This was awesome mate. I did the Monsal trail a couple of weeks ago but didn’t via off anywhere. Just stuck to the trail. I’ll definitely be doing this one now. It looks beautiful. I’m working my way around the whole Peak District little by little. This is going ti be my next one. Cheers for doing this, I wouldn’t of known about it otherwise so videos like this are really appreciated mate. Thank you 😊

Much appreciated that failed attempts are also shown here so that everyone can learn from them. Too bad you both got sick. As a Dutchman and not used to long walks in hills and mountains I will have to train well though I have done many long walks in Ireland but not with heavy packs. I am preparing for a trip like the WHW, hopefully next year March/April or September/October or the year after. I hope you will make a second attempt and have more luck.

Sorry it did not work out for you. But I have to say, without preparing myself 3 months in advance with training in the Gym, long walks with a half packed back pack and test-hikes (3-4 Days to test equipment) it would have been much harder for me or I probably even wouldn't have finished it.... It was my frist Long distance hike, so I wanted to prepare myself as good as I could. Greetings from Poland.

You both either ate badly prepared food or your water wasnt clean. In either case I recommend you carry 2-3% tincture of iodine with you and put 4 - 6 drops per liter of water and drink it throughout the day, it will help kill any bugs in your gut. We use iodine on expeditions in the US or Nepal and nobody was ill at all.

Big tip for next time...the more weight you carry, the more you'll enjoy your camping, the less weight, the more you'll enjoy your walking. The WHW is a 97 mile walk.

Bit surprised by the comments here. I once got food poisoning on day 3 during a 4-day hike in Kyrgyzstan. The runs, not holding down any food & barely any water, thus not sleeping at all. Luckily others in my group carried my stuff and I somehow managed to crawl over the final mountain pass, whilst occasionally throwing up next to the path. It's no joke, and if you are near civilisation you just have to be smart and abort (I couldn't do that back then as we were far from potential help). Recover and try again some other time :-) (be sure to use a water filter, even in the Scottish Highlands - I like the Katadyne BeFree)

That must be Covid that you got! Thats what all covidian people been saying for anything for past few years even if you die from cancer or break your leg lol But yeah thats why I learned the hard way to get better waterproofs and I filter everything with sawyer squezze(have immodium just in case + other tablets also) no problems so far. I finished WHW + GGW and the weather by the Loch Ness was way worse for me haha, will camped every night and managed to dry my gear somehow or on my breaks while walking.

There is a reason so many camp at beinglas. The banks of Loch Lomond are tough and quite a few people get tummy problems along there for some reason. Your mileage did seem quite ambitious and you were carrying a lot of water. Up until Ben Lomond there are refill points and after that rhere is abundant water as long as you filter it. You can carry a litre and filter where needed. No shame in pulling out. First time I attempted it was 1980 at the age of 14. We made the mistake of doing Milngavie to past Cashel and got caught in the dark in a storm. We had gone too far on day 1, got soaked and tetired to a b&b. Always best to decide to uit rather than soldier on. Next time you can get the train to Crianparich to finish the way. ATB. Ewen
@lifetheuniverseandeverything8 ай бұрын
We did consider beinglas as an option had it not rained and been waterlogged we would of had plenty of camp options crainlarich was fine tbh. The mileage wasn't really a problem at all. We had 3 easy days after to finish had we not got norovirus
@BrokenBackMountains8 ай бұрын
@@lifetheuniverseandeverything You are the second You tuber I know of to get Norovirus on the Loch Lomond stretch. Next time I do it, I will avoid eating or that tap at Rowardennan as it seems to be round about there. The sheer numbers on the WHW means more chance of Norovirus. The PCT had problems as well, I heard. I always have hand sanitiser in my hipbelt pocket especially after a highly embarassing dose on the GR34 in Brittany. I also filter burn water and don't let the bottle touch taps. A wee bit paranoid but being on a trail with a dodgy tummy is no joke. Immodium has a place in my first aid kit. I prefer walking to running😁
@888chop8 ай бұрын
Not sure if you were very pushed for time but the distance per day was rather ambitious esp with those very heavy looking bags (at least the orange one). And carrying 4l of water is no joke. Maybe needed more thorough homework on what to expect before going, so next time! 🤞👍
@lifetheuniverseandeverything8 ай бұрын
Thr orange bag was lightest bag looks bulky but it was just the sleeping mats that made it look twice the size. Distance hiked wasn't a problem at all. Norovirus is what stopped us like it says in the video.
@dmac40978 ай бұрын
I agree, I watched your pack video, perhaps film your items make it more interesting look at how some of the more established tubers do it it item by item, you carry far too much unnecessary weight, your aim should have been under 10kg for WHW including water and food. The non finishers always carry 18-20kg in a 70l -100l pack too many clothes too much gas, massive night lights etc etc loads of clutter i saw you’re med kit and power banks just insane did you really carry a glass jar of foot cream, your midge spray was too much and totally useless next time gat a small sprayer of Smidge weighs 50g and will last 3 weeks, look at some more videos it’s not difficult to get the pack down but a 45l pack and just lay out your gear, weigh everything and justify every single item and ask yourself do it really need this and if so can i make lightweight or is there a lighter alternative. Best if luck try Great glen way next time much easier for beginners. I enjoyed your spirit

Had we not got norovius we would have continued and finished weight and distance covered wasn't a concern tbh

I get the feeling that you had too much weight (which was pointless as you only camped once) and tried to cover too much distance each day. A classic case of ego over ability.

Did you even watch the video? We would of camped 6 times had we not got sick with norovirus and made it to the end.

I've never understood the fascination with water. I did the whole WHW without ever taking a bottle of water. There are stop off points along the way and you really don't need any water on a 5 hour hike.
