There are about 15 species of horsetails, all belonging to the genus Equisetum. They are divided into two main subgenera: Equisetum (common horsetails): Includes species like Equisetum arvense (field horsetail) and Equisetum telmateia (giant horsetail). Hippochaete: Includes species like Equisetum hyemale (rough horsetail) and Equisetum variegatum (variegated horsetail). Stay away.

"survival" table?!?! It's a table. No man died in God's wilderness for lack of a table. If only I had a pretty-much level surface upon which to place things. Guess I'll die? Still a nifty table.

Charcoal is technically neutral in its pure form. It is ash that you should add not charcoal.

I'll have to grab some and make tea. We've got a bunch of that right now as well as other medicinals right now. Finally realized we have lots of "Self Heal"/"Heal All" and that's pretty good stuff too.

The flower is sweet and flavorful. The leaves are mild as far as greens go. I put them in my smoothies, as cooked greens, and have no problem eating them raw. They are a bit chewyful, but not compared to a lot of others. They are a choice green in my book. I'll have to put more attention on the flowers. 👍

I read a lot of manga where someone is suddenly thrust into another world, often into the wilderness or ancient times. And I have always wondered, how are they washing their hands and using the bathroom? And thinking I couldn't survive in that scenario. So I'm glad to have this knowledge in case of a sudden isekai experience. I'd also be really interested to see a culture test of how much bacteria this soap kills.

Charcoal is not very alkaline and thus it cannot convert fat into saponins. You need to add campfire ash to the soap as well if you want to make actual soap. Careful not to add too much, because then it will be too alkaline and will burn your skin and make it dry and prone to damage and infection. If you accidentally add too much and notice your soap burns your skin, you can melt it back and add some sour fruit or plant juice like suring or redwood sorrel juice to balance it out. Add horse chestnut meat, husk, and shell pieces to your soap(you can take them out after boiling) to make it more effective. The same can be done with Yucca leaves. You can also make your soap into antibacterial and antifungal soap by adding yarrow, mugwort, and/or umbellularia to your soap. This type of soap however will be bad for your skin if applied oftenly and should only be used to cleanse wounds/hands after particularly dirty tasks.

Make sure your pot is stainless steel and NOT aluminum. If the pot has any AL in it, your ash/water mix (homemade Lye) will dissolve it.

Nice video. Most people don't realize most greens are well above 10% protein per calorie, which plenty for human needs. Don't fall for the protein hype, this has been debunked repeatedly!! Check out Dr Greger if you want to see the science.

Just saw this and it's 8 years old. I didn't even have internet! Anyway great presentation of true wilderness soap. My question is amounts of each? Trying to estimate watching it looks like 3 tbs fat, 2 tbs needles, 1 tbs charcoal and 2 tbsp water. There was some water added to lye and some in the pot. Not sure of those amounts maybe it doesn't matter but wanted to get it close

It's easy to spot the differences in the 2nd year of growth. I wish you'd show the 1 yr plants. No flower makes it tough to tell the differences.
