Interesting video. My original starter motor lasted over 20 years. I had to replace it and the replacement only lasted 3 years and less than 18,000 km. It's a bit embarassing when you are in the shopping centre and you have to pop the lid and give the solenoid a little kiss with a ball pene hammer.... 🥴 This weekends job is to replace the starter motor with another.

I think it's pot luck with most aftermarket starters. Some will outlast the OEM part and some will be like your experience. A cheap spare in tbe drawer is not a bad idea in my opinion.

You forgot to mention the very first step in freeing the transfer lever, and that is: Remove the transmission from the vehicle! I came looking for a solution to the same problem and unfortunately this was no help
@The_ElunduExpeditionProject

If you have/had the same issue I had, there is absolutely no need to remove the transmission at all. Your vehicle must be suffering from another problem.
@78Bonne
@78Bonne 5 ай бұрын
@@The_ElunduExpeditionProject Sorry, I was being sarcastic with the trans removal comment. My similar problem is with a 100 series, and I was stumped with how to get to the transmission linkage. I can only access two of the four bolts required to remove it through the large circular hole when the centre console is removed. Your video jumped straight to the unit when it was out of the car, and the only way I could find to do that on the 100 was to undo the cross-member and lower the whole transmission assembly. So, basically you didn't show what I was looking for, so I have to assume it's much easier on the 80 Series?
@The_ElunduExpeditionProject
@The_ElunduExpeditionProject 5 ай бұрын
@@78Bonne Everything was accessed through the hole in the floor pan tunnel except for the one nut that needs to be put onto the balljoint that fastens the push pull rod to the lever on the transfer case. I do however have an 80 series which might not be the same. My technical content tends to be 80 series sprcific.

Ive done similar things to my 62 series, and have now had several different sets of 33"x12.50-15 on the thing, some feel like im driving with the handbrake on, the old 3F is no powerhouse! My conclusion is that the different treads and maybe rubber compound on the different makes of tyres makes a difference in fuel economy. Not so much the size of the tyre. At the moment I have some malasian MT's on, btw a good tyre that ive done three 7000km trips with, no flats, in outback Oz and its used as a daily and the fuel economy has never been better!? Mind you its never fantastic!! While my 100 series with BFG AT tyres, well, its not so good. As well as that when they wear towards the end of their life fuel economy gets better as well. Just something to think about and maybe evaluate I guess?
@The_ElunduExpeditionProject
@The_ElunduExpeditionProject Жыл бұрын
Thank you for your comment Paul, I really appreciate it. Unfortunately the only experience I have with 33" tyres is this one set of KUMHOs and they were pretty much poked when I got them too. You may be right about tread patterns and rubber compounds but I definitely think that the slightly different ratio helps. As soon as finances allow I will be purchasing a set of 33s to go on the 15"rims if for no other reason than I think they look amazing. The added lateral stability that the +/- 6" wider track (due to the 2" wider wheels combined with the -44 offset rims) makes is also very welcome! Thanks again for your input!

I don't know the fiat but I woukd open the solenoidcand look for a similar problem. My guess is that it has similar contacts with similar wear issues. When cold the tolerances are tight enough to jam the solenoid in the closed position. Obviously once it gets a little heat from the warm engine those tolerances ooen up just enough not to jam the contact.

Would like to see how you removed it aswell, does rubber boot just clip out? And are there any gaskets and so on when putting back on to transfercase?
@The_ElunduExpeditionProject
@The_ElunduExpeditionProject 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Juandre. I did not know it but mine is actually missing the lower rubber boot. The lower boot slips over the gear lever stub (quite a difficult fit) All mine has is the big upper boot that covers both gear levers. I only found out later that there is supposed to be another boot under the top boot which acts as a dust cover. But to answer your questions, the upper boot is just held down to the floor with a few screws. Remover the screws and the boot is free. I did not totally remove the top boot but worked through the gap made by lifting the rear edge up. That selector unit does not bolt to the transfer case at all, it bolts to a flat pedestal on top of the rear of the gearbox. This pedestal is not open to the internals of the gearbox so there are no gaskets at all. The selector unit is totally separate from the workings of the gearbox and links to the transfer case with a pushrod. I hope I have answered your questions. If you still need to know anything more, feel free to ask.
