Forgot to ask even though you have conditional visibility column on the workshop, in order to view the object set they would need at least view to the backing dataset right? So if they go to files and search around they could get to the dataset and see the salary?
@joshmiller3448
@joshmiller3448 22 күн бұрын
Hey! You're correct -- in this example, even if a non-admin user won't be able to see the salary column in the Workshop app, they will still be able to see the salary values if they open the backing dataset itself. To prevent non-admin users from going this route but still have the salary property visible to admins, you'd want to implement a multi-datasource object type (MDO) pattern where salaries are stored in a separate dataset with two columns (e.g., employee_id and salary) and you'd remove the 'salary' column from the main dataset that everyone else has access to. You would then apply a marking on the Salary dataset such that only admins are members of that marking, meaning no one else can see it and its contents. An alternative option is to use Cipher (and maybe Checkpoints) which will encrypt the values in the salary column both in the actual dataset and in Ontology-aware applications (e.g., Workshop, Object Explorer, Quiver, etc.). This approach is slightly more complicated -- it involves severing permissions in the pipeline, applying markings to raw/upstream/sensitive data, creating Cipher channels, Cipher decryption conditions, etc. -- but is also a completely valid method and is preferred in certain use cases (e.g., customer service representative receives a call, looks up the customer's information, and has to submit a quick real-time request to decrypt the customer's email address in order to send a follow up).

@@joshmiller3448 thank you for the detailed explanation. I was looking into MDO and seemed like a fairly simple way to secure data in columns. I saw y’all’s video on cipher a while back and it was a bit over my head then but I’ll have to relook. Would MDO be appropriate to use to secure PII?
@joshmiller3448
@joshmiller3448 14 күн бұрын
@@dkfresh6656 Yup, MDOs are appropriate for securing PII (same with Cipher). Note that to make MDOs properly effective, you will need elevated permissions to create and apply Markings on the relevant backing dataset(s) that contain the PII.

Hello again. I was following along with some data I’m working with in excel. When I got to the part to cast to different types the values are going null. The values are dollar amounts but uploaded as a string. When I try to cast to double the whole column goes to null. Tried decimal as well. Any ideas on how to get around this? Thanks!
@GenaCoblentz
@GenaCoblentz 2 ай бұрын
Hi! Do the columns have any non-number characters in them? One thing you can try before you cast to a double is a regex replace to remove all non-number values from the column.

I’m trying to understand the cost implications of using virtual tables in Palantir Foundry related to storage. If a virtual table points to external data and I create an object from it in Foundry, does this resulting object then get stored in Foundry, incurring additional storage costs?

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I would love to see a deep dive into the most useful, complex, and obscure transformations that can be used in Pipeline Builder. Anything that can make data cleaning easier would be greatly appreciated. For context, I will be doing a lot of data normalisation (e.g., using suppliers' names from different business units and normalising them so they can all link to a single output for analysis). Finding a logical way to obtain the most output data per supplier normalised link using only Foundry has been challenging for me as a Foundry novice.

Hello! Thank you for the video... question... is there any resource or training that goes over updating the backend data sets? For example, if a user was updating their database? Is there a UI in Envision that allows for them to update their database if they aren't familiar with how to use it?
@HansCNelson

Thanks walking through all of this, especially w/ the modifications from the existing training curriculum as it stand today. I was able to follow along and complete everything perfectly using the code for the Rest API that you showed. On a separate note, are there any trainings or other UI tools in the works to help new users navigate the AIP platform a little easier? Navigating from screen to screen is fairly easy when following along with a tutorial, but I do find myself getting lost easily when trying to explore things on my own.

It's funny that this training video was posted only a month ago and there are already changes to the system that make it *slightly* outdated (e.g., order of menu options). No need to update yet, but I bet quarterly updates will be worth considering.
