Leafs are nuts if they think having more than half their payroll for a 23 player roster tied up in 5 players is a recipe for success. Despite no playoff progress, they keep hanging on to all these guys, and paying them even more money. Marner annually forgets that the season goes beyond the regular season if team makes the playoffs, so he doesn't show up. Now they have a real soap opera.. they want to get rid of him, but he has a no move clause, and wants to stay. Typical Leaf off season drama.

Good video. Think you nailed it with the Sabres not playing team defence. No doubt that's why Ruff was brought back into the fold. Would rather see Sabres get an experienced tandem goalie, let Levi develop more in the AHL. They have to replace Middlestadt up front, not an easy feat to find good centers. If Sabres can improve team D without seriously sacrificing the offence, they can maybe make the playoffs. Have to get it done somehow, fans have had enough at this point.

Oh I think you nailed just about everything on those bench minors, in the lower leagues there's a bench coach to manage the shifts? They count heads on the ice. and the penalties. 🙄 For me, this was "an anything can happen" season. We got further during regular season than we should have and I suspected that would continue during playoffs. I was hoping we might have some breakout AHL kid that suddenly got his NHL legs about playoff time Didn't happen And I still think we should have played Ullmark at some point. Because he helps us score. I think something's wrong with him? Or maybe he's not a locker room guy so much But - against most Bruins fans' opinions, they may have played sway to get his value up because he may be on the trading block... I've heard his agent is very aggressive and Bruins aren't going to pay. I dunno wouldn't surprise me if Sway was traded. They just tripled his value by giving him that playoff experience. His value sure could fix a team in a good trade 🤷 But playoffs wasnt a surprise, it was hopeful - the magic of the Centennial year... We got our playoff standings with 15 OTL. If by some miracle the Bruins managed to get the Stanley cup, I was looking around for the record to see if any team has managed to win a Stanley Cup with 15 overtime loser points ! That ain't right! Go Rangers! Might be nice if they stopped scoring on their own goalie 🙄 And I think it's time for Rempe Dallas was at the top of my bracket for Western conference Who do you have in the West? And East? We all knew that putting Bruins at the top of our brackets wouldn't work, but... had to do it 🐻 Rangers have been my backup team over the past few decades... Now it's time for Bears to hibernate for the summer - enjoy yours!

Agreed. Given where I (personally) was on the Bruins entering this past season, the playoff run was playing with house money. It was very fun to watch! I do like Ullmark, the offense seems to play better in front of him but the defense seems to be more of a liability when he is out there. I don't think his post season stats tell the story either. He was pretty obviously hurt last year in the playoffs and the second appearance he had this year was in a game where the Bruins gave up defensively in front of Swayman and that continued when Ullmark was on the ice. I think, if given a legitimate chance, he can be an excellent playoff goaltender. We shall see with the Swayman/Ullmark situation this offseason. Swayman will probably be more expensive but also commanded a starting role in the playoffs. I'll probably have to do a video on this sometime this offseason. Super interesting. Yeah I don't care for the OTL's counting as an extra point. I've had a video idea planned to talk about this for a while so I'll have to do that this summer! I have the Rangers and Stars winning their conferences...but honestly, I don't really care. I don't love any of the remaining four teams for various reasons. Plus, any of the remaining 4 could win the cup so it's a crapshoot at this point. Thanks! Enjoy your summer as well!

The problem is the way it is now doesn't create rivalries. Like you said, the game is a lot softer than it used to be. And there's very little hatred amongst fans and players. And the bigger problem is that it isn't the most fair way to determine a champion. Which is why no other league wastes their time with this failed experiment. Unfortunately, unless a lot of players and GM's complain about it, nothing will ever change.

During playoffs, goalies are not just assess based on their save percent average but also on their assists, goalie coaches keep track of how many times they are one pass away from earning assists. That's the biggest difference between Linus and Jeremy. Linus has 3 career assists, 2 with Boston -helps the transitions, gets that puck up ice faster, strong enough to get it way the hell up ice to create breakaway opportunities that Jake debrusk and Brad Marchand blow!; That's a statistic most fans don't realize - I believe tuuka had 17-19 career assists. Two of them within 2 weeks his last healthy season - the season Charlie Coyle came over and got us into playoffs That's a statistic that needs to be explained - especially the ones that don't show up but goalie coaches keep track of how many times their goalies are one pass away from gaining an assist under their statistics. They watch how they use the boards and how many hi danger shot opportunities they create. We don't see those statistics easily. They count So we have to go past the save percentages to pick out our elite playoff goalies

