I have barely spoke to my father in 10 years… he messages me every now and then and I reply. I can tell he is still dealing with his own monsters… for some reason I can’t tell him it’s ok.. being a father myself, I’ve learned fathers aren’t super heroes. They are just another grown man with their own demons… I just hope before he passes, I can tell him I forgive him.

My father passed away in 2007 and hearing this song for the first time a few days ago got this 49 year old stoic guy blubbering. I miss you, Dad. I hope you would have been proud of me. I tell your grandkids all about you.

The song 'Monsters' by James Blunt is an emotional ballad that addresses the theme of farewell and acceptance. The lyrics reflect an intimate dialogue between the singer and his father, in which a mixture of love, resignation and maturity is perceived. Through his words, Blunt expresses a serene goodbye to his father, acknowledging that they are both adults and that the time has come to let go. The song moves away from the need for forgiveness or remembering past mistakes, focusing on the present and the act of saying goodbye with love and dignity. The metaphor of 'chase the monsters away' is particularly poignant, as it reverses the traditional roles of father and son, showing the son caring for the father in his final moments. This role reversal is a powerful message about the cycle of life and the changing nature of family relationships.
