Looking back.... this town accountant is in jail, and it is amazing that Jennifer Callahan is still town administrator for another town. The frustration that came out in this meeting was just the beginning. The disdain from Callahan in support of the accountant who has since been convicted of fraud is incredible.

I am so impressed by this Eagle project!! I grew up in Blackstone, and am looking forward to visiting this memorial. I am sure all the people of Blackstone are honored and proud to have this beautiful memorial in their town.

I find it hilarious to see a thumbs down to this video. Seems like some people really don't want Millville to move forward, survive, and prosper, unless absolutely nothing changes. Good luck with that people.

It's about time!!! I've been telling the Assessor's Office for years they needed to do this! Lots of homes were undervalued due to permits not being recorded. One reason the town was losing money.

I told the Assessors Office a few years back that there were many, many homes that did not take out permits and were never assessed a new value. Back in the 80's amd early 90's, Assessors went around to assess home values to capture these properties that should have been assessed for additional revenue. As recent as 2015, the Assessor's Office told me that they cannot go into a person's home to see their improvements. But I said, on the contrary: the way they accomplished it back then was to assess it HIGH and the homeowner would request a visit to address these additional assessments with a walkthrough. That's how they would come to a true assessment.

To my friend and neighbor Kara, I was unable to respond to your comments at the meeting and it was not the correct forum anyway. So I will try to explain the frustration you sensed at the meeting. We live in a great neighborhood and town to raise a family and your home is a good example, it was built in 1987 and you are the third family in it. So for most of the past 29 years, your house has had school aged children. The approximate taxes on your property are $4500/year of that 58% is spent on education. So $2600 of your taxes directly benefit your children's education. You have 2 children in the school district which has a per pupil cost of $13,100 so it costs $26,200 per year for their education. If you chose to send your children out of district the costs would have been much higher, but I think that you are getting a great value for your local tax dollars. You also pay state taxes and I am sure you pay much more than the average Millville senior. So you might expect the state to send more of your dollars back to the school system . However the opposite is true, the higher the town's median income the lower the state contribution to the schools. So families like yours and mine that raise the town's median income level result in less state funding putting more of a burden on our senior citizens. So now let's try and understand the perspective of a hypothetical senior citizen. Let's say I am in my 90's lived my whole life in Millville and never had any children. Yet I dedicated my life to bettering the town of Millville especially the school system so much so they named the auditorium after me. My income is fixed and below the town's median average yet I have the same property tax rate as you. I do use the senior center which has seen cuts but we work hard to keep the expenses low, in fact even if we closed the center the savings would not come close to covering the extra money the school is asking for. I do understand the importance of education which is why I voted for the school budget the finance committee recommended including a local contribution above the state mandated baseline. However. I am reluctant to vote for additional funds which would negatively impact the town finances. The point I am trying to make is housing developments like ours that attract young families cost the town more in education expenses than they bring in with property tax revenue which puts an unfair burden on our senior citizens. It is sad to see the school system lose the support of our senior citizens who have sacrificed much to educate our children. If you look at the MES dedication plaque you will notice that the building committee and school committee had many senior members not to mention the very generous land gift from Sgt Berthelette and his family. You commented on class sizes of up to 27 students and the cuts that will be made if this extra money is not approved. I agree we have large class sizes and the cuts will impact the education of our children. It is always amazing how far a small amount of extra money goes compared to the over $23,000,000 already budgeted. The school district spends $13,100 per pupil so for 27 pupils the school has $353,700 to spend for staff, supplies, and routine maintenance. The school buildings and capital improvements are paid for separately by the towns. The BMR school district has a student teacher ratio of 12.5/1 which is better than the state average of 13.2/1. This is a great credit to the school administration. The school district must have specialists and small classes to average out to 12.5. I believe the problem is with state mandates such as school choice. The school district spends over $24,000 per pupil for out of district schools. Also the state uses income to calculate state reimbursement rate would only make sense if the towns were receiving local income taxes which they are not. I am sure that there are many more state requirements for testing, accreditation, etc. that add significant cost but have little educational value. I understand the school administration has no control over state mandates and are doing the best they can but they should not expect that seniors will be able to fund this system that is biased against them. In conclusion, I feel both Blackstone and Millville should be proud that they are funding their schools at a higher level than many wealthier communities such as Franklin, Shrewsbury, Marshfield, ..... My hope is the super town meeting will result in everyone understanding these problems are caused by the state's dysfunctional funding system and mandates. Blaming the towns, school administration, seniors, or parents is misdirected and non-productive. Paul

This is what you get for .20 cents a hour 5 clowns trying to run a meeting at clown hall, this is very upsetting for the amount of taxes I pay to see this, maybe it's time to give this lovely town back to Blackstone at least their professional and have common sense more than what clownville has....

John i agree the music presentation is priceless even better when the car comes around clownhall. But the bottom line is we DON'T NEED IT I pay enough in taxes now and have nothing to show for it, we don't even have a real fire department just a bunch of want a B'S with garden hoses. Clownville needs to invest in 10 speeds not 36k CARS!!!
