Which miticide do you use for spider mites?
@pinecone.jeff.carnivoresАй бұрын
I use both Floramite and Avid and I alternate their use. I alternate to decrease the chances of any surviving mites from getting resistance to one miticide. Thanks so much for the question! :)

@alexandrepons40982 ай бұрын
Yes, indeed some traits are dominant. But not all of them ;) Red sure is dominant in some way, but for the others I don't know. One would have to rigorously cross 2 cultivars, and do some statistical tests on it !

Hi there! Thank you for such an excellent video! I have learnt so much. What soil mix do you use for your cephs?
@pinecone.jeff.carnivores2 ай бұрын
I use California Carnivore's Professional Peat and Perlite Mix which is a 1 part perlite to 4 parts peat moss mix. To that, I add 1 part perlite to 1 part Pro Peat and Perlite mix for a much more porous and aerating soil.

2 of my plants did not take the repotting very well my GJ Giant form and the GJ Goliath. The giant from currently has no working traps and most of them turn black. On The Goliath most of them turn yellow and then black. but it has one working trap and one new one that is on a shorter leaf. I grow them indoor under led

Congratulations on growing these beauties, especially as a resident! Amazing video, and amazing how you can grow all these genera in the same terrarium! I was wondering though -- what are your temperature and humidity parameters in your room throughout the year? Is it constantly around 70 degrees (F), or does the temperature vary throughout the year? And what are you doing to keep Heliamphora, Drosophyllum, Roridula, and Darlingtonia alive? Congratulations -- it's quite the accomplishment!!

Interesting talk, but I think 3 points should be adressed or stressed further. First, a steady disinfection program is essential to longterm success of using standing water or recirculated for irrigation. Zoomycetes can thrive in these systems and capillary mats can (and will eventually) be covered in algae without proper measures taken. So the use of a disinfectant like Zerotol or a homemade solution of hydrogen peroxide should be applied every 2 weeks ideally, on the mat and in the water reservoirs, to curb the development of these organisms. Second point, in moments of high water demand (e.g. summer heat waves), capillary action can be insufficient at maintaining the water column in the media, so you can run into a "bottle neck" in the water supply to the roots. This of course depends on many factors, like the size and type of pot used, root system development, size of aerial parts of the plant, etc. But it should be stressed that young and recently potted plants are at higher risk, as well as plants potted in taller pots or net pots. In these circumstances, it's advisable to provide top watering at least weekly and up to once a day depending on conditions, to prevent issues. Thirdly, for those who apply fertilizers of any form to the media, salts of these fertilizers will accumulate over time in the top 1/3 of the media, due to the salts migrating upwards in the water column and then accumulating due to the evaporation/consumption of water in this layer. Again, periodic top watering with "softer" water will leach these salts before they accumulate to a toxic level. Don't use pure distilled water for watering, some EC is needed as otherwise there will be osmotic stress to the roots.

Thank you 🤩 Yes you are right, I changed the lights to spiderfarmer sf600 and the difference is extreme. Not that the bauhaus lights were bad, the growth was really good with them as well but now I have the colors as well. I also get more plants to bloom now 🎉

You mentioned a pretty strong miticide, but you didn't name it. What is it?
@pinecone.jeff.carnivores3 ай бұрын
AH! Sorry about that. I use 2 and rotate them as needed. The first one is Floramite SC and the other is Avid EC. These pesticides are extremely strong and you use a very tiny amount per gallon (read the instructions carefully, wear gloves, and mix outdoors).

Great video, very Informative! 🙂 In your opinion, what would be the general care routine for smaller baby Cephalotus until they reach the size that you have, apart from light and watering, at that stage the pitchers are tiny to be be fertilized.
@pinecone.jeff.carnivores3 ай бұрын
Well, my UC Davis came as a tiny, 2 pitcher leaf pulling and I experimented with it's care quite a bit. At first, I had it growing with my Drosera under some gooseneck LED lights in my living room. It seemed to be doing well but in hindsight, I think I was watering it too much. I had a bad moss growth problem, which clued me in about the water. But I didn't know that at the time. Then I put it in my Ikea grow cabinet with high humidity and it really didn't like that. Of the few new pitchers it grew, I lost 2 of them in a matter of weeks. So that's when I decided to put them on a heating mat on top of my computer and that's when I started noticing the lid drooping when it was thirsty. Once I realized what it needed in terms of watering, it got easy to care for these wonderful plants! So, if I had a small, young Ceph, I would make sure to watch it's watering needs first and foremost. And with a small pot, I would not put it directly on the heat mat. I think it would dry up the pot too fast. I would raise it a bit with an upside down drain saucer. The ambient temp around the mat should be sufficient for the little pot, though I haven't tried that yet. Its what I've been thinking about doing with some leaf pullings I'm planning on doing. I hope this answers your question. Please reach out if you have more questions.

@@pinecone.jeff.carnivores Thanks mate, interesting experience that surely helps. On the contrary I'm from a tropical country soaring above 40C degrees currently so they are in an airconditioned room. As you've mentioned, I'm only focusing on watering. Perhaps when they reach a decent size I'll think about fertilizing to achieve better results.
