@michaelpatrickmoran2 ай бұрын
Thanks for viewing and commenting. I think Peter was basically assigned the bass, as Micky was the drums. Peter was actually a folk musician in New York City when it was happening late 60's, so probably could play bass a little. Carol Kay makes sense as she was part of the Wrecking Crew, that played the studio versions of many of the hits.

We rushed home Monday nights from Girl Scout meetings. Most of the time we just caught the ending credits. I had to wait until June, July, and August to see the reruns. I had such(!) a crush on Mickey. Most of my friends loved Davy. Peter was the typical boy next door. Mike was the much older brother. It wasn’t until I was a young mother in the 1980’s that I appreciated his vocal ability.

The Monkees recorded two Barry Mann/Cynthia Weil tracks and made masterpieces out of them. This is one, and Shades Of Grey is the other. Much like Three Dog Night would do later, the Monkees could take other people's songs and make them epic and exquisite (even the non-hits).

i feel sorry for Monkees fans who missed the first generation shows. By the time the show was in reruns it had grown stale and boring. The 80s era being the most boring of all. (I was embarrassed watching MTV. There was nothing hip or challenging about it-it was just mainstream TV.) And only the 60s albums have great music, not the later incarnations. Again, the only good Monkees stuff dates to the 1960s.

I don't know about the drums, probably just something for the video. But what Micky is fooling with is one of the first Moog Synthesizers, as he purchased one for himself. The Moog was quite revolutionary and was eventually adopted by many progressive keyboard players.

@michaelpatrickmoran2 ай бұрын
Thanks for viewing and commenting. My understanding and I in no way claim to be a Monkees expert, is that Davy could play drums but the Producers of the TV show, (which is essentially what "The Monkees" was, a tv show about a fictional band ) wanted Davy up front as a vocalist as he also had experience with live stage productions and performing. Micky was given the "role" of the drummer.
@michaelpatrickmoran2 ай бұрын
It is known that Micky purchased an early model of a new invention called the synthesizer by Robert Moog. It of course became known as a Moog Synthesizer and the early models had a keyboard connected to a larger unit with an array of knobs, switches, plug-ins etc. It can be seen in this configuration in the "Darkly Nightly" video. The unit in this video has been the topic of discussion and it has been stated that this is not the Moog that Micky owned, but I have no inside information on that. I assumed it was, but I didn't do a deep comparison of the two units.

It doesn't matter that they didn't write the majority of their music, it doesn't matter that they didn't play on most of the songs, the Monkees as an entity is a magical thing, and the music is great. As great as the songs are, they needed the personality of the boys to really work the way it did. And they hands down have the best American sitcom of the 1960s.

@michaelpatrickmoran3 ай бұрын
A good history of the band is located on WikiPedia here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Monkees It states that even early on the band did provide vocals on the tracks, Davy Jones was chosen by one producer to sing lead and had some musical training. He was also competent as a drummer, which is probably why he played drums on the track, but because they wanted him outfront as the lead vocalist Micky was moved to the role of drummer. The early songs were written by a professional songwriting team Boyce/Hart, and studio musicians like "The Wrecking Crew" played on many of the hits. The Wrecking Crew was used by many bands recording in LA at the time, including Brian Wilson and the Beach Boys.

@jody85269372 ай бұрын
@@Rexerman89 Nonsense. The group did all the vocals also the did a lot of instruments by the third album and this one is the fourth. You know practically every song from the mid sixties has the Wrecking Crew doing instrumentals? So in one regard the later Monkees albums are more Monkee's than say the Beach Boys or the Byrds on their albums.
