I love seeing what goes into these puzzles and how naturally they seem to fit into the world ! I also think it was a great idea to invite viewers to solve examples in the dev log, it’s a nice preview to the game

That is one theory. There are also ones that say they were memorial stones, or that they were meant to show the separation of territories. All fascinating stuff!

Thank you for asking! Not at the moment, the best support right now would be to engage with videos and instagram posts. And once the game is out, the best support will be to buy it:)

Haha, hopefully the game can give you the opposite feeling of being smart. I think it ended up looking complicated in the video because I'm showing mostly the last stage in the puzzle. But in the game the concepts are introduced more delicately through simpler puzzles

You know, I've once copied an Ogham alphabet down to learn, but I never got down to it, and no games or books where I got the need to practice it. (There's a Nancy Drew game who features it in 1 puzzle, but it's a small one) I would really appreciate this game just for that. It's really cool you use real-life languages and scripts.

There is a mistake at 3:27 in the solution to the problem. I added the correct solution here: docs.google.com/document/d/1UTU4jBVUmOAv7yfbQOZI12bacpr9QCI4k8dfc491jL8/edit?usp=sharing Thank you to @tellaferum for catching it!

FYI step 4 at around 3:30 appears to be wrong. Instead it should reverse step 1 to bring back IX, IV, XL, and XC. As is, those numbers will never show up as the sum. And the current step 4 also incorrectly undoes the work of step 3. As shown in the video, if we add III + II, after step 3 we get V, then step 4 incorrectly reverses it to IIIII. And as shown in the video, if we add V and IIII, after step 3 we get VIIII. Instead of correctly replacing it with IC, step 4 changes it to 9 Is.
@dariamakesgames5 ай бұрын
Thank you very much for spotting this! I indeed made a mistake in that slide. *Step 4* should be the reverse of the replacements in the *first step* not of the 3rd one. That's where we get "IIII->IV". For a case like I+III it will get converted to IV during that last step, and in case of III+II it gets converted to V in step 3. And if we add V + IV, IV gets converted too IIII and then VIIII gets converted to IX in that last step.

this looks so cool!
@guyvvbhvgdcvhyf-yl4ol5 ай бұрын
So the solution is to put them in units of 1,10,100,1000, then add the units, 10s, hundreds, and then write out it's sum in roman numerals? I mean, might as well turn everything into I, and the just count it up to make back numbers. II + IV is II+IIII, which is IIIIII, and 6 in roman is VI. Not much of an algorithm. XD
@telaferrum5 ай бұрын
That is not what the algorithm does. Firstly, the units are 1s, 5s, 10s, 50s, and 100s. Roman numerals are not quite base so there's more to it then that. And, even though I is 1 and X is 10, IX is 9 instead of 11 so just adding things up as is doesn't work, so the first step is converting it to a form where you really can just add up all the individual letters to get the sum. "write out its sum" also isn't an algorithm, so the key is how to do that. Steps 2 and 3 are about doing everything in the right order, the equivalent of carrying the 1 when adding numbers in base 10 if 2 digits add up to 10 or more. Step 4 in the video is wrong, but is supposed to be about bringing back IV, IX, XL, XC which were removed in the first step. It's not the most complicated algorithm, but it's also more sophisticated than you give credit. Converting everything to just ones isn't necessarily easier, because you still need an algorithm to count up one by one in Roman numerals. Plus it's a way slower algorithm.
@dariamakesgames5 ай бұрын
Replacing everything with "I"s and then back would also work, but it would increase the length of each step. In the game right now it's not a possibility because there is a limit to both the amount of steps and the number of elements in each step.

This is extremely fascinating! I love games that involve linguistics, and this looks like it's going to be very well made. I would recommend playtesting it with others however, just to make sure that it has the difficulty level you imagined it.
@dariamakesgames5 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! Completely agree with you! Playtesting is such an integral part of my game development process. The puzzles end up changing so much based on what players find easy or difficult or where they get stomped.

It's also very helpful to see your process as I'm also currently trying to make a puzzle game of a similar style and kinda stuck in the planning phase, not really knowing where to start because prototyping a story-based puzzle game isn't as easy as small arcade games (that I've made before).

Beautiful work. Enviromental atmosphere and charm is key for this sort of game. Referance Grim Fandango, Broken Sword and Journy Down for how the locatios feel. Small details sell the location as "lived in" and exsiting without the players input.
