Hahaha, Anthony maybe misremeber which synth for bass that actually was used on Thriller. I used the ARP2600 on my recreation of Thriller and did the recreation of the bass sound following Anthonys guide. Agree that you are more close to the sound using a Jupiter-8 with your described settings. We'll see if mr Marinelli makes a new video and corrects himself? Well done mate!🤩🙌👏Jan (Tecker Beats)

Hey, Jan! Thanks for your comment! From what I understand, Anthony mentioned that he was relying on his memory since he doesn’t have the official track sheet. However, those who do have the official multitrack have documentation that aligns with what some people saw on Bruce Swedien's track sheet-specifically, that TRACK 1 was labeled as the synth bass with "JP-8." This topic is almost becoming a matter of belief. Some people think I don't respect Anthony Marinelli's work, which couldn't be further from the truth. I have the utmost respect for him, but I also have the advantage of having a good ear, and I'm fully convinced that Anthony was mistaken, especially regarding the Jupiter-8. Chris Liepe, who recently released a new video, has parts of the missing isolated tracks, where the bass is again labeled as Jupiter-8. (Though, he doesn't have the final master multitrack, as he was showcasing fan-made drum sounds) 😅

@@danieljoeschI totally agree. Another thing is that Greg P does not seem to remember himself playing the bass on the JP8? But who can blame him or Anthony since it’s such a long time ago. But maybe one day Anthony gets enough questions to force him reinvestigate the bass sound’s true source?🤔

@@jangayen I think Greg was being courteous not saying, "I don't think I have played it on other synths," referring to the bass and chorus duck lead synth. The same applies to Dr. Mix. You couldn't even articulate the chorus duck lead synth on the Minimoog because of the single trigger effect. The "duck lead" is played with connected notes, so it would lose presence within the whole phrase. As a result, both Anthony and Greg have played it differently in several videos compared to the final session.

I will share it some day, when the whole project is comming to an end. I just want to share my presets when I can present the success on the whole song. When I would share it before others would flood youtube with the work that took me months over months. I just worked on the preset shown on the video again. It has a new state of matching the original sound. I am really upset, people writing me to stop commenting on Thriller Bass was a Jupiter-8 and thinking I have no respect on Anthony Marinelli. But this is not true at all. I have highest respect of his work. There is one video he tells that he has been wrong on some suggestions. And he discontinued on youtube coming out with his and Gregs recreation on the song. I really don't know what he is thinking at the moment about this. You even don't need any confirmation on a tack sheet. You just will mention that this is the instrument. I got a contact to someone having a real Jupiter-8. I will update when he made his first success on it. I am using the Harrison 32C plugins to emulate the EQ on every single instrument. But Bruce Swedien had a "bass box", a tranformer putting alle synths bass through to get more saturation, and even recorded the synths with a microphone coming out of a speaker. So that's why the sound has an additional warmness.

