Terrible top 20 list. KC Bourye? Like really? And then bottles like Russell Reserve 15 didn’t make it?
@chillfiltered3 күн бұрын
Seriously, it's like they picked random 2024 releases off a list without any tasting or consideration. That's putting it nicely.

Not sure if this is common across the US but a few stores near me will have two prices for highly allocated bottles. You can buy them at retail but they have to open them at purchase or, if you want to take it home sealed, there is a decently higher cost. I kind of like that concept.
@chillfiltered19 күн бұрын
Oh wow! I had no idea some places were doing things like that. What might the price difference be for like a $150 BTAC?

Castles Curse is from the Teaninich distillery, a highland distillery. It’s one of Diageo’s (orphan barrel’s daddy warbucks) blend focused distilleries. They do not release many/any OBs, only the flora and fauna range release which does not come to the US. Fully matured in European oak, website does not specify what the barrels were previously used for. If the casks are refills then they were pretty active. MSRP is always kind of hard to deter mom for Orphan Barrel unless you’re in the industry because everything gets jacked up immediately. I’ve bought two bottles, first was $135, second was $100. Even for a 14 year, I definitely think it’s worth it at $100, gets a little more dicey at $135 or higher.
@chillfiltered26 күн бұрын
This is great information! Thanks for reaching out. I agree. This is totally worth $100.

Want to clarify the merit of the score. Straight out of the bottle it's got some flaws like having your tongue grass f*cked into oblivion. But, if you dress it up with ice or water which ultimately numbs the profile. Then it's an A-ish. Well.... that's certainly interesting.
@chillfilteredАй бұрын
Thanks for watching. Wouldn't call it that, but curious if you've tried it?
@jmoore6456Ай бұрын
@chillfiltered I generally don't give a strong opinion about a whiskey before trying it. Do you? It is not a an A worthy Rye. That grassy note is way too prominent. Unless your favorite profile is vegan, this was a disappointing release.
@chillfilteredАй бұрын
Definitely agreed. It was disappointing.

Did you guys consider what mash bill it could be? Cole seemed to assume it was the Handy/Sazerac mash bill. I am curious because the eht bib rye is Barton rye not BT. That is why i felt the 1792 full proof might make a nice entry. Anyway, do you think it drank closer to handy (51%ish rye) or the eht rye (95% rye).
@yourdrinkingbuddyАй бұрын
Evidence: Buffalo Trace website says the EHT bib rye is a different mash bill and 95/5. Tour guide says the ONLY make 4 mash bills on site unless it is for expiramental release (the 4 are low rye, higher rye, wheated and rye). The eht bib rye has bartons DSP number on the bottle (KY-12).

I wonder if the extra time of aging in French Oak develops a more balanced palette where more fruitiness comes out with age vs predominant floral character from shorter finishing…
@chillfiltered2 ай бұрын
My thought is that it's all about the charred bit. I can't imagine too many French oak finishing barrels are charred. Could be wrong though.

Thanks for reviewing Rac Rye 2! The components you named are correct. There was straight, toasted (aged, not finished), and Mizunara finished. Those three were blended then put back into Mizunara for additional marrying time. Cheers!

Just finished listening to the podcast, I agree Nick is an awesome guest, he's down to earth and has a wealth of information. Enjoy listening to him and learning more about whiskey history and his brand Found North. I was lucky enough to win a bottle this first lottery and will pop it open as soon as it arrives! I have a double barrel Found North from Bitters & Bottle but haven't opened that yet. Heard you guys mentioning your first Barrel Pick, congratulations can't believe you guys went 6 years without a pick, maybe its perfect timing though, because what better company to work with for your first pick than Found North; please let me know how I can go about picking up a bottle once thats ready. Thanks again for another amazing episode wish you guys much success and also Nick and the team at Found North look forward to trying out Batch 010 once it arrives! Cheers!

Thanks @josesanchez5920! Yeah, Nick is so easy to talk to and it's always a fun time. Congrats on the lottery win! I think you'll like it. We're stoked to pick a barrel, and yeah, we basically had it in mind, our first barrel pick would be with a banger of a whiskey. So we're excited for what's to come. Cheers! - Cole

Yeah, it does feel pretty good knowing Bryan and I both will have a better chance next time. And they were fighting off bots, which is reassuring. I think this should be more common practice too.
