FYI - Ikea makes a shoe organizer that hides/stores the shoes which would fit against the wall where your shoes were, and you'd be able to use the top of it for mail, keys, etc.

Wait on the hallway runner. You have plenty of other things to move and sort. Sit with the space at least a month then see if you feel you need it to anchor the hallway. I love that floor and great NYC space!
