My man, being the best guitarist of all time is NOT about being the best ”shredder” or the one who’s technically the best or the quickest. It’s about musical inventiveness, originality, how well they wrote guitar parts and the level of technical complexity (it’s part of it but not the number one aspect). I mean, there are probably thousands of kids who can shred incredibly fast solos, much faster and more technically gifted than any on these types of lists, but anyone can learn a musical scale and then solo it with practice. Actual musical talent, inventing your own guitar sound, complex chord progressions, playing outside of scales but still making it sound musical, THAT’s what’s special and why Radiohead’s guitarists are on the list, for example.

This reference video for guitar buzz I was searching for for a while now - almost impossible to find such content (every video was just about how to eliminate the buzz but not what is acceptable. I have a Jackson js32t and I am a total beginner, I was really annoyed with the buzz because I practiced without an amp. I thought that my guitar was broken but it doesn't seem to be buzzing more than yours. My guitar may be still broken because there is no configuration in which it won't buzz, how high would you have to set the action and string height in order to eliminate any buzz? Also how light would you have to play with the increased config to not have buzz?
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 4 күн бұрын
Well there are a ton of factors involved. If you want decent action with a somewhat fast neck then there will be some buzzing. You either have to have some buzz or sacrifice speed and action. You cannot get both. But another issue is a lot of people do pick very hard. You can either lighten your touch or go with a lighter pick to lessen the attack on the strings....but the goal is to find that middle ground where everything works within reason. I have a few videos on guitar setup. You might want to watch one to make sure your guitar is set up right. that is the most important thing.

Yeah I still have a ton of picks I have yet to review. I tried those EVH picks that my sub sent me....they are much thinner than I am used to but they are a blast to play with. They have that grip on the top of the pick and I really like those....but for detailed playing I have to go back to my stiffer small picks. I have a Dunlop Petrucci. I can't get a feel for that pick. I got a couple of V picks that are pretty cool and they don't move around too much.

I follow you except for one thing. How does the middle finger having two nerves, one on each side, give it super powers over the ring finger? Fingers have a fairly limited range of very simple motion. Texturally, they have a great deal of control, which is responsible for all that delicious nuance we can apply to the strings. Lets say that it is the two nerves, leaving the ring finger lame. But the ring finger has exactly what the first (index) finger has...why is it not lame? Or, is it, but due to that index finger predominantly being our 'bar' finger and the finger we generally don't hammer with, we just don't notice it?

Love the channel but brother, one key thing and technical thing that will eliminate fret buzz is practicing the right attack/technique. As Kerry King has said many times, the secret to speed is to minimize hand movement. The top shredders out there, if you really pay attention to what they are doing, their attack is both very minimal in movement, precise, and light. That's why their sound is so clean. Fret buzz, especially if your guitar is pleked, is 100% the player's fault and not the guitar...and really should never be acceptable as the solution can be learned. I have the same Ibanez model, minus the trem and it is awesome. After pleking, I got the action down to .05" on the low E, .04" high E, which is also my target. The guitar doesn't buzz at all if my attack is proper. :) Btw, the best guitars I've had for the lowest achievable action is Hagstroms, their H Expander truss rod is just so good.
@TraceTaylor3
@TraceTaylor3 14 күн бұрын
Hmmm. Never played a hagstrom. I will have to check them out. And yes. Technique is a big part of it. I have a video where I talk about the fact that if your guitar is set up properly and you still have fret buzz....then chances are it is you. Believe it or not....I had a Ibanez I used to own plek'd and it was terrible. I had it done at sweetwater and when I got the guitar I had to have the frets leveled. Needless to say they returned my money for the plek. I have never had one done since.

That's not to uncommon. The way it is supposed to work is that from the bridge to the tuner everything should be in an exact straight line.....but that is hardly ever the case. Especially if the headstock tilts back a little and the they tilt the locking nut. when that happens a lot of time if you tune then lock the nut the thicker strings will go sharp. I have a few guitars...some really high end that do that very thing. What I do is adjust my fine tuners all the way out....screw them back in a couple of turns....then tune the guitar a little flat....tighten the locking nut....it will pull most of the stings close to tune and then use the fine tuners to get it in.

Great breakdowns I do strongly disagree with some of your takes like Jimmy page not being a top 5 guitar player. But overall it was a fantastic analysis and man is this list is complete and utter dogshit. There’s just no other way to put it. I mean seriously what were they on when they made this list crack out of their ass? Because apparently Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Alex Lifeson, dimebag Darrell, Eric Johnson, Slash, and so many other people including people that didn’t even make the list aren’t top 50 guitar players of all time some of them weren’t even in the top 200, but apparently Neil Young is?

