A merger of the two conferences while keeping NIU football and Gonzaga basketball makes too much sense. But pac leadership has been poor and it's why the conference will end up a G6 once it adds an 8th football.

Holy rangersking craziness! NIU football is going to a better football conference with better media deals, bowl games, more playoff money, and way less stupid Tuesday/Wednesday games. NIU fans are happy about that.

A lot of that is being used to keep the conference running and some is being used to help the 5 MWC schools coming into the PAC. Depending on how the poaching penalty federal law suit goes, some of that money could be freed up to assist any AAC to move if the PAC's media deal in lucrative enough.

I try to find as much as I can. I do a 💩 job at being organized and writing down my notes, so I end up having to “remember” info I found lol. I’ve been following conference expansion/realignment going back to when the Big East “ended” and AAC was born. Media deals are newer to me because past deals didn’t seem as super lucrative as they are now, but even then I know the power conferences were making exponentially more than the “group of” conferences.

FYi, when the PAC contacted Memphis & Tulane They put out a few numbers to them, and instead of counter offer Memphis just went public saying they refused the PAC. Their local radio shows interviewed the AD and asked if he countered and he replied "No," and didn't reply as to why not counter. However, Memphis recently stated they are willing to listen to the PAC. The PAC is working on their media deal now, and what is being reported is that the eighth member won't increase or decrease the value no matter who it is. If the PAC does go beyond 8 teams this year and decides to look at some AAC schools it will most likely wait until 2027. By waiting an additional year will bring down the exit fees for any future adds. All expect the PAC's new media deal to be worth at least double of what the MWC will get.
@4PhaseDelta
@4PhaseDelta 2 күн бұрын
So this is what I wonder… is there a reason to counter if the numbers/percentages presented just weren’t good enough in general. My takeaway from what their AD said was that he/the powers that be need to know what the media rights payout is going to be. I saw the AAC’s 2022/23 Distributions and Tulane received $12.3M while Memphis received $8.93M… it’s safe to assume that 23/24 & 24/25 the distribution numbers for Tulane and Memphis more than likely increased. At the end of the day, the PAC numbers need to flat out dominate the AAC numbers. If Memphis or Tulane is only making $1 or $2M more than they are in the AAC currently, that might not be enough to get them to jump ship. They will be at the disadvantage as their sports teams will be doing more traveling westward than everyone else. Like I said in the video, PAC should’ve had a “summit” with all the schools they wanted and straight up said “this is what we’re trying to create, an East and West division…”
@jeh58
@jeh58 2 күн бұрын
@@4PhaseDelta The chances of Memphis & Tulane ending up in a P4 (ACC) are slim and none. The AAC's base media payout is 6.9-7 million per school. There are other things that are additive, like: MBB units for the NCAA tourney, & bowl games. That goes for all conferences. Donner contributions, sponsorships, and attendance are not part of that number. Estimates for the new PAC12 are somewhere between 9-14 million. Depending on where that number falls will determine if any AAC school will be interested in moving. My guess is around 13 million would be that number. Memphis fans are not happy in the AAC, they have already lost most of the conference value with SMU, Cincinnati, Houston, and USF leaving the conference. Men's BB isn't very good outside of Memphis, and the football will likely fall behind the PAC12. The MBB will definitely be better in the PAC. If E$PN does do a look in the AAC's media deal could drop because of the lost schools, but I don't t that is likely. If E$PN does though , that would change everything. If the numbers work and some AAC teams decide to move, I don't think it would happen until 2027 because of the high exit fees. AS for the media deal for the MWC, there current deal is for 3.8 million per school, and is due to end after 2025. They need a new one for 2026 and beyond. They lost their most valuable commodities to the PAC. the MWC commissioner has promised to keep the schools media payout at 3.5 million if their media deal falls below that. She also promised huge bonuses to AF & UNLV to stay in the MWC, around 20 million (plus) to each of those two schools. She is expecting to get that money from the exit fees of departing schools and a poaching clause in the scheduling agreement with the PAC12. Both of those are being challenged in multiple lawsuits in court. The poaching penalty is in Federal court. Who know when those lawsuit will be done/settled. Mean while most of that money won't be incoming to the MWC.
@jeh58
@jeh58 12 күн бұрын
FYI, the 2024 scheduling agreement was for 14 million dollars from the PAC to the MWC with an option to renew for the 2025 season. When the discussions began for the 2025 deal the MWC commissioner upped the cost from 14 to 30 million for 2025. Discussions broke down and BSU, SDSU, Fresno, & CSU decide to jump shortly after. They were tired of the lower media schools shrinking the media pie (dollars) for their schools. More schools in a conference does not means more money for the schools, unless they bring media value. Only a few schools in the G5 truly bring media value. The tree top media value schools right now, in no particular order, WSU, Oregon State, BSU. those are followed by SDSU, Memphis, & Tulane. Gonzaga is a different story all together. The five soon to be former MWC schools lawsuits are just trying to lower departure penalties. If they can do it, why not. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. As for the departure penalties, the PAC's lawsuit contains multiple points, one being The Anti-Trust act. That gets it directly into a Federal Court & Business Law. It will have little to do with college athletics, but with business Statutes. As far as scheduling, it is extremely difficult to do a schedule on short notice like the PAC2 had for the 2024 season. There are very few FBS schools in the western side of the U.S. An FBS schools cannot make a schedule filled with FCS schools, & most schools have their FB schedule out for the 2024 season. I am old and retired so I have a lot of free time to read & do research on this matter, and since I am an OSU Beaver fan it is what I have been doing for the past two years. Wish you the best of luck in the MWC. Best wishes mate.

