Across The Border really is a wonderful piece of work. An overlooked classic, hiding in plain sight. Recoding it in the studio must have been enormous fun.

I believe DDi Codec only supports Dolby B & C and probably this reel was encoded in Dolby A which was the standard at the time in the studios sounds great anyway.Thank you Bill!

Yes, DDI is B and C. I tried both. B sounded better. Some say Dolby B is OK if A isn't available. Since DDi is adjustable to the level of the music, I found the "best sound" by lowering the overall wave about 6dB and adjusting the noise reduction to fit that. Then boosting the decoded audio back to normal - then adding that audio to the video file here. If I can get my hands on a Dolby A decoder, I'll definitely try it out. Note that Dolby B came out in the late '60s and was available. The guy and I discussed the types and since the note only said "Dolby" - and this tape wasn't recorded in the mastering studio, it was simply a safety copy made at a pressing plant, we don't really know if it's A or B.

@@lostplanetradio Fair enough and the video sounds great Bill ,anyway I would like to tell you that the VST plugin "u-he Satin" which is quite expensive but a friend of mine told me is out there for free (You know what I mean ;) ) it encodes and decodes Dolby A,B and C among others...I think you should give it a try since you work with these reels all the time, I think you might find it helpful.Cheers!

@@TheStarclipse Update.. today (10/16/24) taking the tape back to the owner... We were looking for anything else written on the tape or even the leader. Then having the reel in bright daylight shining through the window, there was faint writing in the reel plastic. Looked like very faded marker that is now barely visible. Getting the light and angle just right, we could see "DSOTM copy 7.5 Dolby B on, stereo 6/1974". So the Dolby NR used was B and we're now certain it was copied in June 1974. The writing is on the side being played in the video and isn't visible at all. (Adding info to description.)

Enjoy this (not so) short video about basic record cleaning. The key is DISTILLED WATER. Other details are in the description. Note...The current Discwasher cleaning brushes being sold ARE GARBAGE. The "brush" is basically corduroy cloth. If you can find an OLD ORIGINAL one, grab it. I've had the one shown here for decades. About a year ago, I acquired another one from work, during a cleanup of a storage area. That one needed some TLC, as the thick one-direction "thick velvet" type cloth was coming off after drying out and the adhesive was no longer holding the cloth in place. It was a simple procedure of putting thick "rubbery" double sided tape cut to fit the wooden handle and re-sticking the cloth back on and letting it set. It works perfectly. You might find these originals at garage sales or thrift stores. Forget the old fluid, the brush is the ticket to cleaning the vinyl records.

Hello!...what you say here is interesting, I think the same. I have a lot of respect for Jeff Lynne, he is my musical hero but I think that from Zoom onwards he has made the big mistake of wanting to do everything himself. I don't really like too much anything from Zoom onwards. Lynne is an excellent singer, producer, guitar, bass, keyboards player, but drums are not his thing. I liked Armchair Theater because Jeff allowed other people to play with him. That's the formula, even if you are the creator, it is always good that other people give their contribution to your material. That is why ELO is what it was and is today in the history of rock...a great group with a leader who relies on the talent of his groupmates. Jeff is a personal friend of Steward Copeland, Jim Keltner and many other great drummers who would have given a powerful touch to Jeff's last solo albums. But hey, it's just an opinion.

Hello my friend, thanks for uploading this. I love the sound of Richard Tandys electric Clavichord Clavinet playing and the wonderful sounds of the Yamaha CS-80. Jeff Lynne embraced the Disco sound in 1979 which was at its peak and even added a Philadelphia Soul style strings arrangement with the help from Louis Clark. 🎻🎻🎻❤️🙏😉👍👍👍

