PCGS is the easiest to open. I had difficulty breaking open an ANACS slabbed MS64 1970 S small date Lincoln cent for my Dansco album. NGC is the most difficult. I had trouble opening up an NGC slabbed 1954 Ben Franklin half proof for my Dansco album and nearly scratched the coin doing so.

When buying these you have to look closely at the toning. The cardboard holders gave the toning a certain look. There are sets like this that are not original. Missing coins have been replaced or substituted. This one looks good.

I wish the other companies made cutouts so you can easily crack their slabs. I hate those dang things. I bust out every coin that I buy in those. And I only buy them if it's underpriced, or I really really love the coin. It's so sketchy busting open PCGS slabs.

I've always known Certified Acceptance to be a grading confirmation company for PCGS, NGC, and ANACS graded coins. But apparently they have started grading themselves. A CAC sticker was a symbol of a quality coin. But I agree with you. That holder looks cheap & ripe for tampering. My respect for their company just lost a few points. I hope you didn't pay more than about $30 for that Half.

These double mint sets with original packaging are becoming scarce. The mintage on this 1955 set was 49.656, many have been broken up for grading, an estimated 30-40% likely remain and that was of about 10 yrs ago. This is a very nice original set you have here. Also, they were mailed out the following year, so if you ordered a 1955 they would have normally been mailed out in 1956.

It's very highly unlikely that you would find a 1955 doubled die cent in a mint set. Most, if not all, of them were discovered in New England in packs of cigarettes bought from vending machines. A pack of cigarettes cost 48¢ back then. Because vending machines weren't set up to return 2¢ change, two pennies were inserted in the pack so when you inserted two quarters or a half dollar, the change was included inside the cellophane packaging. Interesting find on the S mintmark on the dime.

The reason there is two of each coin is so that you can view the obverse and reverse of each mint. Otherwise, you would have to pop the coin/s out of the holder.

It's a double mint set. There are two of each coin. The Mint used to be very slow in getting proof, and Mint set out. The delivery date of April 13, 1956, for a 1955 set is just how they delivered back then.
