Just a tip: So the gasket doesn’t slip out from where it should be use weather strip adhesive on one side usually cover side and it’ll stay where it should be.

Hi. Do you know if the fiber mat on the firewall is totally removable from up top? I need to change mine. Thanks!

Just completed (almost) my VCG replacement on this engine and this is THE BEST tip ever. Makes it much easier to access the cover by the firewall. Thank you! Now Im waiting on my injector rebuild kit because just the replacement o-rings wasnt enough. I had broken caps and such. While that black plastic under the windshield and wiper arms are off, going to paint them black since they are so sun faded.

Im about to tackle this job on my 2010 S80 V8. Love that engine but, good grief, the leaking! Doing the Timing Cover likely required too...but I think if I do the VCG it will at least protect the alternator...correct? What's the real downside to having a leaky timing cover if not losing a significant amount of oil between changes? Thanks for the tips!!! The world goes round because of people like you willing to share information.

I would think that just loss of oil is the major effect of the timing cover gasket... But oil might get on the pulleys and belt under hard acceleration, throwing it around the alternator. I'm lucky so far as mine doesn't need to be done yet. When I do get to that point, it'll probably be an engine out job as I will redo pretty much everything. I'm tossing the idea of trying to get a manual transmission in there as I'm going to attempt the marine HP... As far as the VCG, they are actually simple but be forewarned, my injectors needed new seals and wiring was brittle... If you can, get new seals and try not to unplug the wiring from the injectors... Pull the rail and everything at once, just take it easy, little at a time and take your time... Also, take pictures as you go along!!

@@sparkyspankins9205with the VCGs off, is it any easier to access the alternator at that point or does it not matter? I think it is accessible through the passenger wheel well but wasnt sure if it is accessible with VCGs off.