It started before that. Th SWC breakup. The recent happenings started with Texas AM & Missouri going to the SEC. Then Texas & Oklahoma to the SEC. The B10 then trying to keep up taking USC & UCLA. Then trickle down to the ducks & UW to the B1G. B12 took the value that media wanted (ASU, UA, Colorado, Utah). CALFURD begged & borrowed to get into the ACC at bargain basement fees. All this trickle down to the PAC2 trying to keep the PAC going. The PAC taking the value from the MWC. BSU, SDSU, Fresno were tired of the bottom of the MWC dragging the conference down, value wise. Don't forget that the MWC took the best school from the WAC & destroying their football. The Big East drama as well as what I stated above all created the current situation. The media is trying to centralize the value and get everything else as low value.

Won't happen. Way too much bad blood between the two conferences and all parties involved. The biggest issue is that for some programs in the current MWC, there is a clear investment both on field and off field while other programs are effectively treading water and don't see much motivation to change. For the 2024 season there were 4 of the remaining MWC programs that didn't reach 18K for home attendance average for football. Conversely 3 of the programs leaving for the PAC were in the 33K-40K range for home attendance average for football and also had among the highest TV viewership numbers for G5. This isn't just a one year fluke either, these kinds of numbers have been going on for several years now.

As for the "break in conference realignment" that MWC Commissioner Nevarez is referring to, that would be the House settlement. Every other conference won't be bringing up any FCS football school to FBS until the House settlement is finalized. Once the settlement is finalized, I believe you will be seeing the MWC, Pac-12, Conference USA & MAC adding FCS schools. All of them need to add schools and I believe they will over the next few years.

Some Pac-12 fans are shocked that they may have to "settle" for Texas State and Sacramento State. To the Pac-12 fans, I say this: Some of you are very intelligent and understand what is going on. This is NOT directed to you. To the others who firmly believe that they will get every school they want just because they are the Pac-12. They will win all the lawsuits and not have to spend a penny in fees, just because you are the Pac-12. That you will be reinstated as a Power 5 conference because you are the Pac-12. Here is the simple message I send to those Pac-12 fans who believe this. The college football world doesn't revolve around you. You are not the straw that stirs the drink. You are not the rulers of the college football world just because you say you are "The Conference Of Champions". Some Pac-12 fans have accepted this and are thinking of ways to improve. To those Pac-12 fans, I say thank you for not buying into the delusion. To the other Pac-12 fans who believe they are the center of the college football world, it's time to grow up. The Pac-12 will be a G6 conference in 2026. Welcome to your new reality.

The Pac-12 has really changed their tune recently. Memphis & Tulane were brought up again as expansion candidates. All of a sudden, the words coming from around the Pac-12 were something along the lines of "Do we really want to travel that far? Perhaps we should stay more regional." In my opinion, some of the people within the Pac-12 believe they won't be getting the $12 mil/year necessary to get any of the AAC schools or UNLV. They are now targeting Texas State to be the 8th member. Once the House settlement is finalized, they most likely will go after Sacramento State as the 9th member. Unless they want to pursue New Mexico State, who would join the Pac-12 tomorrow.

What's going on at Sacramento State? They are making a very hard push to get into FBS and show that they belong. With the reduction in scholarships, a lot of FBS players will not have a place at the FBS level to play so they will have to got to FCS. Sacramento State has NIL money. Do they have enough to pay for all of these players or will Sac State be in a similar situation as UNLV this season. Matthew Sluka left UNLV and went into the portal because he said certain NIL promises were not kept by the coach that promised him. That coach was allegedly then UNLV OC Brennan Marion. Does Sac State have the money or is possibly someone promising more than can be delivered?

