doesn't work any more. apk cannot be used, only aab. also "expansion file" aka obb, cannot be used any more, Play Asset Delivery is available instead, but that's completely another story than obb, with different limits and usage.

Open testing is visible to the general public on Google Play, but with a "Pre-release" warning. People can review the app, but the reviews are only visible to you. Before choosing this option, make sure your app and store listing is ready to be visible on Google Play. However, Production is visible to the general public. User reviews are public.

Keep in mind that while your app is in open testing, it will not receive public ratings or reviews. Yes, ads can be tested in open testing on the Google Play Store.

You can indeed use an emulator for testing but you need to Complete device verifications of a real physical Android device before you can make your app available on Google Play.

Certain features in Play Console, such as Production (Release > Production) and Pre-registration (Release > Testing > Pre-registration), will be disabled until developers meet these requirements. It is sure that Closed testing is mandatory for publishing an app for the first time. But nowhere Google mentions this for an 'App Update', which by the way also points to the statement ( By Google) 'You must run a closed test before you can apply to publish your app to production'. Easiest way to confirm is to check that above link is disabled for an app update also.

Google won't count testers who opted in, tested for less than 14 days, and then opted out. Even if they opt back in so that they are opted in for a total of 14 days, these 14 days must be consecutive to count towards the criteria of 20 opted-in testers who have tested for 14 consecutive days.