@@thegulch1780 I guarantee I played higher level hockey than you. You’re talking about goalie assists that happen less than 5 times per year vs the amount of goals a goalie lets per game. Like I said, statistically insignificant in comparison.
@thegulch1780
@thegulch1780 5 ай бұрын
@@GrahamWinship the goalie assists indicate they tend to help their forward lines and the majority doesn't make statistics. They are often the fourth pass up ice away from the goal. If you knew anything about statistics, those are indicators, Those goalies that have those "minor statistics"as you call them, are superior in helping the forward lines over those who don't. Those of us who watch the game from the net vision, keep track of those long passes going up ice and breakaway chances that players like Jake debrusk and Brad Marchand have blown at least a half dozen times this past season, with Ullmark handing them high danger chances on a silver platter - that's what I watch. Goalies Being 4 hours behind time zones, I often watch games on demand. So I can stop them, slow them down and watch the goalie action. Because that's my thing. Rask controlled his rebounds to the point where they were passes to Chara - and you don't need to look at his statistics to see it, if you're actually watching the goalie I don't think you can guarantee anything - you're sitting here arguing over the fact that some goalies help their offense more than others? It's like assessing forwards measuring how many shots on goals they get vs how many posts they're hitting. Those are still high dangerous shots even though they don't count as shots because they hit posts. And I don't think we're going to call those high danger shots statistics insignificant Can you understand? you're not explaining the game - not talking technical aspects,don't know how to read between the statistics. you must be so much fun on your own team. Someone gets an assist, other people congratulate them and you just sit there? Because that statistic is insignificant. Yeah, we're done here. Oh here's your bracket - I've been listening to while working... Cool I put this comment under another video by accident, I put you on a playlist and go from video to video while I'm working so I get confused. Later on & coffee breaks I take a look at what you're doing and watch again! That's a logical bracket. That could definitely happen. I'm going to say Cane's sweep islanders. That's going to be my sweep of the Eastern conference. Patrick Roy can only go so far this season.. I'm calling for a Dallas - Boston Stanley Cup final But here's where I'm really going out on a limb first round - I believe ⚡ lightning will take down panthers. They are a seasoned veteran playoff team, they know how to draw penalties, and Andrei vasilevskiy will indeed stand on his head to get there Bolts know how to use the lack of salary cap during playoffs and they've got shot blocker soldiers lined up. The veteran leadership on that team can take any prospect further than they should go... Plug & play I'm taking Bolts over Panthers first round. I have totally agreed that the Panthers physical style was going to limit them, that's what held them back in the Stanley Cup final They have not changed that style play, they're a year older - video coaches on every other team have figured them out. I don't see Panthers Coach Maurice as a rocket scientist. With all due respect, maybe I'm wrong,but he can be out- coached. I'm going with Andrei over Bob... Of all the soft teams in the league, I think Bruins are going to take Leafs in six games or less, and they're going to get to the second round less injured and beaten up then other teams in the Eastern conference So if that happens I think Bruins have a potential for going all the way -hopefully not getting beaten up first round like many other teams will. I reserve my right to be wrong on anything and everything! I just want a fun ride! 🐻🏆

I won't ask what you make off of that 🤫 I'm calling for a Dallas- Boston Stanley Cup final. The west coast is logic, it'll come down to Dallas Oilers conference finals the Eastern prediction is logic based on magic ✨ - the Bruins aren't necessarily a team that are looking to win - They're not going to lose. That's a whole nother set up. I saw that in 2019 with St Louis - I think it was game 5 - something hit me that St Louis was going to take that series simply because they were not losing... No way. I'm feeling that in the Bruins team this season. It's not about winning, they ain't going to lose! For some reason, I have a fondness for St Louis also. They blew their rebuild chance after 2019 on stupid expensive contracts - including torey Krug. I believe Vegas has finally broken Mark stone. That's ridiculous. I don't think Colorado has the depth anymore. They can be figured out. Unfortunately, I think the Canadian teams are going to fizzle out. Good stuff! Thanks! Have you done your NHL bracket challenge? I'm hesitant to say the Wild have a "direction". Guerin would have to do a 180 on contract extensions he put into place last offseason, which seems incredibly unlikely. Since those guys are safe, it likely means that a guy like Rossi is on his way out in order to improve the team to make them more competitive, a season too early. Pretty pleased with the Stars overall; despite looking like they were coasting for most of the season (a la last year's Tampa squad), they ended up at the top of the West.

