute music brought me here. You are an amazing musician and I’ve really enjoyed your listening to your playing. Sending warm holiday greetings from cold and snowy Chicago. 🙏
@RobMacKillop1Ай бұрын
Well, that's not a comment I expected. Nice to make contact 😎 Thanks to your tenth great grandfather we have some beautiful lute music. Actually, his manuscript got lost in the 19th century, but was copied thankfully, but only partially. The copyist said he missed out many of the dances, which everyone knew anyway. But at least his copy survives, and it has many fine tunes in it. He was also a superb cartographer, as you probably know, and I have a fine reproduction on my wall of his map of Scotland. Best wishes to you from a surprisingly mild Edinburgh! Rob
@rknrlgrl6146Ай бұрын
Thank you for responding! Also, thank you for that info and yes, I’ve been reading anything I can find about Robert Gordon. Apparently our Scottish roots run deep as I was able to trace my earliest relative to the birth year of 990 which is pretty amazing. My genealogy journey has been fascinating since I wasn’t aware of my family’s Scottish roots (mostly English and Irish on my Grandmothers side). I guess my last name “Scott” might have been my first clue ;) I visited Edinburgh in 2022 with family and absolutely loved the city and got to see some really great local Scottish folk musicians which was one of the highlights of the visit. Toured my way around the city having no idea that I had roots in Scotland. Excited to visit again and explore more of my family’s roots while there. Anyway, enough about me. Again, thank you for your response and thank you for sharing your beautiful acoustic playing here on KZbin. I’ll be listening, enjoying it, and sharing it over here across the pond :)

@@RobMacKillop1 Thanks Rob -- do you think they might break? (I'm not so concerned about the stress on the neck as I use a Gibson Hummingbird.) What scale length is your Ramirez? My Gibson is just over 25 inches
@RobMacKillop1Ай бұрын
@@docdavetaviner There is a possibility they would break, but you should get a feel for that when tuning up for the first time. I would tune to A, then over a week slowly, incrementally, tune up to where you want to go if it still feels ok. Don’t blame me if you break your strings or guitar! You could tune to A and then use a capo on the 2nd fret? If the Hummingbird has 14 frets to the body, the capo would make that 12, just like a classical guitar. My Ramirez was an unusual 666mm, I’ve no idea what that is in inches. Good luck!
@docdavetavinerАй бұрын
@@RobMacKillop1 Your Ramirez is an inch longer than my Gibson then, so that works in my favour, maybe to the extent that if I tuned to B-flat, the strings would have the same tension on my Gibson as they do on your Ramirez tuned to A. So, in effect, we could be talking about raising the strings a semitone relative to that tension. I normally tune down to D-flat, and if I can get up to a B that would be quite workable for me for the songs I play. So I'll give it a go, incrementally.
