What was the hollower you were using?
@kevindcreates4 күн бұрын
Hey Jerry! thanks for the comment, the hollower that i finished the inside of the bowl with is a 3/8" negative rake round carbide tool. i got it on Amazon April 23, but i dont think its sold on there any longer. I prefer to finish with a negative rake becuase it resists tearout. and makes for less sanding

Finish is nice. Only thing I’m confused on was why you were using a #3 hollower on an open bowl like that. Just curious.
@kevindcreates28 күн бұрын
That’s a great question and I’m assuming you are talking about the goose neck carbide cutter… because I’m New to the hobby I only have 5 turning tools, two of which are negative rake, this one has a very wide flat steel forearm, so it doesn’t try to twist out of my hand. I generally gravitate to this one for hollowing out anything ! Thanks for asking ! Do you have a channel too? I’d love to check it out 😀

@@kevindcreates definitely understand the flat bottom part. Check out easy wood tools. All their carbides are squared so they have a flat bottom but yes the hollowers have a wider flat bottom. I’m a demonstrator for easy wood tools.

Apologies if I missed it somewhere, but what wood did you use and what food safe finish did you use for the inside of the cup? Thanks
@kevindcreates29 күн бұрын
I’m not sure that I mentioned it ! That was a branch from a pin oak tree from my parents front yard. The food safe finish is marketed by the name tried and true. It’s a mixture of wax and linseed oil (not boiled) and bees wax. It gets burnished causing friction and heat closing up the pores of the wood

Please keep posting, as a new turner appreciate your techniques and resourcefulness. About at 5 minutes use a scrapper? Can you tell me the make/brand and also your carbide tools? Thank you.
@kevindcreatesАй бұрын
Thank you for the kind words David! Your comment definitely makes creating worthwhile 🤗 So the 5 minute or so I am using a “negative rake carbide cutter (round shape).“ mine, I got from Amazon in a two piece set the brand was Vinwox; I just looked them up and I can’t find that two piece set but vinwox still sells a few sets. The negative rake leads to less tear out so I use that on my final passes on the inside of the bowl; coupled with a liberal amount of oil helps sheer the tear out off ; light slow passes with the motor turned up will give you less to sand. My regular turning tools are the standard carbide set from penn state industries online, they sell a few sets and they are all great tools. These came with my lathe kit and I only have to replace the cutters rarely . If you have any questions, I am happy to talk through them, or create a video explaining anything you might need keep in mind I’m new too, but I’m happy to share what I know ! Cheers David !

nice bowl. that bandsaw cutting scared me for 2 reasons...i cut with the flat side down since the material is safer against the table...and the blade guard needs lowered for safety.
@kevindcreatesАй бұрын
It’s funny you mention that ! So I shot this video, then KZbinr “turn a wood bowl” comes out with 7 mistakes on the bandsaw the following day. I love his content, said shoot, he’s right I just broke two very important rules. Then during edit, contemplated not even putting the beginning footage in but decided for it to be. That being said , in the next month I’m going to be making a video creating a circle cutting jig for the bandsaw which will eliminate all the danger . Totally agree after watching his video about the guide being too high Thanks for the input and know that I will be altering my methods moving forward. Also thanks for watching. It’s people like you that watch and engage, that keep me making content.