I put my comment about Washington caps under your other video.... I didn't watch this one yet Yeah this playoff format is getting stale. I don't know what the answer is. It seems like the league is changing, turning over players faster - I don't know if franchises are using their low position in the standings as it was intended to get their teams better in the long run. I don't think this league is done morphing into what Gary Bettman wants. I like the original six matchups also. Toronto may not be an official rivalry, but boy it's really fun beating them in their house. Brad Marchand loves silencing that crowd and I have to admit..... I like it when he does it. There's an extra little self indulgent satisfaction with that. The last time we were there they cleared out about 1/3 of their seats halfway through 3rd period And that seems to be more satisfying in some ways Montreal is not going away. When they get themselves a real coach, they'll be dangerous in 2026. If they don't break all their prospects. Eventually Toronto will get their Cup and the city will explode. Thanks for taking the time after work. Go have some popcorn and root beer... By the time you get this, we already know who's in the playoffs The Islanders just added insult to injury on the penguin season and beat them 5 to 4 the bolts just beat leafs I don't think anything changes in either conference Everybody's got their first round dance partner Good stuff - thanks again

Part of the problem are the Bergvin contracts, in 5-6 seasons? 3 different head coaches I don't know about assistant coaches 3 different goalie coaches, 2 GMS... They've had me scratching my head for a few years... Waiting for the dust to settle but they got enough in their trade cupboard to get some decent roster players in this summer -that should be of interest to the Eastern conference A lot of those players come out of the New England University system- that's where I pick up on them. And an awful lot of them are heading toward Montreal these days 🤔 Whether they stay there or not? I dunno During off-season, I'm watching for Montreal to trade some of their hot shot prospects 1-2 round draft picks, to bring in some roster players - if they bring in the right ones? Cayden Primeau grows to be the goalie I think he can be? We may see them in the playoffs Wild Card next season. Primeau has shown some signs of poise, brilliance. Three shutouts in 23 games. Almost half of his 23 games had a .95 SV% or better. With a decent defense, I'm looking at him to start helping Montreal cut through some of their learning curve. He's been waiting for Allen to be traded 2 years, been gnawing at the bit to get on NHL ice They may be my dark horse playoff team as the Washington caps were this season So if you ever want to get into watching summer trades with montreal- I happen to have followed them very closely the last couple of seasons during their rebuild. Caden primo has not been kept off the ice because he's not good enough - they've had a difficult contract with Allen. I think he's a player to watch next season And will make a difference With all due respect to msl, I wonder if they need another coach with more playoff experience? @@thegulch1780 Absolutely! I just might sometime this summer! I appreciate your optimism with Montreal and they could definitely surprise some people. I have a feeling they will still be bad this year and begin to build up after next season but with all the players vouching for roster spots, we could see a trade or two happen! The Bruins/Habs rivalry is always better when both teams are good so as much as I'm enjoying Montreal finishing last in the Atlantic, I want them to be better before the Bruins get worse (whenever that happens...2 years...15 years down the line). Honestly, it's an exciting team to watch and follow. I think they will stick with St. Louis and see how he continues to develop this team. He could struggle to get the team to the playoffs a few years down the line, when, on paper, they should be a playoff team. Or he could just crumble in the playoffs for a few years. I have a question for you to chew on some time. I'm starting to think that the Capitals have gained a subtle yet deadly advantage using one of the few starting right trapper goalies in Thompson. I think they have confused some teams, including the bruins. Left-handed shooters can easily be confounded, especially on breakaways and shootouts Taking on these teams in single games over the regular season, it likely takes opponents a minute or two to figure it out when they play the Caps But I think a coach and team will figure it out over the course of a seven-game series. But they're forcing other teams and players to play on their weak side. Go against their instincts. They have to pause & think with a right trapper goalie I called Caps as my dark horse team to make it to playoffs. I'm going to brag about it now.( Cuz I don't have much to brag about) But I was all over the Internet after the last Calder Cup when Spencer carberry went back to the Washington franchise. I said if he gets to playoffs, he's definitely a nominee for the Jack Adams award. He's going to be dangerous beyond his right trapper goalie though - cuz he was the Hershey Bears coach and he knows those prospects. He knows how to plug and play role players, and he knows them well. I just told another internet friend that Spencer carbery is the polite quieter version of John tortorella. Don't count him out until that last goal horn. And I do believe that if Max Pacciority thought he wasn't going to be able to play at a decent level? He wouldn't have gone through all of that to rehab. He's a playoff player. Eastern conference should be a little bit scared. Not quite cringing, at least not yet. And he's so popular that when I say his name in my microphone "Max Pacciority," it actually spells it correctly! I can't get my microphone to spell Sidney Crosby correctly.. oh of course it decides to now! Logan Thompson or Charlie Lingren? (I think they are both lefties though). My understanding was that players are usually told where the weaker spots of a goaltender are and where to aim (Braden Holtby with his glove hand a while back for example). I'm a right-shot and love shooting across my body to the top left corner (which I think most players are and do) but that means the player is shooting into the glove of a lefty goaltender. The glove is typically tougher to get by than the blocker...so it could? I think at the NHL level, players are capable of shooting pinpointing any shot so I'm not sure the trapper side has all that much impact. Interesting though! It's actually insane to see how awful the Capitals play was to start the season and the evolution. I don't think Carberry will win the Jack Adams (or even be a finalist because NHL politics) but he has, without a doubt, been an outstanding coach. I'd have him in my top 3. The Capitals had no defense or scoring to start the season but over time, Carberry created this team-defense atmosphere and they are now transitioning that defense to offense. I've been absolutely shocked with the transformation. Looking at the team on paper, it makes you wonder how this evolution was even possible. Much respect. I think Pacciority could be solid in the playoffs but one has to wonder if the injuries and age are catching up to him. He also looks slightly out of place in Spencer Carberry's system but is actually playing decent defense.

