Reference to Numantia and Mexican American war of 1846: Do you consider the race with which you have to deal? Who are they, then? It is the arrogant assertion of superiority and the real or affected contempt with which we have treated their race, that now nerves their arms and swells their veins! They are not merely the poor, feeble, down-trodden Indians who fled before Cortez at the first blast of his trumpet! The best blood of the hidalgos of Spain flows in many of their vein; they have cherished recollections of their ancient renown. These are the same people who for 70 years kept up war upon Holland, A war redounding neither to the honor nor the profit of the Spanish monarchy, but one invincing the indomitable spirit an haughty obstinacy of the nation of which it was waged. These are the brethren of that people who with ecstatic fury and persevering resolution resisted and finally expelled from their soil that northern Caesar and mighty conqueror, Napoleon, whose power over shadowed the earth and whose name was synonymous with victory! He seized upon Madrid (as we may seize upon Mexico) but Spain was not conquered. His brother sat upon the Spanish throne, and this was but the beginning of the war. They are the descendants in whole or part of the Celtiberians, who are said, in ancient history, never to have sighted in death--the terror of the armies of Rome, and who, in the defense of Numantia, their last remaining fortress, preferred perishing by famine, than to submission to Roman aggression; and in part, of the Suevi and Visigoths, who finally crushed that colossal Power, Rome. They are Spaniards, who walk the streets and highway, carrying the stiletto under their sleeve, the dagger under the folds of their cloaks, and bide their time. The race has deteriorated; but still blood will show itself, at the distance of centuries, when the cup of bitterness overflows, and when the oppressor least expects it! -John bell of Tennessee on the war with Mexico

I think the Japanese lacked conviction at Coral Sea and at Pearl Harbor as they had the advantages and should have pursued them. Of course they would have lost but could have prolonged their war until the US produced all those aircraft carriers that were to come along. The Japanese failed to heed the warnings of Sun Tzu in The Art of War or they would have seen the futility of going to war. The Japanese failed to see that demographics was against them and economics was their failure. Oh, and they were opposed to Jehovah God.
