I suspect this is my issue. I pulled the plug on a trip to be safe. I have been hoping to find a video with some footage of the actual noise. I have made some of mine and will likely post a video to help fill the void out there. I would describe the sound Im hearing from the drivers side reminds me of a popcorn popper. Does not change with acceleration/Increased RPM. Seems to run fine other wise. Just concerningly noisy. And when I put my hand on the cover I believe I can feel something bouncing around in there. If I can get the camera in there and demonstrate the view through the hole of a missing or dislodged baffle I will prior to removing the cover. Otherwise I will show both side by side. Assuming that ends up being the problem. But I am optimistic. Good job with your explanation.

@@ericinalaska7648 I hope your issue is solved with the valve cover swap as well. It never occurred to me to make a video until I discovered what the problem was and how little information there was online about this happening. It would be great to have someone post some video of the actual noise.

@@fixedit1649 I haven't tore into it yet. There was fishing that needed to happen. With or without the motorhome. I'll get to it pretty quick here though and hopefully it's the same issue. I have been wondering though. Seems like a well documented some what common issue. Do you know if re adhesiving the baffle, assuming it's not damaged, Is a thing?

@@ericinalaska7648 On the E450 that I have it was enough of a pain to get the valve cover off that I would recommend just getting a new one. Ford redesigned the part and now heat welds the baffles to the valve cover.

@@fixedit1649 So getting back to this finally. Ive used up most of my excuses at this point. I was able to detach the cover and lift it up to as you know, learn there is not enough room to simply lift and slide it out and slide a new one in. I was considering detaching the motor mount on the side of concern, drivers, and seeing if letting the engine drop on that side will give enough room. A buddy suggested pos removing a few bolts on the cab and lifting the cab on that side to get the inch or so needed. I recall last time I watched, yo mentioned removing the fuel rail(s) . Was that all you did and it was plenty at that point? Or were the coil packs in the way? Or did you try anything that in hind sight was a waste of time and effort? Really seemed like a pretty simple straight forward swap. But once I lifted the cover and started trying to get it out of there. Not so much.

I had a constant tap tap tap suddenly coming from the V-10 on our motorhome engine after a rough road transit. Would not increase in sound, but remained constant. No codes or diminished engine operations. After running toward home from California I stopped overnight in Arizona. Next morning I started the engine and it sounded like the engine was going to fall apart with loud clanging noises. I thought the engine was shot. Then suddenly about 20 seconds later it cleared up totally and the engine ran perfectly and quitely 2000 miles all the way home with no noises at all! I think I have this exact problem and will attempt to remove the cover myself and verify this is the same problem, which so far I am convinced it is. A Ford truck dealer wanted $8000 as he said he'd have to remove the heads just to assess the problem. Many thanks for the video! I hope this is exactly my problem!

@@fixedit1649 Right valve train was seriously damaged. I pulled the valve cover and found a cam follower laying agains the side of the valve cover and a missing lifter. Towed it to a Ford truck center 100 miles away and they found a damaged cam shafte , metal (lots of it) in the oil filter and oil. Wound up with a new remanufactured engine

Thanks for the super useful video, that had to be so hard to find - This morning it i got a ticking sound also not tied to RPM. Happens when at constant speed or accelerating but it stops immediately if i let go of the gas. Is this similar to your experience - what year is your ford, ours is a 2016, wondering what year ford improved the cover. Thanks a bunch

Found couple of items in the comments - you have a 2011 and another person had the same issue on a 2016 - will see if i can feel the knock at idle - unfortunately it started on my way to storage so it will be a couple of months :(

Quick question when it was knocking while driving would the knock go away while under load? Mine is doing the same one mechanic said it was a spun bearing but I feel like it’s in the valve train
@fixedit1649
@fixedit1649 Жыл бұрын
Knock was not noticeable while driving. I could hear it clearly while idling. If you hare having the same issue the dead giveaway is the vibration you can feel while touching the valve cover with the engine running. Do this check on the rear of the motor with the engine cover off from inside the vehicle to avoid sticking your hand anywhere dangerous on the front of the motor.

So awesome, I have exact same issue and thought it might’ve been a plastic piece or a nut from a rodent that made a nest on the engine. Stoked it’s not a cam roller or something more technical and intrusive.

Ford's part number is 6582. I had the exact same problem; this video saved my ass. Specifically, part number DC2Z-6582-D for my 2006 6.8L V10 Ford E450, but this part should fit years 2004-2015.

@@fritzywolf Thanks for including the part # and info. I’m glad the video helped. I couldn’t just turn the RV over to a shop without investigating the noise and I was so relieved to find that it was just the valve cover failure. I also couldn’t believe that there were no other videos about this problem with as many v10s as there are out there.
