By the time you reach college, you should be able to put your critical thinking skills to use and look beyond “tradition” (although, in fact, it is not a long-standing tradition to have elephants at this walk; the walk originated in the 1920s and the actual elephants are a far more recent addition). Watching this video, I’m shocked by how apparently unaware these young adults - not to mention the college leaders - are of the danger that they and the elephants have been placed in. We know far more about elephant welfare than we did a decade or so ago. Elephants forced to appear in public events like this one have none of their natural needs met. They are under constant stress from being held in inappropriate conditions, including prolonged chaining and the ever-present threat of punishment. For an example of that punishment, look at the video entitled Bailey Bros. Elephant Abuse, involving one of the elephants used in this event, Krissy. The stress creates a dangerous situation for anyone nearby. At least at the end of the video there is one handler for three elephants, who are “held” by stakes in the ground, easily removable by a 10,000-pound animal. It is inconceivable and frankly frightening that anyone can miss the animal welfare and public safety implications of this situation. Please make this your last year to use elephants in your elephant walk. Thank you.
