I’ve loved this song for so many years. Frankie is a reference to Frankie Teardrop, the song by Suicide, who heavily influenced Springsteen on this album. Now working in psychiatry, I think about this song as a great illustration of the cycle of trauma, whether that’s due to class, war, occupation…also racism, etc. its a very real portrayal of this. I hear a similar story most days in my work. it’s a beautiful song.
