Shortest stroke makes the most hp everything else the same. Torque will rise with everything change larger in stroke and hp peak will decrease.

Lots of chevey guys will denie this can be done, i have seen hundreds of them in chat comment section, every time some one asked for advice on building s 302 sbc they try to talk them out if it, and when z28 owners say the cars where increadablly fast they denied it. YOU JUST PROVED THEM ALL WRONG. 😁🤠🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Can you see the moronials having the vision or patience to see this to the finish? No, just give me an LS and a pile of parts bought off the shelf so i can have another cookie cutter look-alike. Unfortunately this is the future of the car culture, thanks to the Chip Foose's and Richard Rawlings's of the hobby, Sad! But thank you people who understand the importance of retaining the history of these iconic pairings of parts across all makes and models of vehicles. Hell most of the moronials wouldn't know how to spell Smokey Yunick, much less know who he is! Even though he forgot more about the workings of an automobile than they will ever know! As I said before Sad!

Ford's 302 was still superior due to it's Cleveland heads. Parnelli Jones won with a Boss in 70, would of won '69 but tire failure prevented it.🏁

Know a guy that had a 70 Boss 302 and he lost to only 1 car ever . A 70 440 6pk 4 spd challenger. I so miss my 302... What a fool I was as a kid. It came out of a Chevy II that was running 5.7 8ths. I twisted my 68 Chevelle's frame with it. Bought a sweet 70 Monte Carlo, but I should have kept that motor. 8200 RPM was a normal daily sound.

In a world of L79s & LT1 engines, this mostly stock 302 has gotta be the most impressive small block ever. It's mind-blowing, I love it..
@stevejewell9263
@stevejewell9263 9 ай бұрын
Not really. The LT-1 350 is basically the same engine as a 302. All the same level of tech in it. More displacement but other wise the same engine tech throughout. The DZ302s only advantage is also it's disadvantage vs the LT1. The short stroke makes it potentially capable of little more RPM than the LT1 350 but that won't make up for the 350s higher torque, bigger HP and flatter curve across the RPM range. It's important to remember that the 302 wasn't a size chosen by Chevrolet as having any advantage vs something larger. It was simply a result of the 305 cu in limit in the Trans Am rule book for the class.
@irocitZ
@irocitZ 9 ай бұрын
@@stevejewell9263 all in all the 350 LT1, 327 L79 and 302 DZ are all similar performance wise the way they left the factory. I never dyno tested an original DZ engine but the word is that it makes closer to 400 hp than it does to 300 like GM claims. I do understand why this engine came about, my point is that regarding the three engines I see a lot less of the 302 than I do the others (in person). There's no question that all three are legendary small blocks, anyone who had the pleasure of driving a car for the first time with either of the 3 engines when new were probably all blown away. Also, imagine how the car with the big block at the light next to a Z28 felt after that light turned green? And then finding out it was just a 302 CI engine...just a different perspective, that's all..
@stevejewell9263
@stevejewell9263 9 ай бұрын
@@irocitZ A stock issued DZ302 probably made more than 300HP for sure. Cheverolet as much admits that by quoting the 290HP reading at 5,800. It's was far from a big secret that the motor could spin faster and it wasn't yet at it's peak when crossing the 5,800 mark. Peak power was found in 6,500RPM range. GM did this pretty often. They did the same with the race oriented L88 427 Big Block as well. Both engines share another trait. Time!! As time has past the racing stories and street car stories have merged. As often as I've heard people say the 302 made more than 290 and more like 400HP I've also head the L88 made more than the 430HP rating and it probably made more like 500-550HP. To which I say, "Nope!" Not in street trim they didn't not even close. I believe both inflated HP number stories come from the same misconception though. They share some truth and some embellishment due to time past. It's well documented that the Trans Am racers who took delivery of the 302 small blocks and the full on drag racing teams that took delivery of the L88 Big Blocks both immediately ripped those engines apart and went through them doing all they were allowed to in the rule book to make 'em better. Porting heads, intakes, working the carburaters and then doing headers and extension length tuned for the most power they could find and they were indeed getting 400HP out of the DZ302 and maybe even as much a 550HP out of that insane L88 427......... but for mere mortals with street cars, not nearly, so worked over.....no way they were getting these power numbers or anything remotely close to 'em in stock trim and full length street car exhaust systems. Yet, all of these stories are now 50 years back in time. So......small wonder the big numbers from race car efforts are what everyone quotes today as the real world street car performance, That may explain it but it sure doesn't make it so. Reasonable best guess for the stock 302 is power in the 330-350HP range and you spin the crap out of it to get there too. "PEAKY" is how I'd describe the '69 I owned back in the day. Not half bad at the drag strip but way down on power on the street at more reasonable in traffic RPM.

Were these engines ever capable of 9000rpm?
@stevejewell9263
@stevejewell9263 9 ай бұрын
HELL NO!! That said though. Every trick GM had at the time went into these engines. They got best of the bottom end parts you could get. Forged parts from the pistons on down to the crank. Free floating wrist pins too. The SLOW PISTON SPEED of the 302 was another big piece of the puzzle that allowed for high RPM use. Short strokes reduce the "snatch load" of each change in direction of the piston at the top and bottom of the stroke. It all adds up to a SBC capable of living with sustained high RPM use without bottom end failure. 9,000RPM though......no chance...... and it's not nearly so much because of a problem in the bottom of the engine as it is in the top. Valve train parts that could survive 8,000RPM+ need to be light weight, high strength and pretty exotic/expensive. These are pieces that won't be found in a Z/28 302. You could add 'em but now your a BIZZILION MILES away from "stock" or even a well done Trans Am racer of the late 1960s.
