Thank you so much again for these great videos of the 20th century performances of classical music, sorry to ask but if you have a recording of Franck's symphony in d minor on set a set of 78s, can you please make a video of that piece please? Thank you so much.

Stravinsky conducted Petrouchka much more often than Le Sacre, both for ballet performances and concerts. It is much less hazardous. The players may have gotten to know it playing for the Ballets Ruses.

Wonderful! I wonder if we’re hearing the illustrious “Huberman Stradivarius” now used by Joshua Bell?
@martinadler739 ай бұрын
Quite possible, as it was his main instrument until 1936 when he switched for a short period to his newly acquired Guarneri, leaving the Strad unattented, leading to it being taken by a thief, just like in 1919, but now it was gone for many years, unlike 1919 when it was back after a short time.
@osvaldoschilling91299 ай бұрын
No wonder Huberman was a living legend of a musician. Those artists had to rely on their own personal background and understanding of each piece they played since there were no recordings or other ways of finding examples to reproduce. The first movement is different from anything I have ever listened for its wide use of staccato( 14.18) and other parts which, again, look uniquely beautiful(10.40) by reproducing birds sounds.

Thanks for this - one of my favourites (I use the opening solo in non-piano focused lectures sometimes to show his incredible portamenti). I've never seen Steinberg with the first name Maximilian!

@@martinadler73 it's definitely my favourite reading. I played this in a university presentation a few years ago and the violinists adored some parts and were intensely shocked by others; my main point was that for all the expressed intent to 'do justice to the composer's intention', they sure tend to be dismissive of things that were done in the composers' lifetimes. Wonderful to hear this again with your fresh transfer - thanks again!
@martinadler739 ай бұрын
@ThePianoFiles I agree - it is always worth listening to recordings made by artists that were near to the composer's times. Many things get lost over the decades. Thanks again.

Martin, I had read somewhere that Rachmaninoff had been miffed that he’d been made to play an upright at one of his earliest recording sessions. Is this true? Amazing audio restoration here, German brother. 🙏🏻
@martinadler7310 ай бұрын
Thanks, Nosh! There is a Wikipedia article "Sergei Rachmaninoff recordings" stating that he had to use an obscure brand of grand piano at his earliest sessions with the Edison company. I could not find anything about an upright, though.

@@martinadler73 Martin, have you ever heard of quadraphonic recordings? What is your opinion of the sound quality thereof, and can such an effect be achieved with remixed older recordings? 😲
@martinadler7310 ай бұрын
@@noshirm6285 Dear Nosh, yes I have heard about it. It is recording with four separate channels to get an additional spatial dimension (stereo - two channels -> left/right; quadro - four channels -> left/right/front/rear). Unfortunately there is only one channel in old recordings (mono - one channel -> no spatial information). So my "spatial enhancement" is only a "fake stereo" which just helps to separate the sound from the hiss a bit. It is more a psychoacoustic effect. As it affects the sound slightly (on the right channel, the left channel is the pure unchanged mono signal), a further manipulation to get something pseudo quadrophonic would be too much, I guess. Furthermore, we do not have quadrophonic playback possibilities any more in every home. The modern equivalent are e.g. Dolby Digital technologies.

@@martinadler73 Danke, Martino, for this detailed response. 🙏🏻 It certainly sounds complicated to a layman like me. 😳
