Funny thing, Mr. Miyagi was inspired by a Karate master, Fumio Demura. Chuck Norris studied under Demura, which is how Chuck Norris became connected to Bruce Lee, because Bruce Lee also studied with Demura to learn to fight with nunchucks.

I have seen on online where wado ryu practioners have said wado should actually be seen as a combo of jujutsu/karate rather than a karate/jujutsu style. Meaning it's jujustu first and karate secondary.

Fun fact. Seiunchin was taught to Tatsuo Shimabuku, before the founding of Goju by Myiagi. So you can see it evolution in a way. Tatsuo was a farmer, and fed Myiagi in exchange of Karate lessons one on one.

This won’t be a popular thought. I’d love to read honest, thoughtful responses, as I am in no way trying to offend anyone. 1. Karate does not teach 4:16 discipline, determination or excellence any more than anyone else who is serious about their own sport. Think Simone Biles doesn’t have that kind of discipline? 2. Karate does not teach a warrior mentality. The only true warriors are in the military. Any karate person who thinks otherwise is playing pretend. In fairness, Karate may be better at teaching a peace mentality, if taught right. 3. Karate is a way of life…perhaps. There is another word for that: religion. Both have their codes, tenets, founders, traditions, heroes, rituals, etc. No judgment if you like to live that way, just acknowledge that it is religious like in nature. 4. Does karate really teach self-betterment? Or does it merely teach the delusion that the practitioner is somehow better than others? There are many ways to self betterment, and the karate practitioner must know that his/her path is just one that may or may not work for him/her.

Okinawan Te? Sorry, that's a very general term. The martial art that Gichin Funaloshi studied under Anko Itosu was Shorin Ryu Karate, which formed the basis for Shotokan, a heavily modified version of Shorin Ryu. I'll never understand why the mainstream always tries to bury or erase Shorin Ryu from existence and not acknowledge the influence of the first and oldest style of Karate.

I'm a boxer and have no martial arts experience at all but I know of both of these masters, true masters of their art, and studied their striking style and used what I could in my boxing. Remember even though there is sport karate now, karate was designed to end a confrontation in one strike, it was not designed as a sport. But some of the mechanics I found very useful in my boxing strikes. Oyama to me was the master of strikes, he put full power behind every strike and did so in a manner that was truly deadly. I found studying his body mechanics very useful.

Oyama was a force of nature - I think the outcome would have been the opposite of that described herein. It was rumoured that Oyama could fell bulls with a single blow. Don't think I'd want to antagonise some one like that, and make an enemy of him. Animals are way more unpredictable than humans.

@@KnuckleDusterBuster Thank you for your reply. Oyama was a real animal by all accounts - I just can't see how Miyagi would have won. @@Kagak_Aktif well said. Oyama only trained with Gogen for 2 years, some would argue it takes a lifetime to master technique. A real fight would be Oyama vs Motobu.
