I always knew the meaning of this song- and I decided to listen to it again after having a long heart to heart with my best friend. I think we know things sometimes right away as children- and when I was little this song was about betrayal- and it rings so true tonight with the knowledge my mom is cheating on my step-dad, who was the dad who raised me and the one who protected me from being institutionalized and was with my mom for 30 years. This song speaks to my best friend who fell in love and cared for his partner only to suffer continual abuse and later false charges of rape. It speaks even to me- suffering my mother's possessiveness of not allowing me to have any bonds and at the same time herself being flaky. "Every Vow you break, every smile you fake, every claim you stake-" no, this is not a song about stalking what you desire and can't have- this is a song of being betrayed- and of being so deeply betrayed that you watch for it everywhere- you record every breath, step, and word as possible signs of a new betrayal. And the chords underneath is the longing to love and be loved- the deep sorrow- but how can you love when you cannot trust?

I was driving to work this morning, late, stuck behind a slow truck. Then this song came on the radio. I'd forgotten all about this old favorite. It immediately brought me to sad/happy tears. Reminding of what is most important. I'm so glad I was late for work to hear this.