Well that was an interesting perspective on goalies. Fleury would be good for the Wild stable, keep them competitive and he's a pretty good role model. But I don't like three goalie systems! I don't even like the Bruins tandem system. A goalie needs to own the net. I don't know enough about the wild to tell them what to do about goalies. Marc Andre Fleury is sort of a guest in their house for now... I guess I don't know whether he's going to help their goalie system, I don't see him hurting it other than having rusty goalies I'm glad he's still playing- hope he circles back to the Penguins before he hangs them up I have nothing to contribute. I just learned a bunch of stuff!

I also dislike the three-goalie system but...admittedly, I actually like the goalie tandem. It's just tough to sustain that tandem because both goaltenders will eat up a good chunk of cap space whereas a cheap, competent backup goaltender can save you an extra few million. It'd be fun to see Fleury back in a Pens uniform to finish out his career. Especially if they play Montreal at the end of the season.

Hockey fans didn't care about hockey arenas - we brought our own coffee or thermoses. I remember a game where two men stood on the corner boards because it was loose. They put hockey helmets on and stood there the entire game to keep those boards up! Of course it doesn't need to be that dilapidated and unsafe - but moderating ticket prices might help in some of these new markets. It's all corporate sponsorships -a few fans actually make it to Stanley Cup finals, like the super bowl. Nice shirt! I only have Krejci & a Hextall t-shirt. I'll shuddup now 😁

Not everyone is as diehard as you and I 😂. Absolutely with the ticket prices but I believe that is essentially up to ownership? (There may be stipulations on minimum ticket prices but I'm not 100%). The Sabres for example, tickets are expensive in a market where they struggle to sell tickets! Corporate dollars are a massive source of income for a team. If an owner is shady with business practices, less corporations may be willing to do business or renew their sponsorships. The one Bruins player I always wanted a jersey for is David Krejci. Absolute legend...and Andrew Raycroft but that's a story for another time.

NHL is clearly about bucks not pucks. Bobby Orr could tell us all about it. The parts per million of gluttons involved, increases with revenues. "Growing hockey" is not offering a runway for opportunity, But paving the road for opportunists. The last 20 years, I have often said North America has gone from the land of opportunity, to the land for opportunists. I don't agree with the Fenway Group taking over local teams. Mark Cuban selling the Mavericks to a gambling corporation. We had this thing called the Sherman antitrust laws... Put in place over 100 years ago. Oh well. Interesting stuff - thank you for the update

No question the NHL is all about the money. The pressure from the league and Player's Union was mostly because of the profitability of the franchise (or lack there of). I don't think you're alone with the corporate ownership groups. Sports franchises are often viewed as investment assets that'll quickly appreciate and never lose value rather than viewing the franchise as players/staff with families, fans, facilities. I'll have to read up on the Sherman Antitrust laws! Thanks! Thank you! Always appreciate your comments!

