Thanks for inspiring us with the videos. Lots of introspection are evident in your videos and it is helping us to imagine how the students and the teacher-facilitators are working together to learn from each other and help the students during the process. I am a teacher-facilitator and want to improve my way of conducting class for my design undergraduates.❤

Thank you so much brother. I am happy to know that somehow I am being of help to anyone. My first goal was to mainly document my process as a designer and part of it as a teacher. I always tell my students that I don’t see myself as a teacher. I am just more experienced than them and still learning. That should explain a lot of introspection in my videos, plus I am a very nostalgic person. I always want to go back and appreciate what I was thinking, cringe on it haha, admit mistakes and somehow still build on it. Thanks again for the feedback.

The light in that building is just stunning. To think that the architect achieved so much with basically a single type of brick and a few wooden features is almost unbelievable. Astonishing.

Hope to see the important lessons of Locsin's buildings in relation to Philippine culture and architecture in the coming weeks! It's important to note that although brualism is international by nature, Locsins buildings like what Fernando Zobel said "had a distinct Philippine look to it, which in those days came as a total surprise." Once your students start to apply ideas of Philippine archaeology, history, folk architecture, music and Philippine modern art - and use brutalism as the medium, they'll start to realize what Locsin is all about!! There's a study about the bipolarity present in the Architecture of Locsin by Caryn Paredes-Santillan published in Google Scholar, it's a must read! (a short one as well)

This made me claustrophobic 😅 The style leans a lot towards brutalist architecture. If you didn’t know the meaning behind it’s building, it has a depressing atmosphere 😅

I can see what you mean especially with some areas of the building. I particularly experienced this at the DAC in Copenhagen, also by the same design firm. The ideas are great but the execution can be quite challenging and I love how we can see it from a non-designer or non-architect point view. Thanks for sharing your observation .

Thank you for the nice visit! :) I enjoyed it a lot. I love this project since I first saw the competition results.. I'd love to visit it sometime, but since I live in Lisbon it's literally on the other side of the world! Who knows someday.. :) It was a pitty you couldn't show the public loop! Ironic.. the public loop was the only thing that was closed to the public.. (same thing happens in casa da música by the way.. in the first years everyone could freely wander around the building through the public loop. nowadays it's closed and can only be seen through organised visits.. very sad.. Regardind the corrugated glass: I think it was first used by OMA in the Casa da Música in Porto. I think they actually developed the material specifically for that project for acoustical reasons (the curvature of the glass gives it structural integrity, strenghening the large glass sheets (normal glass would bend to much and affect the sound negativelly, making the acoustics terrible..). Also the curvature(s) are meant to reflect sound in homogenous ways inside both auditoriums at casa da musica. Turns out the technical requirements for this glass also made it super cool to look at! :) Keep up your cool visits :) Greetings from Portugal

@archilablife Жыл бұрын
Thank you for enjoying my visit. Yes, I make it a point to have a pilgrimage to OMA's works since he is one of the most influential architects today. I didn't notice the public loop at Casa De Musica since I was in a formal guided tour, or maybe I wasn't listening and dorking out on the details and space haha. It was 2019 when I saw OMA's Porto's work and honestly, I dont remember the loop explicitly expressed like this one of TaipeiPAC, which is loud red, lighted and shouting at your face, like a diagram in 3D that says I am a passageway - suggesting the "loop." It will be nice to make the public wander freely as an idea and i could only guess why it is not the case anymore. It will be nice to find out...and hopefully architects work around it to make it happen in future projects. And yeah, I didn't know about the technical features of the corrugated glass. I learned from you! Now that you mentioned it, we can say that the 'technical functions of his materials are really a form of an aesthetic expression. Thanks again for viewing. Cheers from the Philippine Islands.

Sir Jim. I am a 4th year arki student. I just want to say that I am very greatful that I found your YT Channel during the pandemic. It's a treasure for every arki students like me. It is unfortunate that we are back on face-to-face classes because your Zoom lectures with your students, helped me understand so many confusions and taught me sooooo much than any of my classes, no kidding. If only money wasn't a big issue for me, I would be more willing to restart my arki education in Benilde.

For now, I want my viewers to enjoy my design tours of top architecture as if I am bringing you guys there. After you graduate, you will find these really interesting and helpful as the buildings I visit introduce new ideas in design of buildings. Thanks again

it's also interesting how the panel sizes of the glass and aluminum for the building envelope are done the most efficient modular way, probably with minimal cuts, and just folding the full size panels for most of the plant boxes
@archilablife
@archilablife Жыл бұрын
Yeah. Still feels humongous. I felt a bit alienated with the scale but I think that is part of what makes it unique. The modules can work both ways. Collectively it is expresses monstrosity/- since there are just so many of them. As a detail, it breaks the sheer size of it. The effect of the modules against the sun is not seen. It would have been dramatic if the weather was cooperative. Even if it is gloomy, in person, it is quite striking.

Wow it's interesting to have this journey of discovery for us through your camera! What an experience! All these experiences including arrival and clarity of access is a lesson for us designers. Glad you enjoyed it! That’s my goal. Raw vlog for the raw experience of the raw state of the architecture. RAWr! Hahah on a serious note, I kind of like the foliage.