In a previous comment, I said that NIU may not be the only one leaving and that Toledo was a target of the MWC. It now appears that Toledo may be a target of the American (AAC) as well. The American has a "look-in" clause in their media deal where ESPN can adjust the deal if they feel that are not getting the value they originally thought they were getting. Besides Memphis, Tulane, South Florida and UTSA, most of the rest of the conference has vastly underperformed. They will most likely lower the value of the deal unless the American can add more value to the conference. Toledo, James Madison and Appalachian State have been linked as possible AAC expansion candidates. The problems for the MAC may not be over yet.
@stevenvitte
@stevenvitte 26 күн бұрын
This is one reason why it doesn't help to have ESPN be a media partner for everybody. They'll pick and choose which conferences to favor over others. The talk about Toledo being a target for other conferences is nothing new. I've been hearing that for months. I've hinted at this on The Big Mountain's latest live show. I'm keeping a close eye on MAC Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher from now on. Either he's going to be a competent leader and get more help from ESPN (or any media partners), or he's going to be George Kliavkoff 2.0 and be a massive failure.

Those talks have cooled down considerably. Now with NIU officially in the MWC, I believe MWC Commissioner Gloria Nevarez may go back to Toledo to see if they are still not interested. It doesn't hurt to ask to make sure.

On Toledo's part, why would they initially tell the MWC no, and then turn around and say yes? Surely Toledo's officials would be crunching the numbers just like NIU's officials did. The one advantage UNLV has over the other Pac-12 schools is the large media market. That is why they are an expansion candidate for the Big 12. A long shot candidate right now but a candidate none the less. That is one of the reasons they turned down the Pac-12. If they were in the Pac-12 and accepted an invite into the Big 12, they would have to pay a $30 mil exit fee. In the Mountain West, there is no exit fee if you leave the MWC for a P4 conference. UNLV would have to pay $18 mil in exit fees and not received the extra $24 mil the Mountain West promised them for staying. They would have lost $72 mil if they had gone to the Pac-12 and then been accepted into the Big 12. Smart business decision to stay.

I have been hearing that the Fertitta Brothers want to have UNLV in the Big 12 and are trying to make the moves necessary for that to occur in the next 5-10 years. Why the Big 12? Their cousin Tilman Fertitta, owner of the Houston Rockets, is a big donor to the University of Houston. The Fertitta family want to have some friendly games with their 2 schools in the same conference. And it appears that Tilman, Lorenzo & Frank are working together to possibly make it happen.

UNLV is historically one of the 5 worst FBS programs in the last 25 years, based on win/loss record. What has changed? I still don't understand why all those Mountain West teams went to the PAC. I honestly think that Teresa Gould or someone promised them they would get their power status back once they had enough teams,if they didn't give the AAC their power status back, that had UConn winning national championships in both women and men's basketball and had other top basketball schools like Memphis, Houston, and Cincinnati and had TV markets like Tampa, Orlando, and Houston. I don't see how they would've believed that. It's like having a totaled Ferrari with no motor, no tires, and saying, But look, it's a Ferrari. The way they keep saying the PAC 12 is a respectable brand, it's like they're praying that maybe they'll trick someone into thinking USC and Oregon are still in the PAC. 😂 And let's not forget UNLV had one win against a team with a winning record this season...

This is what I believe… promises were made and a lot of it was money related. The two abandoned PAC schools thought that if they could snag the 6 “better” MWC schools and 4 from the AAC (Memphis, Tulane, UTSA, etc…) they’d create a “best of the rest” conference that would bring in a substantial payout. The number wouldn’t be $25M+, but it would be somewhere between $15-20M. The problem is they thought all of these schools would automatically jump on the train and only 5 did… the AAC schools also shot down joining the PAC. So now the PAC is desperate to make additions and waiting to see what potential media rights deal they can land. While the PAC was doing all of that, the MWC was making every strategic addition that they could. In this new MWC, NIU, UNLV, and Air Force for the most part be the top 3 programs. NIU brings the best media market, so we should see a nice chunk of our games on Fox/FS1. The MAC did not take advantage of the Chicago Media Market the way they should have, their loss.

This is an interesting video. As a NIU alumni from the late 80s. I agree that something needs to be done. This is a good conceptual approach that NIU needs to do something. It is crazy what has happened to NIU over the last 20 years. To me, it's just lazy administration for not thinking about how to generate interest in NIU. I lived in Portland OR for 20 years and worked as an engineer for coming up on 40 years. OR State, WA Sate, Portland ST and a couple of other colleges have a great program that lines up internships with corporations in the WA & OR. Their program (MECOP) arranges internships with engineering firms in the surrounding area and mates up students with corporations. The kids promise to stay an extra year, for 2 6-month internships. The kids make enough to cover the last year and their living expenses while working. Not to mention, getting a years' worth of experience before they enter the work force. Anyway, I wish I had had that kind of program when I was a student. About 50% or so of the students get job offers at the companies they work for. It is a great program.
