When you were proud to say you were from Southampton. Clean, respected and valued. It is now a filthy, run down and depressing place. Apart from West Quay, ot is a shadow of its former self. I was there at the weekend, 12 October. So sad to see how shabby it looks now, so dirty.
@adminemails9 күн бұрын
With respect, my recollection is different. Southampton in 1993 was a pretty depressing town centre with not much character, often shabby, with its parade of municipal post-war ugly buildings. Sadly the beauty and character was lost with the Blitz, and department stores like Tyrells and Debenhams are missed. The High Street these days has noticeably more homeless now, and has lost a lot of the fun that all our high streets have lost due to the closing of pubs and bars (the joyless smoking ban), and there is less of an identity because of so much immigration. As a white person I'm in the minority and hear other languages more often than English as I walk along Above Bar (just an observation, not necessarily a good or bad thing, but not great for community cohesion). But I do think it is a stretch to suggest that the town centre was clean, respected and valued in the 90s. It was a shithole then when I was a school kid, and nobody respected it that I knew of - people spoke of 'townies' as if they were chavs - but it had a few fun places and exciting venues for sure, and the shopping was decent. I can't see how Above Bar is much shabbier or dirtier than it was back in those days. It was grey and unloved then too. Personally, I would only have been proud to say I was from Southampton if it were the 1940's or before.

That would be nice, but they are from a small market town in Oxfordshire called Faringdon, and an eccentric man called Lord Berners in the 1930s used to colour the pigeons back then. Someone has kept the tradition going, and a lot of people in the town also have models of coloured pigeons displayed on their window sills

"Stag Gates" present a sorry story for So'ton Civic Council. Corporate vandalism? Or practical planning?They were originally constructed around 1830 as the magnificent entrance to the Earl of Peterborough's former estate off Lodge road - 'Bevois Mount House', built in 1725. It was by then in the ownership of a local engineer, a Mr Betts, who (amongst other construction work) built the wooden 'Victoria Pier' (now known as the 'Royal Pier', opened in 1833 by Princess Victoria - but nowadays another Council Indecision Catastrophe as it still lies in ruins). By the mid 1850s, Betts had 'fallen on hard times', and sold the whole estate - most of it to speculative builders who built the present-day roads & houses. In 1900 the house became the home to the Hartley Institute - the forerunner of today's University. After the first World War the house was sold, demolished, and everything "redeveloped" to provide more housing. But the gates were acquired by the formidable William Borough Hill, the city's architect, valuer, agent etc etc.(recall Hill Lane?). In 1919 he donated them to the City - they were dismantled - the wrought-iron gates became the main entrance to the civic cemetary entrance on Hill Lane; and the huge stone gate-piers, surmounted by reclining stags, were re-erected either side of the start of Lodge Road from the Avenue - but with a tramline running right down the centre of the road. This meant, as road traffic increased, that cars got held up, and it became a bottle-neck. The Council's solution? Knock 'em down! However, nobody is sure what happened to the two stags, which were carved in stone. Tradition and rumour has it that they were stealthily recovered by W B Hill, on the back of two carts, and then buried in a garden, maybe in Regent's Park or Chilworth, to avoid detection. So the mystery is still alive . . .