Good stuff. I listened a few days ago while working, came back to listen more carefully It was kind of easy to guess 6 out of the bottom 8 and 6 of the top 8 teams, but whatever's in the middle is always a question. I expect Tortorella to make trouble every playoffs. I like watching the third periods of Philadelphia games to see what tricks he pulls out of his sleeve, after studying his opponents 40 minutes. He teaches us a lot about goalie skills coaching believe it or not! I'm wondering if his loud message has hit diminished marginal returns at this point? 📢 Not sure if the Predators are for real-they have faked me out for a few years lol! Edmonton took a while to get their engine going, but it's going. Thinking Oilers will show up ready to not lose, they're the team with the biggest chip on their collective shoulder in the West. I don't know their playoff depth. They may go further than their talent and depth should. Similar to Bruins, but I think the B's painful cut runs deeper. been watching Spencer carbery since he went back to Caps. Max pacioretty wouldn't have come bac if he wasn't going to be effective. If they make it to playoffs, I think he'll be helpful. They were my dark horse team getting to playoffs. players like Alex Ovechkin don't die, they just smell that way! Seems like that might be bringing a bit out of his arch rival, Sidney Crosby making a showing. The addition of Bunting, has brought a spark to the Penguins. Perhaps Jake leaving forced other players to step up - like Bergeron and Krejci Speaking of Boston, I'm seeing some Krejci- like moves coming out of Heinan, that backwards pass to the goal the other game.. he's 'bending' pucks like Krejci did. Thrilled he's come back to boston.. and that's an interesting connection 3 ° of separation- when he was first signed with bruins, he was playing at University of Denver He continued to play for University at Denver while under Bruins contract, where Jim Montgomery came in as a new coach That's the full circle connection between Boston bruins, Jim Montgomery connected by Danton Heinen back in Denver 😃 I assumed since he was handpicked by Jim Montgomery and welcomed back to Boston that they knew something we didn't. I didn't know he was going to be this awesome. And it looks like he wasn't expecting it either! Very happy for him. The unpredictability of this league was predictable! Thanks! 👍

Why would Toronto be on this list? Have you seen the division? It really doesnt matter where they end up. No questions in net Sammy has been the 2nd best goalie since Jan. Presidents trophy is not worth anything. Leafs have not anything to play for in 2 months. They are only waiting on the playoffs to begin. That is were the battle begins.

Wait for playoffs for the battle to begin? So Toronto is suddenly going to turn it on, first round when they're forced to take on the Panthers? I dunno about that one? 🤔

@@thegulch1780 maybe look at the leafs record recently. They are playing strong hockey. This thing with the playoffs is tired. They are in the toughest division. Any team will have a hard time coming out of the Atlantic.

@@Ovres I hear you. It is getting tired, yet I think Toronto has been lined up to take on one of the toughest teams in the East. Panthers know what they're doing this season, whereas last year they didn't! Toronto has been accused of being "soft" this season. So I'm addressing their ability to battle, that battle needed to start earlier. I might know something about going up against Panthers first round. Clobbering goalies on the head when they're sprawled out on the ice, Then using a referee as a human shield to punch your goalie in the head again! Lot of wasted energy that first round taking on the chokeholds, cross checking. And coaches telling players to "back down," didn't work. Going soft did not work against Panthers. There's a reason Matthew Tkachuck ended up with a broken sternum by Stanley Cup finals So my point was, they might want to think about battling earlier, enough to get out of that position where they have to take on Florida Panthers first round I might know a thing or two about that Lol! 🐻 Enjoy the ride! ✌️

@@Ovres yes, That's one game - we'll see what they do when they visit Florida next week... This conversation is to be continued. my point is, battling earlier this season would have put them in a better playoff seed. We were talking about when to start battling. Landing first round against Panthers or hurricanes is probably not a good idea.

Detroit being in the wild card race is exactly where they should be this season. Now if they don’t make it that’s a little disappointing, but if they make it alls forgotten

Oh Ben's been around, some of us appreciate the smaller intelligent podcasts over the clickbait we don't have to put up with gambling ads... Somebody screaming at us to sub every 2 minutes 🙄 just wants to share hockey, very good at assessing on his own, doesn't crunch numbers the same as others. He can read between the statistics Fair assessments,Not clickbait. The original podcast I saw used whiteboards 20-something years ago It just means the hockey guy isn't putting his proceeds back into his set. Ben's a small hockey community If we ask good questions, we usually get answers. And I can listen to an intelligent conversation for a while while I work. Without a bunch of ads

@@abe1996 I like the hockey guy - he's often trying to sell NHL jerseys. I believe I get ads in the middle of his videos. But I don't do the premium stuff. So that could be my problem The hockey guy does tons of trade rumors that we know won't happen... That gets old quick. So maybe it's not quite clickbait but it's constant "rumors." But that's okay. I can come over here to Ben when I don't want to hear the trade rumors stuff. I don't see Ben as trying to be like anyone but himself. He has his own opinion. he's played hockey And he is south of the border. Minnesota? I believe the hockey guy is north of the border So there is a difference - I could do without all those trade "rumors" But we get to know different players messing around in the trade rumor mill. Respect to both guys. I'm allowed to prefer one over the other.
