That was a coyote. Coyotes attack the livestock of ranchers and farmers. Using a gun is way more humane than some people choose to kill them too. A lot of those who have lost livestock to these predators are usually extremely busy because it's a lot of hard work to live completely off of your land, and they don't have the time to set up a recording of coyote pups crying out (like you hear in the background of the video here), and lay in a hide somewhere for a long time to potentially miss their shot. So they use traps that break the animals leg, and hold them in place until someone comes along and puts them out of their misery, or they eventually die from blood loss caused by the trap, or worse yet they are now crying out because they're injured and trapped, which draws the attention of other predators who stroll up to an easy (but still alive) meal.

It's likely that the livestock owners in the area wanted the coyotes thinned out, to help lessen the loss of newborn calves, lambs, etc.
