This remix succeeds in not coming off like "look! look! Its gameboy! So retro!" but rather, this remix feels reminiscent of the way songs actually sounded on the system, with how you created this remix it reminds me of some of the music in Tetris 2.

Green Hill Zone has been remixed numerous times by both Sega and fans alike but this remix stands out from the crowd for a number of different reasons. I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to music theory and composition so forgive me if my description is not formulated in a musically sound manner. From my very casual perspective, the composition is full of energy and atmosphere. That's especially true from 2:01 - 2:30 which is my new favorite section in any green hill song. Its so etheral and serene yet it doesn't slow down the piece. It would be interesting to see this sheet music transcription being played through real or digital intstruments on a CD quality audio recording. Regardless, this is one of the best remixes of Green Hill Zone out there and shows a mastery of musical craft especially coming out of a machine with such limited hardware.

@@cowyemrsox thank you for this feedback! I'm by no means a trained musician so would struggle to provide sheet music. I do experiment with arrangements and harmonies on a piano before "transcribing" to Game Boy or NES, it's a great way to get inspiration.

Great lively remix! I did a 2a03 cover of this song for a romhack in the past and it was tricky to condense all the elements down to 3 melodic channels effectively, mine ended up a lot more mellow. Good work mixing in all the backing sounds - the arpeggio chord playing call-and-response with the main melody works especially well here, and your extra sections fit right in.

@@IGLima13 Nice remix, good instrumentation, I like the chill vibe (triangle channel bass helps with that) and the grace notes on the "chorus". Indeed, it's tricky to fit all harmonic details of this tune in just a few channels. I almost always reach for my arpeggio crutches.

Were all of the remixes for the Somari hack made by you? Going through the playlist now, they sound great.
@IGLima132 күн бұрын
@@notube4me Thanks! Yes they were all done by me, though a different hacker handled the actual audio driver programming For both stylistic and technical reasons we actually avoided arpeggios for that specific hack. Very fun and useful composition tool on these low-channel PSGs though, especially on the GB where they play well with the forced hardware envelopes and click-prone nature of the chip. Busier arrangements play to the GB's strengths imo

Would love to get another DMG gameboy at some point, or at least a pocket. I love the color and GBA, but there's just something so cool about the first few. I have a DMG in storage, but there's a mass of dead pixels on the screen. I could probably fix it. I think the screen is connected with ribbon cables IIRC, so it shouldn't be TOO hard.
@notube4me13 күн бұрын
Yes, I love the weight, size, and feel of the DMG. The sound is also thicker than on the GBC. Fortunately my trusty old DMG only has a few vertical strips of dead pixels on each side, they don't hinder gameplay.

Great remix! I wanted to look into how your xm2gb program works but I can't seem to get it to compile. Do you think you could tell me the prerequisites I need on my Windows machine, or perhaps distribute some pre-compiled binaries?
@notube4me13 күн бұрын
@@AlexParr thanks, I can look into that. Back in the day I used to cross-compile binaries for Windows.
@notube4me13 күн бұрын
I added a link to a Windows 64-bit binary in `README.md` in the xm2gb branch, can you give that a try? I used MinGW-w64 to compile it. MinGW-w64 is available for Windows hosts too; check "Downloads" --> "Pre-built toolchains and packages" on their homepage. You could try Cygwin or LLVM-MinGW, for example. When cross-compiling on Mac, the only thing I had to change in the xm2gb Makefile was the compiler, by adding this line: CC = x86_64-w64-mingw32-gcc but if you're compiling on Windows, this isn't necessary so long as MinGW is the default compiler. Good luck!

How did you get it to work
@notube4me13 күн бұрын
@@gamingtails1992 I used tools on my Mac to compose the music and create a Game Boy ROM file. I copied the ROM file to an SD card that plugs into a so-called flash cartridge (same size as a normal cartridge) that can be played on an ordinary Game Boy. Does that answer your question? Happy to provide more details
@gamingtails199213 күн бұрын
@notube4me cool so a game boy cartridge exists that only plays live and learn. Intresting and cool
@notube4me13 күн бұрын
@gamingtails1992 with a flash cart, you can copy thousands of files onto the SD card. When the Game Boy starts up, there is a menu where you choose which file to play. There is a link to such a popular flash cart ("EverDrive") in the description. But yes, it would also be possible to (mass-)produce normal cartridges that only play this remix, so that people don't have to mess around with a flash cart. Because of potential copyright issues with the owner of the original song, I would not want to sell such cartridges.