Thank you for giving us this HQ version. I always thought it was their weakest album because Kelly Groucutt was missing. ELO was always more than just Jeff Lynne. Yes, he wrote all songs. But the other nembers were truly gifted musicians and added their own "flavor" to each song. Jeffs solo albums sound nearly sterile to me. His songs need other talented musicians to really shine, like when he was with the Traveling Wilburys, for example.
@lostplanetradio
@lostplanetradio 2 ай бұрын
I'll kind of agree - the "bigger" sound with more voices and instruments made ELO something special. Jeff has a gift to create unique and catchy songs. With the people he surrounded himself with, we got that unique sound. "Balance Of Power" I don't see as "the weakest", but the result of Jeff simply tired of the "grind" of being under a contract. Unfortunately, during the late 1970s and early 1980s it seems his personal life and getting tired of the "formula" made him a little "cranky". There was the falling out with Kelly. Jeff and his lawyers chose to simply do a "pay off" and cut ties. By this album, Bev was stripped back to playing a drum machine - or Jeff programmed it himself. (Although listen carefully, Bev has some real drums on this album.) This album was full of short pop tunes that, even though Jeff "was done" with the ELO "concept", still were catchy tunes. He threw in his songs that told everyone listening "this is it...I'm done.." To this day, I still think "Destination Unknown" should have been the final song. Maybe he thought it was too blatant of a message, but it still appeared as a b-side. "Send It" gave a similar message of how he felt - without saying "destination unknown". We can only wonder how this album would have sounded if he could have gathered some real strings and did one more "big sounding" album. I imagine it would have sounded more like "Discovery", but with more of a rock and pop vibe, than disco. His biggest "flaw" is he loves to work when he wants to - and do everything himself, to his own satisfaction. He really dislikes schedules and being forced to work with people who are not ready to do stuff when he feels like it. You mention the Wilburys...that was the perfect environment. They recorded as friends, on their own timetable. Jeff could fiddle with production until he liked it. It was done when they all decided it was done. "Armchair Theatre" was the same thing. It was all him - with the guests - that he could record over and over until he said it was done. Sadly, now that Richard is gone - and his "staples" since "BOP" - Harrison, Petty, Orbison, etc...are gone, he just does everything from his home studio primarily by himself. The songs and music are still good, but he IS missing that depth of others and what they would contribute. We're lucky he's touring (and enjoying it) and has a full band to support his sound. It's too bad he can't get them together in the studio to record with him. They are involved in other projects outside of ELO - but what a treasure it would be if he could get this group together to properly record a studio album.

This album has positives and negatives for me. I miss the 70s ELO musicians input, don't like the 80s sound, but the production is next level. "Calling America" and "Without Someone" are two of my favourite ELO songs, Jeff could still write songs that stuck in my head. He sounds so much like Roy Orbison in a part of "Endless Lies", a clever song, that I love listening to. There isn't a song on this album that I dislike, but I do wish it didn't sound so 80s. I prefer it to Secret Messages, but nowhere near as good as Time. Zoom has some good songs too, but there's a few songs I want to skip on that one. There's only a few songs after that, that I like to listen to.

@@lostplanetradioYes, I feel much the same way. And I think there is something like "too much perfection". When Jeff plays all the instruments, he plays them perfect because he knows how he meant it to be. But it's the little imperfections and different interpretations that turn good songs into great songs. You get this only with other musicians. That's why I do not like Jeff's solo re-recordings from 2012 (published as "Mr. Blue Sky"). They sound lifeless and boring to me.

@@franzfrunzner4086Hello my friend, I totally agree with your comment. When Kelly joined he added a new sound and dimension to the harmonies. The musicians in the 70s adding there thing especially live performances (Mik Kaminski violin solos and Hugh McDowell Cello solos 1978 Tour!!). Richard Tandy's piano work and Wurlitzer electric piano and moog synth those incredible vintage instruments he played adding his trademark styles. Bev Bevans drum sound eg Out of the Blue, great rhythm and timing! I like all ELO stuff but to me that was there peak 1974 to 1981. And last Louis Clark adding the Orchestra and Choir arrangements, and absolute crucial addition to ELO!! 😉👍

W.W.9 is SUCH an under-rated piece. It gives out that proper retro vibe, feels like you're lying in bed on a rainy night, and you're just listening to some soft music to help you get to sleep. Thomas Dolby basically started the 80's synth-pop era, and is SUCH an under-rated producer. I'm definitely playing this as a live link at my upcoming gig!
