After buying scanners for 47 years I have to say Uniden is really greedy now. I prefer the format of programming and how to use the functions with Uniden. The Whistler scanners don't have upgrades. I see the 996P2 was discontinued which was a disappointment. I purchased a 996P2 new about 4 years ago for $ 345. NXDN extra was $ 60 and DMR $ 50. I got lucky a year ago and found a old guy that could not figure out how to program a 996P2 and sold it basically new for $ 160. Uniden could discontinue all these upgrades and different models that could reduce costs that should lower the street price but oh no, can't have that. It is the same thing with all these different models of hand held amateur radios. To sum it up logic would have these companies make 2 models. 1 model for simple analog and 1 model with all the digital modes. I keep forgetting that common sense and logic went out the door many many years ago. In 1977 when I bought my 1st scanner it was a Regency made in? Indianapolis, Indiana. We at 1 time made everything in the states, all the manufacturing. Now? Nothing, that is #1 reason why there is no future for the USA.

But are scanners still able to hear police and emergency calls. Since encryption was unforced.
@trainaficionadoАй бұрын
The decision to use encryption in public safety communications rests with each individual agency, as there is no mandated requirement for them to implement it. If you seek to monitor your local public safety communications, consider visiting RadioReference.com or reaching out to an online scanner retailer for further details. Should a department choose to use encryption, monitoring their communications would not be possible.

I live near a freight line. We get a few trains a day and they seem random. it's a rural area so there are no lights or crossings near me. How can I tell when a train is coming?
@trainaficionado2 ай бұрын
This can be challenging, but daily training normally will show up around the same times each day, within reason, give or take an hour or two.

WATER. buy a back pack with a pouch for a water bladder. carries far more than three or four bottles. easer to carry as the weight fits both shoulders all the time, so no lopsided pack. and have a gallon jug in your car, truck, ,etc. do not forget good snacks..NO candy bars. a change of socks. ( wet feet suok). research something called( IFAK) should not need a combat kit. but having a simple med kid is good. couple cameras and lots of batteries and memory chips. build up a scanner in your truck with a far better than a walky antenna. and every body in your crew has a gmrs radio. baofeng MP 31. with a better antenna. this is a cheap low cost easy way and works were cellphones can not. and is instant coms. get a paper tablet and pen that is write on in the rain. got flashlights? both head and hand held. emg rain cover. both you and your pack. hand/feet warmers. get a good floppy hat with a neck cover. better than avg anti burn glop to help keep you from burning. ( sun burns just sook).

Hello Mr. Higgins, I sure enjoyed last night's discussion on the Railfan Backpack. I was the one who brought up the First Aid Kit and I also could have added more, but my typing skills are slow and somewhat unintelligible. I don't want to sound as if I'm putting myself down, but sometimes I have a hard time with thinking and writing at the same time. Well, I sure hope revisit this discussion again, because there many out railfanning tool that can make the hobby more enjoyable.

Recently got a Uniden SDS200 and noticed my county (and two surrounding) show a number of train frequencies. I was wondering what the easiest way to determine WHICH ones actually traverse my area. I am in Santa Rosa county FL (with Okaloosa and Escambia on the two sides). Where could I find what lines go by OR which of the entries in the 200 database should I select for this area? I am using the 200 as a base station, not mobile.

The TrainTenna from DPD Productions is a great antenna you didn't mention. I currently own it and it works great. I hear train transmissions from all over the State of Oklahoma and beyond depending on the weather. I also own the Smiley 5/8 Antenna which I use when my Bearcat BC125AT in my home. It does a great job for portable work.

Johnathon, I thoroughly enjoy both of your channels. I do have a question about programming a BCDx36HP upgraded to NXDN for AAR channels 307 to 488. When the channels are imported into a Favorites List the Modulation is set to “Auto” and Audio Option is set to “Digital Code Search”. Are there better settings? Should Modulation be tweaked to “NFM”? Is there a better setting for Audio Option, such as “NXDN Area 1 or Area 0” or “NXDN RAN 0 or RAN?”. Thanks again for your channels a KZbin Premium subscriber and I subscribe to both. Have a great weekend.😅

Thank you for the great info, Jonathan. You mentioned that it takes 33:38 the 160/260 a few minutes (assume you meant a few seconds) to switch from analog to NXDN. Does that mean that the radio cannot 34:03 scan analog and NXDN channels together very well? We have a local large medical service that uses NXDN, but at time I may want you to scan some analog fire channels as well. Would that work well? Thanks again!
@trainaficionado5 ай бұрын
Yes, I meant seconds, and yes it will scan both analog and digital together with no problem.

One note about the programming software of the BCD160DN that is different and may be in error when compared with commercial NXDN radio usage: when setting up NXDN channels in Icom and Kenwood commercial radio software, RAN code RAN0 generally means that the radio squelch will open if it receives any RAN code. In the BCD160DN software RAN0 is treated like a discrete RAN code that will only open the squelch if the transmitting radio is sending RAN0.
@rockymountainjazzfan18225 ай бұрын
The Class 1 railroads began acquiring NXDN-capable equipment over a decade ago. There are very few analog-only radios left on the Class 1 railroads and many shortlines. The Class 1 railroads also have upgraded their FCC licensing almost completely to include NXDN channels. So, the "cutover" could literally happen at most any time that the railroads might decide to do it. They haven't because the adoption of PTC has significantly reduced railroad radio voice traffic such that NXDN conversion is not currently considered a priority. It is incorrect, though, to say the cutover to NXDN would "take years"--it could occur in days once the railroads decide to do it--most all of the equipment is already deployed. For the record, I've been around NXDN for a decade and managed an NXDN radio system for several years. To clear up confusion, NXDN is a proprietary digital platform jointly developed by Kenwood and Icom (Icom calls it "IDAS"). Kenwood and Icom have licensed certain companies to use NXDN--Uniden being one.
