Back in the days real warriors would train without any protection. If you get hit it hurts, hurts real bad. With protection you get very complacent and in battle lose awareness of the stakes.

Go grab you a couple stick jocks from your local amtgard chapter if you’d like to see super high speed foam combat.
@burningsunhema

Definitely would be down for the local amtgard group to come by. A couple have come out and tried it. Foam is an easy low equipment entry to sparring. The difficult part is keeping an edge alignment mentality, so we usually try to get students into synthetics and steel as soon as they get gear.
@Ranzoir

@@burningsunhema there is single edged weapons in amtgard , called flat blades. Amtgard is less style and more high speed tag. But you’d be very surprised at the level some of these guys fight at. It’s very very impressive. I know longer go out anymore longer amtgard truly was a younger man’s game the fighting aspect anyways. But I do enjoy watching your videos it reminds me a lot of a great time in my life , with the foam fighting. I spent 95-01 having a blast !

Hello friend! Are you in abq? I recently purchased a set of equipment (that includes reddit's most hated hema helm) and synthetic swords. I'm looking to enter a tournament sometime next year but I have an issue, no sparring partners and the hema club at Duke city fencing only meets on days I work 😢

A great birthday celebration! What is being used as a dagger against the dussack?
@burningsunhema
@burningsunhema Жыл бұрын
It was a ton of fun. The "dagger" is a sparring knife from Tak Knives. It's the Air Wolf from the "Compressor" collection. We really like sparring with these knives. They're solid in the hand and blade for contact, yet the material has just enough give and softness to be used against bare skin. The tips also have compression points so the only protection you need is for the face and throat. takknife.com/products/compressor-air-wolfe

Hi guys. Good fights! I'm researching gear, and I've noticed you're both wearing commercial knee/shin guards, but with additional side protection at the knee. Did you add this protection yourself, or is it an additional product? As far as other gear, I see masks, jacket, elbow cups, skirt, and what appear to be two pair of SPES Heavy gauntlets. Probably also groin protection. Am I missing anything else? Do you have any recommendations to share? (I've done SCA and Belegarth for decades, but am just starting with HEMA). How do you feel about additional (rigid) upper arm / shoulder protection, or upper leg protection? Any opinion about mask covers / back of head protection? Thanks!
@burningsunhema
@burningsunhema Жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, The side of the knee protection is added. It's a stiff, but light plastic material that does a great job of protecting the sides of the joint and tendons. It was made by Tony Huang. We're both also wearing gorgets made by Destroyer Modz. Nate is wearing Destroyer Modz forearm protectors. If you feel you need the upper protection, you can always add it in or get something like the Spes Pro jacket which has them built in. Personally I find those that wear less "armor" the more likely they are to protect themselves rather than go into "tank mode". Also with a jacket appropriate to your weapon and a respectful partner in control of themselves and their weapon, the likelihood of injury is very low. Its usually when people lose control of themselves or their weapons that injuries happen. We try to Train the former and weed out the latter. For back of the head protection, a Spes back of the head protector is more than sufficient. I couple that with an internal padding system designed for football helmets. It takes the sting out of head shots. I was also once hit hard in the back of the head after hold was called, which made my legs wobbly, but no lasting damage or concussion with the internal padding. I highly recommend it: Unequal Mojo Lacrosse Helmet Liner, Lightweight, Flexible, Supplemental Padding Drops into Lacrosse Helmets, Made with a Military-Grade Patented Composite, Coated Aramid Fabric a.co/d/4qtDBxM

At least Brittany is smaller than a lot of the other judges and you can see past her more easily ;) Great covered thrust at 1:25 but wowwow that tindal mask failure on the strike after... did your face cut happen to be harder than some of the previous? Surprised me seeing that... I had heard good things about the original tindal masks but that the quality went down some after horsebows took over the manufacture. I know this was months ago, but just popped up in my feed. Looked like fun ;)

The sabers supplied by socal were too blade-heavy, leading fighters to not be able to control their strikes safely.
