I made the milk paint following your instructions on Sunday. It seemed to be a bit thicker than your mixture. I put it ins plastic container and put it in the refrigerator. I took it out today (1 1/2 days later) to start the painting process and it is has jelled. Is there a way to warm it up and thin it down to use? My thinking is to let it come to room temp and use an immersion blender to break it up. Any helpful comments out there?

@WoodandShop Really enjoyed your video on woodworking benches! I’m 53 now and when I was 18 & 19 I fell in love with the Roy Underhill TV series and books. I even met someone who moved out to my neck of the woods in Oregon from one of those colonial towns on the east coast where she did early American woodcraft. I enjoyed that time immensely. I’m just starting to plan a new shop and get into woodworking again on our 24 acres overlooking Hagg Lake. I love the old hand tools and am drawn to that, but appreciate the efficiency of power tools. I’ll have to see if I lean more strongly one way or another as I plan the space needed in a new building and then layout and infrastructure. It’s exciting and can’t wait to see where this leads. Any suggestions about what to read at this stage is welcome!

It can be seen without an armed eye that the workbench does not have a flat surface. I'm surprised how you can use such a workbench.
@ApexAlphaFoxtrot4 күн бұрын
With extensive experience of teaching others, I guess 😆 However, it would take no time to plane it flat like they usually do annually

Cos he has the skills and took the time to use his time to hone his skills so he could use such a bench instead of criticising other people

Why is it most tables make you put a 6" Through-Tenon connecting the legs and table, but this bench only needs one peg the size of my pinky?
@handyboy20008 күн бұрын
I'm always surprised that the leg clamp doesn't break the dowel nearest. Especially as it's tapered, and only has about 1/2" bearing face. The dowel in back is slotted, so it's no help. I wonder if you went a little heavy tightening the vise, would you pop the dowel, or distort the hole its in, if the structure is pine or fir.

Thanks for the video...I've been using mine for years. Not sure if I'm using it correctly but when using the 1/8 in iron I only use one skate. Am I correct? Again thanks for the video.

I had to build this after I saw it and the top is 3.5 inches of Ash butcher block, heavy! I haven't weighed it but it's about more than I want to fool with.

Is it wrong to just use a coping saw the whole way through? Why the different saws ?!?

Making one with a 1 1/2 inches full laminated top I took from an old commercial already glued cherry door. (I won't move it anywhere so I know the top will be heavy but not much in case I move off this place) Most versatile possible workbench I think. Easy to make, movable, angled so it won't move around when working, not much pieces to make, will be adjustable. Just perfect for first workbench to anyone.

I can see this bench being very nice, I definitely want to try to build one some time. I made a huge "roubo style" with some tweaks of my own. Will says here the extra width of the top is not needed. And I kind of disagree, if you work without an end vice or a "wagon vice" you need some sort of sideways clamping for wider boards, it can be pegs or you can use a doe foot + a 45 degree offcut hold down with holdfasts. But you need the extra width. I guess it depends what kind of work you do. In this case he does have an end vice, it solves many problems in that regard ;-)

One other point, if you have ever had to strip paint, this paint, milk paint, has different solvents that work with it than other paints. Removing layers of milk paint, layered with oil paint for example, is a real bugger to do. So this shows the strong, long lasting nature of the finish. Combined with a shellac top layer, it's durable.

People had so much pride in quality craftsmanship back in the day that has been replaced by mass production mdf garbage. I live I custom built house on 10 acres from the 1960s that use alot of turn of the century items being discarded from 1900s home being renovated and now I am restoring those items from 120+ years of use and I totally appreciate what went into the crafting of those items by hand.

LIKED THE VIDEO A LOT. IF YOU HAVE A VERY LARGE TREE TRUNK. PERHAPS 36 INCHES IN DIAMETER WITH SOME BRANCHES. CAN YOU FOLLOW THE SAME PROCESS? ARE THERE ANY SPECIAL CRITERIA TO PICKING OUT THE LUMBER? HAVE A VERY BIG SECTION OF TREE ON A JOBSITE. WOULD LIKE TO USE IT FOR SOMETHING IN A FIREPIT AREA OR A VERY LARGE PAVILLION AND BBQ AREA I JUST BUILT.