Hey @nef.spring I can only reciprocate! I really appreciate that we got to know each other and that you could share the new information about some misconceptions regarding the instruments with me. For me, it doesn't matter what status someone enjoys in the music industry; I trust my ears and take everyone seriously at first, even if I don't know them, who wants to share something with me. In this case, I had a strange feeling all along when I listened to the sound. The character of the ARP2600, whether TONUS, KORG, or Arturia, just doesn't sound like the original, no matter how many effects you add. The filter of the Roland Jupiter-8 in Unison mode makes the crucial difference. I greatly appreciate Anthony and consider it a great fortune that he makes these videos for us. Nevertheless, after 40 years, one can also have a false memory. This does not discredit his achievements and work. I am very grateful that we got to know each other and that you shared this information with me. Hi, I tried to recreate the bass on viking synth vst, the free version of the minimoog, and it sounded almost identical to me, I used PWM on it and retrigger mode. But I was missing something, I watched bruce Swedien's recording method and I noticed of something. He allways dubbed the synths with speakers to give it like more resonanance and reverb to the sound, like the room sound reflections, and that combined with the tape machine compresion and saturation makes a unique sound. I did the same method as Bruce, I used a tape machine plugin and had the same sound as the original recording. I knew because I could get the original stems of thriller the complete version of them
@danieljoesch
@danieljoesch 2 ай бұрын
Hello Dante, I really love the way you worked on the recreation! And it makes totally sense to me! :) Anthony Marinelli explained in detail in a video why it couldn’t have been a Minimoog. I also tried to emulate the sound with Minimoog emulations over 10 years ago, but I never managed to capture the character of the Thriller bass. I don’t know if the plugin can disable the physical limits on demand, similar to Arturia, but the way Greg Philliganes plays the Thriller bass, namely legato, it cannot be a Minimoog. In the outro, the bass plays octaves C#1 + C#2, which neither a Minimoog nor an ARP2600 can do. One must clearly distinguish that while the Minimoog did function as the bass on the album "Thriller," it was definitely not used on the song "Thriller." Many people who know it was the Roland Jupiter 8 find it puzzling why Anthony hasn't corrected himself. There are some people who own a complete multitrack of "Thriller"; for example, at music fairs, the Thriller mix is presented on Harrison mixing consoles. And Bruce Swedien, during his lifetime, gave many lectures to music students and presented his track sheets. On the song "Thriller," one track was titled: "BASS: JP-8." It doesn’t require much interpretation to understand what that means. Additionally, you can simply hear the UNISON mode of the Jupiter 8 in this sound. The filter of the Jupiter 8 is a key feature of this synth. The difference is noticeable. The only thing one can still imagine is that Bruce might have interposed his transformer developed for bass sounds. Nevertheless, these are all characteristics that enhance or saturate the sound but do not fundamentally change the character and properties during playing. For example, the ARP2600 has a terrible transient attack when trying to emulate the Thriller bass sound. The Jupiter-8 hits almost too hard and cracks if the attack is not rounded off a bit. And all this with 8 voices. It's understandable that 40 years ago, with so many options tested, one might not remember exactly what was used in the end. I tried the Minimoog sound, even two Minimoogs, the ARP2600 - I also worked with effects to get closer to the sound. Anthony Marinelli had a KZbin live video where he even answered my question about whether pedals or effects were applied to the Thriller bass. He replied, no effects and no pedals are on the Thriller bass, just pure EQing through the Harrison 32C. I know that Bruce miked and recorded many synths through speakers. But that doesn’t change the fact. Additionally, filter keyboard tracking is demonstrably activated on the filter. Listen to the parts where Greg plays the bass up to C#3 in the higher notes. And try out the Arturia Jupiter-8 ;) Best regards, Daniel

Hi, I'd like to inform you that the Thriller bass was programmed on a Roland Jupiter-8. I've gotten some documents from the original recording session that label it as such... If you program the Jupiter-8 with similar parameters as the ARP, you'll get a significantly closer sound; just make sure the voicing setting is set to "Unison" as that's what gives the bass sound its heavy, weighty sound. Make sure that on the Jupiter, you also turn on keyboard follow/tracking; that's what gives the higher notes more sparkle! At the end of the song in the rap section, the Jupiter plays a C# in octaves, which is not achievable on an ARP or Moog. Try it out and let me know what you think! Your recreation is VERY close, by the way. Excellent work!

Your points are well taken and seem logical from various perspectives. Initially, I contemplated the idea that the octaves were produced using two separate recordings-one for the lower and one for the higher C#-although this approach seemed impractical and left me somewhat perplexed. Moreover, I have a great admiration for Anthony Marinelli, but it's noticeable that he couldn't replicate the sound precisely as it was in the original recordings. This was particularly surprising to me since he was physically present during the original session. Currently, I've managed to achieve a bass sound that is more akin to what's in the video, yet I still notice several distinct elements in the original recordings that simply cannot be reproduced with the ARP2600. The point you made about the Minimoog resonates with me as well, especially the absence of higher harmonics that I'm unable to extract from the two VCOs of the Minimoog, and these cannot be compensated for with EQ. Therefore, I'm inclined to experiment with the JUP8 emulation. ;) Do you have any insights into why Anthony might be offering a different narrative? Additionally, where did you acquire such detailed documentation, if not from the official keyboard programmer of the Thriller album?

@@danieljoeschHi Daniel, I don’t know exactly why Anthony continues to push the narrative that the bass sound was the ARP-2600; I’ve reached out to him numerous times with friends and given him the documentation, and he’s only left me on ‘seen’. I don’t believe there is any mal-intent, although I’ve been ignored numerous times now. I simply think it’s just misremembered, as it’s been almost 42 years now since the album was worked on. The documentation I’m referring to comes from a Mix-Master Track Sheet by Bruce Swedien during the recording session; he published it in a very old synth magazine that has not yet found its place on the internet publicly. The track sheet was pulled and released in light of the SACD 5.1 mixes that were going to come out around 2001, but MJ would not green light this release. Unfortunately, the FBI raids on Neverland Ranch would cause this entire project to be shut down and put away, although the entire album had been finished by then.

I must also add that Anthony is correct about most of the tracks. The organ IS Synclavier, and the theremin is ARP. Other than that and the ‘Shooting Star’, almost nothing else is ARP on that song. The only thing on ‘Thriller’ that is a Minimoog is the Bass Sweep in the bridge (the one that literally resembles the THX sound). Other than that, nothing on that track is Moog.
