I think you may find that the osmocote may over fertilize the violets over time. Its release is water activated and being in a constantly moist soil will increase the rate at which the fertilizer is released into the soil beyond what is normal. it will likely provide more fertilizer than what is desirable early on and then not last as long as the label states.
@grayturtleviolets5 күн бұрын
@@chrisb.5570 Appreciate your feedback! Will definitely be watching my plants growing in the new potting mix very closely for signs of overfertilizing! Will keep posting updates here on the plant progress!

I had added to my last batch and quickly saw symptoms of over fertilization. I went to using only water with those plants until time to repot into a new batch. I watch another channel and her plants look amazing with the slow release, tho.

@ good to know, thank you! How much Osmocote did you add per gallon of potting mix?

Since charcoal neutralizes toxins and chemicals, it has the ability to stop the pest control protection offered by the use of systemic granules. For that reason, I stopped using charcoal in my mix. My last bag of ProMix BX with biofungicide was horrible, and many plants have been suffering root rot and obvious nutrientional issues. I had issues with seed germination as well. In discussions on violet forums, I found I was not the only person to experience this.
@grayturtleviolets6 күн бұрын
Appreciate your feedback! The studies done on the effects of carbon treatment as a method to remove imidacloprid were conducted using granulated activated carbon (GAC), which has much higher porosity and absorption rate than the horticultural charcoal. Would love to see a similar study using horticultural charcoal. I'm testing the small amount as an optional ingredient in this batch, will see how the plants respond. Will keep everyone posted. So sorry about your ProMix BX experience! Peat moss is known to grow more acidic over time, I wonder if they used old peat moss in that batch, or sold it after expiration date. I'm testing ProMix HP in this round. Would love to know a good alternative to ProMix BX though, have you found a good peat moss product to substitute?

Thanks Gray Turtle for this post. It took me close to a year to understand why my African Violet leaves were getting smaller and stiffer, and why the crowns were so tight… too much light! I visited a few plant shops with three of my violets and all they just scratched their heads. At first I thought it was an insect or virus problem as some of the symptoms of too much light can mimic those issues. I had my violets under a small table top unit with very bright lights approx. 12 inches away from the plants. Six weeks ago I tried going with natural light only and the plants are all on the mend. The crowns are lest tight and the leaves are becoming more flexible. Artificial lighting can be super critical for African Violets… and the problems of over-lighting can vary for different varieties as you demonstrate in your video.