@TraceTaylor3 22 күн бұрын
Yeah this list was shit at best. I wasn't ragging on Page. I like Page. As a song writer he was brilliant but I can think of a lot of guitarist that are more technically proficient then Page is. They did this just to stir people up because they have turned into a political rag and they had to generate something to get people talking. It just shows you that they are more concerned with DEI then they are talent.

@@TraceTaylor3 Yeah I can definitely see your comeing from.From pure technical interviews, Joe Satriani is definitely better in terms of technicality. And he can be a little bit sloppy especially nowadays but to be fair he’s in his 80s now. But in terms of pioneering hard rock there is a very few that even come close. And I just don’t understand the criteria for the splits that doesn’t even seem like the people he’s made this list even looked at the criteria that they even made. Because they said that they’re not basing their list on who can shred the best, but then they put a ton of shredders on their list anyway? And David Gilmour by their own criteria should be in the top 5, but he was stuck at like 29 or something like that?

@@pleaseenteraname1103 Yeah. It was insane. They put people like H.E.R. in front of some of the greats which is ridiculous. Hell Petrucci did not even make the list. Their reasoning was idiotic at best. And yeah, Satch has gotten a tad sloppy. I guess that comes with age.....but I hope not. But I look at Satriani more of what he gave us than more of what he did. Hell, he taught Vai....and that is really a case of the student becoming the master.....but he taught so many great guitarist....I always based him more on that then his skill set....which is still amazing.

Yamaha Modx+ is the single best keyboard there is. I stupidly sold mine... and have bought a new one. The sample synth engine is very underrated, and NOBODY does FM like Yamaha. It can do anything. I own a Hammond XK-5, Korg Nautilus, and Roland Fantom... And I can't get by without the Modx+.

Yeah I have been really happy with mine. It does everything I need and I have no plans to replace it. When I was younger I always bought the top end of whatever it was....and as I have gotten older I have realized to don't need to spend 5k to get a really great keyboard.

I know right. I hate playing in standard. But if you are doing youtube videos and you are not in standard then you get a ton of hate mail people threatening to eat your children. It's crazy.

@@TraceTaylor3 there's several ways to tune I like standard and drop D. Sometimes I even play in just D tuning. But I don't know all the other tunings have to listen to someone else's guitar to find that type of thing. Doesn't really matter to me I only mess with about three tunings and I really like standard E tuning don't care about what any of these clowns think...

@@patrickshannon4516 Yeah I use a couple of tunings. I don't want to have to carry 10 guitars to a show because of all the tunings everyone uses. I am actually getting ready to do a video on tunings. When you change your tuning kind of makes you rethink things and it will open a lot of doors to ideas.....but it can be a headache trying to remember what guitar is tuned to what.

I don't really know how i got to this random old video, but tonewood is and will always be pure horseshit. You could string up a guitar-shaped rock and slap a seymour duncan in it and it would have the same characteristics as any guitar with that same pickup, guitar wood is purely preferential and cosmetic. With that said, the rest of the video was well made. have a great day!

Well my friend I am going to give you three reasons why tone woods do matter....and work. first....if tone woods did not matter then they would make the guitars our of cheap MDF or resin or something to keep cost down. Second....I had at one point 13 Peavey Wolfgangs. All American. All had the maple tops except my white one. It had no cap at all and it was significantly darker than the other 12 guitars. Third....I believe it was Rhett Shull who put up a video about a month ago where he took the same fender body with 3 different necks with different woods. They all sounded different with the maple neck and maple fret board sounding vastly different. Now with that being said.....if you take any guitar with any hot pickup and crank the distortion....they are going to sound pretty much the same....but as the distortion rolls down....that is where the differences start to show. Years ago a friend and I made our own 4x12 cabs. We both had vintage 30 speakers. He made his out of pine because it was so cheap. I made mine out of mahogany. The difference was crazy. Mine was a little darker but the overall sound was smoother. His was very bright and harsh. I am not sure who started this whole...woods don't matter thing....but they are shockingly wrong. Check out the Rhett video and you can hear for yourself. He also did not believe that woods made a difference. Needless to say he does not think that now. Thanks for the comment brother.

To hear a J custom's guitar smack into your shirt buttons in the beginning made me cringe. I wouldn't treat a 400$ ibanez like that. Esp to try to be funny 👎

Actually that was my wedding ring on my neck of the guitar. And I get what you are saying. I ALWAYS take my ring off when I play but forgot to in this video until I heard that smack. Then if you notice I do not have it on after the title. Also I always play with my shirt unbuttoned live. It kills me to have those button scratching the hell out of the back....but sadly a lot of that is unavoidable.

No comparison! They can try and even come close but what Steve Perry can do to anyone who listens to him can not be duplicated. This commentator is way off.
