Haha, hopefully the game can give you the opposite feeling of being smart. I think it ended up looking complicated in the video because I'm showing mostly the last stage in the puzzle. But in the game the concepts are introduced more delicately through simpler puzzles

You know, I've once copied an Ogham alphabet down to learn, but I never got down to it, and no games or books where I got the need to practice it. (There's a Nancy Drew game who features it in 1 puzzle, but it's a small one) I would really appreciate this game just for that. It's really cool you use real-life languages and scripts.

There is a mistake at 3:27 in the solution to the problem. I added the correct solution here: docs.google.com/document/d/1UTU4jBVUmOAv7yfbQOZI12bacpr9QCI4k8dfc491jL8/edit?usp=sharing Thank you to @tellaferum for catching it!

FYI step 4 at around 3:30 appears to be wrong. Instead it should reverse step 1 to bring back IX, IV, XL, and XC. As is, those numbers will never show up as the sum. And the current step 4 also incorrectly undoes the work of step 3. As shown in the video, if we add III + II, after step 3 we get V, then step 4 incorrectly reverses it to IIIII. And as shown in the video, if we add V and IIII, after step 3 we get VIIII. Instead of correctly replacing it with IC, step 4 changes it to 9 Is.
@dariamakesgames
@dariamakesgames Ай бұрын
Thank you very much for spotting this! I indeed made a mistake in that slide. *Step 4* should be the reverse of the replacements in the *first step* not of the 3rd one. That's where we get "IIII->IV". For a case like I+III it will get converted to IV during that last step, and in case of III+II it gets converted to V in step 3. And if we add V + IV, IV gets converted too IIII and then VIIII gets converted to IX in that last step.

So the solution is to put them in units of 1,10,100,1000, then add the units, 10s, hundreds, and then write out it's sum in roman numerals? I mean, might as well turn everything into I, and the just count it up to make back numbers. II + IV is II+IIII, which is IIIIII, and 6 in roman is VI. Not much of an algorithm. XD
@telaferrum
@telaferrum Ай бұрын
That is not what the algorithm does. Firstly, the units are 1s, 5s, 10s, 50s, and 100s. Roman numerals are not quite base so there's more to it then that. And, even though I is 1 and X is 10, IX is 9 instead of 11 so just adding things up as is doesn't work, so the first step is converting it to a form where you really can just add up all the individual letters to get the sum. "write out its sum" also isn't an algorithm, so the key is how to do that. Steps 2 and 3 are about doing everything in the right order, the equivalent of carrying the 1 when adding numbers in base 10 if 2 digits add up to 10 or more. Step 4 in the video is wrong, but is supposed to be about bringing back IV, IX, XL, XC which were removed in the first step. It's not the most complicated algorithm, but it's also more sophisticated than you give credit. Converting everything to just ones isn't necessarily easier, because you still need an algorithm to count up one by one in Roman numerals. Plus it's a way slower algorithm.
@dariamakesgames
@dariamakesgames Ай бұрын
Replacing everything with "I"s and then back would also work, but it would increase the length of each step. In the game right now it's not a possibility because there is a limit to both the amount of steps and the number of elements in each step.

It's also very helpful to see your process as I'm also currently trying to make a puzzle game of a similar style and kinda stuck in the planning phase, not really knowing where to start because prototyping a story-based puzzle game isn't as easy as small arcade games (that I've made before).

Suddenly I recall many-many adventure games like Oxenfree, Katy Rain, Night in the woods and for some strange reasons also many-many anime from Niels Holgerson to Spirited Away. I truly hope you find the resources and the spiritual power to complete this project.

I had a subject like this at university when I studied linguistics, where we were given a number of sentences in a language we'd never seen before, with a part-by-part translation and then a fluent translation, and we had to deduce certain grammatical characteristics of that language. I loved that subject, and have always wanted to do more of that. Thanks to your video, I now know that there's a linguistics olympiad, and that there's a gorgeous puzzle game in the works. Love it.

Oh wow. Absolutely likes an illustration out of Rivendell. So cool Oh wow... and the language system is amazing. This could be one of the most immersive in-world experiences just because of that. Okay, I have to play this Will players be able to decipher the languages fully in-world, or will they be expected to have some knowledge of their similarity to irl languages and do research on those? Edit: nvm, I should just finish the video before asking questions! This project is incredible and I have endless respect for your approach and ability to self-assess!
@dariamakesgames

Thank you for these kind words! Fully in-game, the idea is that the player doesn't even need to know those languages are real. In fact I think it's better if they don't, then it's a great reveal at the end that those are all real languages. So revealing that fact in the video is a bit of a spoiler, but I like that part of the game a lot, so wanted to share it:)

@@dariamakesgames Appreciated! I'm not big on puzzle games at all, but this one I'd play. Since the core game mechanic revolves around linguistics, I find the watercolor artstyle simply perfect. The way the paints blend with each other can be compared to the way an understanding of a language feels at some point. This emphasizes the mystery and draws me in, to not understand only the puzzles, but also the world and the narrative you've so painstakingly prepared. If given enough time this game will be a gem, but until then keep at it. You're the experienced one here, so trust yourself. The only thing I will add is this: maybe use this correlation I pointed out in an intresting, not obvious way? Feels like to me like you already have, since you aimed for such artstyle, but nevertheless - personally I'd try to build something on top of that, since it's one opportunity for an artstyle and a premise like that. Aim for something innovative, smart and beautiful and the rest will complete itself. Can't wait to hear more!
