This lesson will really help your playing! And make it easier to play anywhere on the neck

I find this method of playing interesting even though I've been playing conventional lefty for nearly 15 years. I've tried these chord shapes on other people's guitars a few times. I must say that the e minor 7 with the g on top is hard on my hand, when I do it the way you do it. If I were playing this way, I would use my index and middle finger for fretting the e minor shape with the thumb on top. It's just more comfortable with my hand size(my hand span is not that large, although, I can reach a tenth on a piano.) I like your videos, songs and covers. especially the devil at the crossroads song. I hope you make more videos at some stage in the future.

Oh man...that's an obscure one! I only played it live one time because I meant for it to include the actual dance element (I think I pulled it off pretty well). I'm running out of instructional video ideas, but I'm uploading lots of music on another channel these days. I keep telling myself I'll do more of these "when things slow down" (whenever that is...).

thank you for this video! i started learning guitar by borrowing my (right handed) sister's guitar - i cant change the string order or get a left handed guitar. i tried learning basic chords through youtube videos but they always felt uncomfortable, then i realised im not using my guitar the same way as other players. the way you play the chords feels much more natural, tough im still having trouble with the thumb haha

I just bought a bass and I felt kinda instantly that it would probably be easier for me to play stings upside down. does that make any sense? with bass you don't play chords in similar way, but I think it's just harder to reach the strings on top of the neck vs bottom.

No matter how much force I put down on the strings when I play the individual strings, they sound muted Kane dull

@@JonCrocker that's unfortunate. What are The chords of The song?
@JonCrocker8 күн бұрын
@@Apollomusic22 The verse is like this: b minor, b minor/A, then G major (add a major 7 if it feels right)--this is for each line of the verse. Sometimes before starting the next verse I'll add an Asus4 after the G major. The chorus is: e minor, A major (so what have I got now?) D major, G major D major, A major b minor (passing through A major to) G major, then hover on the Asus4 until you are ready to go to the next verse, and at the end I alternate between G major and the Asus4. Hey! Ive been playing acoustic this way for many years, I have recently dwelled into the electric guitar realm but im facing a huge problem where ill have to mute on my right hand(fretting hand) while playing for say a power chord. Its particularly hard as i usually use my index finger as anchoring note(Exept barre chords). Im currently learning to play the Hotel California solo. Do you think it is a lack of practise or should i change the technique entirely?
@JonCrocker3 ай бұрын
That is a difficult question. It will depend on the situation. I just watched one of the solo tutorials for the song (never thought of trying that one myself...it is beyond my ability at the moment), and I think I'd probably be doing a lot of partial barres (just the higher pitched strings) with the index finger of my fretting hand. If you're getting extra sounds from the side of your fretting hand hitting the lower strings, fixing that could be a matter of technique (how you sit/stand and hold the guitar), but also try different amp/effect settings--I find that when I play electric, these settings can really exaggerate or minimize extra noise. There have been times when recording that I've had problems with the lower-pitched strings getting in the way during some guitar parts (specifically when playing slide parts), and I've fixed that by putting some fabric under just those strings (between the strings and the fretboard) to dampen them. It isn't replicable live, but then I'd never be playing slide guitar solos live either, so I guess it doesn't matter.

i have a bunch of 6-hole trucks from the '90s. i have some stage 5 (or 6?) indys that i drilled the new hole pattern in the baseplate. ventures were the first to change. indy standard 159 and bigger still have 6-hole plates. i don't really care for thunders, but i like how ventures increase the wheelbase. powell old school reissues only recently reverted to the old school hole pattern, maybe last 5 years or so. i just broke a mcgill skull/snake reissue from early '00s and it was the new school bolt pattern.

I think you're right about the Venture bushing changeover. I rode more Ventures than anything in the 90s...some green ones, then Venture highs when they came out (purple bushings!). I think that's the same time they switched to red bushings for the lows. I switched back to the red bushing lows eventually. They just felt right to me.
@diplenski5 ай бұрын
@@JonCrocker i like the highs. i like the lows too but they're prone to wheelbite especially since i like big, wide wheels 56mm. so i run 1/8" risers on the lows. i should prob get a new set of lows, i'd prob get the 8" instead of 7.65" since i ride bigger boards these days. my highs are the 5.6(8.25")

@JonCrocker6 ай бұрын
Funny--I remember being "look out, the guitarist is at the drums!" I once wrote a three chord song simple enough where I got to be at the drums, the drummer got to play bass, and the bass player played guitar. It was fun to mix it up, even in practice. Got a couple videos on the to-do list that I might get around to one of these days...

