80% of western aikidokas are not fully using aiki or blending but instead focus on using less physical force. this is also why it is common (unfortunately) to instruct the uke NOT to resist, because it would show the ineffectiveness of the aikido technique (because it is done with force, albeit very little force, a technique does not work against a resisting partner.). A technique done with blending or aiki, the uke can try to resist or push as hard as he wants but it is not only to no avail, the redirected resisting energy will actually make him lose balance and fall.

Iriminage is also called the 20 years throw. It takes a long time to master because there are so many points. Not only the difficulty of the technique itself but also the actions of the uke are important. A lot of people do not know how to execute a proper shomen. And yes, this is more difficult then it looks like. Especially beginners have great difficulty with a proper strike. But you need it to do iriminage well. Perhaps thats why it is called a 20 year technique.
@AikidoKenkyukaiSB
@AikidoKenkyukaiSB Ай бұрын
Exactly. I see not only white belts, but black belts as well who are not actually doing a proper shomen uchi. And as you say, executing the technique properly is dependent upon the quality of the attack.
@hobowithawaterpistol9070
@hobowithawaterpistol9070 21 күн бұрын
I completely agree with you. I would emphasize on the importance of a proper attack, because nobody truly learns if the intent of the strike doesn’t feel real. Slow is amazingly fine, in fact it’s fine for many practices and for years of practice. At some point you test your skills at a faster speed with a partner you trust, but otherwise slow is perfectly fine. What I see too often is someone does a Shomenuchi strike and slows the cut down just before it would make contact with Nage’s head, and the Uke doesn’t actually follow through with the cut. This is frustrating because at this point all the Uke has given you is their arm and not their whole body. If the back heel of the Uke does not come up off the mat, the Uke still has their balance. This doesn’t help the Nage to learn how to properly move for Irimanage. As for me I still struggle with Iriminage, but I noticed if the Uke comes in slow or otherwise with intent, then I have those moments of unity with my partner.

A great video again. I love the way you pronounced my name! Very good Dutch!!!!!! As for your question: Sometimes I do partner exercises instead of the warming up. Mostly I do the warming up for 15 minutes. I have done this for 30 years. After the warming up I mostly start with a kokyunage. The uke takes ushiro ukemi.
@AikidoKenkyukaiSB
@AikidoKenkyukaiSB 2 ай бұрын
Hah! Glad to hear that I did well on the pronunciation! 😇 In my own dojo, I do traditional Aikido warm-ups and then 99% of the time, the first technique of the class is suwari waza shomen uchi Ikkyo. Except for one person, my oldest student in Los Angeles is about 41 years old. The rest are all in their 20s and up to mid 30s. So everyone’s knees are OK. Starting off in suwari waza gives people a great stretch in the hamstrings and glutes if the knees are healthy. Also, it’s not as far to fall. But I almost never start this way when I teach at seminars because there are so many people with trouble.

why can't you guys in the USA be more like the Japanese in expressing Aikido. For some reason you blunt the purpose of this martial art by somehow framing it as a 'peaceful' martial art. There is no such thing. Martial arts is for survival and to hurt people. Americans seem to think that Aikido absolves you of that violence. Stupid. That's why Americans can't do this stuff properly.

Martial arts legend, Dan Inosanto, an expert in martial arts as vast as arnis, boxing, judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under Jean Jacques Machado, and one of few certified by Bruce Lee to teach the philosophy of Jeet kune do, took up aikido in his 80's stating that it was the movements of aikido, especially its emphasis of how to fall, that drew him to the art.

It's not "fake". It's a recognized budo (martial arts) that can trace its lineage to traditional jujutsu from the battlefield. If you mean that it may be too dogmatic and not appropriate for combat sports then you could make a point. I am currently a purple belt in BJJ and also do muay Thai but have done and can appreciate other more conventional martial arts including aikido. Your view on martial arts is rather myopic thinking that a martial art has to be effective in MMA or else it is "fake". That's YOUR definition of a martial art. To many other people whether it is BJJ, or aikido, judo, or taekwondo, kendo, capoeira...whatever...serves other purposes than knowing how to hurt or tap someone out. It's about accomplishing personal goals and development, health and exercise, social gathering, a form of physical and mental therapy. Comparing aikido to MMA, is like comparing a Toyota Corolla to a Ferrari and calling the Corolla a fake car because it cannot beat a Ferrari in a drag race. That's not the purpose of a Toyota Corolla. BTW many aikido techniques are also part of the traditional Gracie Jiu-jitsu self defense curriculum because both arts have lineages to Japanese jujutsu. In the case of Gracie Jiu-jitsu through Jigoro Kano's old style judo. Tip for life: learn about things and people before criticizing them.

Thanks, Arjan. The original version included two more points: what to do if you need to drink water during class (get off the mat and go out of the view of everyone else) and what to do if you’re late (wait at the edge of the mat for permission). But I found that when students watched that video the number of late arrivals INCREASED. And people were jumping off and on the mat for water at the drop of a hat. So we cut those parts and this is the new version.

@@AikidoKenkyukaiSB Drinking water is always a big thing for people. In the Netherlands there is no need to drink during practise. You can endure! Only when it is really hot (and even then, 1,5 hours aikido come on... It is not that intensive!). As for being late..... The door at the gym is locked so you have to knock. SO everybody knows you're late haha. They come in the tatami, bow to the kamiza and bow to the instructor and just slip in the group. In my opinion it is not worth it to draw the attention of the instructor. I do not want want to pay attention to people who come in late. Don't get me wrong but I have my teaching and concentration at that time. But this is different everywhere!
@AikidoKenkyukaiSB

@@arjandevries-imajukuaikido great. The earlier version of this video instructed people to try not to drink during class. BUT if they absolutely HAD to get a drink, they should get off the mat to do it. So then all my students started getting off the mat constantly to get a drink of water! It also, instructed them to wait for permission to get on the mat in instances of arriving late. So then the number of late arrivals increased. So we had to re-edit the video, taking those parts out. Oh, and we’ve tried locking the door. But knocking and coming in late is not at all embarrassing for some people. So it’s not an effective solution. But these days no one ever comes late anymore. I think it’s partly, because I make a speech at the end of class periodically, telling them “don’t be on time for my class. Be early. Just doing the minimum required is an insult to yourself. Let’s really make an exceptional dojo.“
