I got to world 9 on lost levels, so SMB hard mode is nothing. I also beat worlds A - D in lost levels.

I though it was called Kuribo's Shoe. Thats what its called in the Nintendo Power Guide book I think. I got the game for Christmas on its original release in 1988 as a kid. Best Mario game ever hands down.

This is the trick you use to become the small Mario that can still throw fireballs. The first time I did this (I was too young to know what a glitch was) I started to freak out because I thought I broke the Nintendo system. 🤗😁😁😁🤭🤭🤭

The name is mentioned in the game's credits, if I remember it correctly. It's also mentioned in one letter. I think the Hammer Suit was a kind of secret/surprise, too.

Even back then Nintendo was kind of big in one-off gimmicks in some of their games, just like Super Mario Bros 2 (the US/EU one, yes, I know it's originally not a Mario game) had several things only appearing once or twice in the game. SMB3 put it on a new level, especially in world 5. The tower, a second world map to discover, etc.

If you do this while Super or Fiery Mario/Luigi, it will play the power-down effect while retaining Super size. The following level, your first powerup will be a Super Mushroom that reverts you to small size, and your second powerup will be a Fire Flower as usual... but from that point on you will have fire power while small sized.

It only took 30+ years to learn that the tanoki suit could stomp out enemies when you turn into a statue. I thought all it did was allow you to freeze as a statue to let enemies pass by you. /facepalm