Hey Jon, have you found it feasible to play Never Going Back Again by Lindsey Buckingham using this lefty upside-down method, without contort-crippling your right/fretting hand on the higher fret barre chords? If you’ve managed to play this tune, would be great to see your techniques.
@JonCrocker7 ай бұрын
Hmm. I never considered trying that one. I looked up the chords and tried it before watching a live version (I remember having this one on a tape that I'd always listen to in my first car, high school days...). I think the higher chords are actually the easier ones--but I'm playing a slightly different voicing (half-barre) that preserves the main melody (the topmost notes going from octave, down to scale degree 7, back up to octave, if you know what I mean). Might do a quickie to show that. There's been a few requests I've been meaning to record but just need to motivation to get around to it, so I might do several in one batch.

So this video is your way of saying that it's OK, and just be happy with the right handed guitar you're stuck with? That concept is funny when I look at you in this video with that cutaway on the guitar aimed right at your face. Actually, it's not funny at all. It's pathetic. And no, dude. It's not OK. Every stringed instrument in the world is made, and always have been made for right handers. This is the worst instrument in the world with which any left hander to get involved. Well, any stringed instrument actually. In terms of this instrument, you're not even an after thought. The only people that have even acknowledged your existence at all, have been asians in the aftermarket or very much improved guitar knock off models for left handers, umm. .., made and finished in asia. In fact, if it wasn't for the asian manufacturers, the likes of you would have absolutely nothing.

Hey hey Mr. Teacher friend, can you please maybe share whatever exervises you do to strengthen your fingers to move smoother/less clunky when you're moving them between chords or just playing in general ?
@JonCrocker11 ай бұрын
Unfortunately I have never done exercises and wouldn't be able to recommend anything other that what you'd find with a Google search. I will say that this is a big hurdle and that getting past it is kind of a big deal. I do tell people to fret from directly above the string and slightly closer to the soundhole (to limit muting and buzzing), but there are plenty of chords I play with fingers smashed flat/sideways (they only work because I've done them so many times). Also look for a video later in this series called "playing chords comfortably." There are lots of cheats for certain chords that work well in the context of a song but are a lot easier to play than what you might find in a chord chart.

Dear Jon, thanks for your quick response, as you say, the F#13 is a bit of an awkward one.. I've been playing guitar, fairly seriously, for 40 years using the 'left-handed, upside down' method, and I've always found it practicle, and straight forwardly natural until I tried to play "Isn't She Lovely" Stevie Wonder, anyway, if you do come up with "a solution" I'd be intruiged to see/hear it..Many thanks once again - Andy in France

Hello Jon, Could you somehow show me the best, and easiest way to play an F#13 in the left-handed, upside down method? Its the second chord on the opening part of "Isn't she lovely" - Stevie Wonder song, and all my efforts to make it "sound right" have so far failed..many thanks - Andy (English) in France..

That's a very good question. I was looking up chords on chord sites and they all suggested f# minor 9, which is a lot easier, but I don't know what the sheet music looks like. I played around with a couple of different ways to do it with an added 9th and an added 13th (definitely harder than a 9th). Will try to get something done with it soon. Thanks for the idea!

Good cover, Jon. I see you're using your pinky for every root note and fifth. I've tried it using my pinky as the root, and my ring finger as the fifth. Also, i can't seem to figure out what the second song you played is? I don't think this style of playing would really get enough views for the video to be taken off youtube. I like your videos and i hope you make more in time to come.

Ahh...that other song was about a character named Rocky. Very famous band indeed. I imagine that being able to alternate those two fingers would give you more speed. My problem is just that my ring finger is the lazy one and not trained for anything other than just being there. Definitely something I could work on. If you have video suggestions I would make more--I've kind of run out of ideas at this point (or at least as far as my own ability allows me to show). Thanks!

Cloudberries are delicious but not very good by fall time. There are also many mushrooms but I am still learning about those (and I wouldn't want to make a video just in case somebody misidentifies one and gets sick). Lots of good stuff to eat, though! You mentioned that the old style made it harder to nose slide but are there any other benefits or downside to it. Like does it make it harder to turn or anything
@JonCrocker Жыл бұрын
It didn't really make it harder to noseslide (maybe a tiny bit more drag?), it was more a matter of noseslides destroying the bolts. I remember this being an issue for me with only one set of trucks before I got new Venture featherlights. It doesn't affect anything else, really. If anything, it's slightly easier to access the bolts with the older bolt pattern (hanger is less in the way of your wrench).
