Why doesn't El cheapo manufacturers of Radio Flyer go to the 5/8s ball bearing pneumatic tires instead of the cheap crap they are selling, in other words a 5/8s axle instead of the inferior 1/2 inch? I hate company's that pull this kind of cheapo non changing crap! You can't change their inferior design without major complications! I tried doing what you did 6 years ago with destroying the wagon!

This video and all the comments really helped me out. I wanted to upgrade the wheels on our Radio Flyer ATW and I was able to buy the tires, make a trip to Lowes and complete it just in time before a big outing with our kids. Thank you!

Great ideas....thanks for this video! I'm refurbishing a 28 y/o Radio Flyer that belonged to my daughter(planning to give it to my great nephew). The original tires appear to be in very good condition(and I'm trying to keep it "original), however, this video gives me another option to consider. I'm a female(with only minimal tools and experience), so I'm not sure I could cut the tubing(adapters/spacers) to convert to the 5/8 ball bearing hubs. I may try to load up the wagon with some bricks or something and give it a roll down my driveway(lol). My great-nephew is a PISTOL BALL, so I need the "re-do" to be very sturdy! By the way...there's a good VIDEO on the RADIO FLYER SITE that shows an easier way to remove those wheel hubs. (Just an FYI).

You can also replace the harbor freight 5/8 bearings with 1/2 bearings. just measure the OD of the bearing after taking the wheel apart. to make sure. you should be able to get them an independent lawn & garden dealer. you should be able to order them through Jacks small engine. stens outdoor products and Oregon outdoor products The Oregon 1-3/8 OD x 1/2 ID, .527 width part number is 45-012 the 1-1/8 OD x 1/2 , .437 width part number is 45-112 and 1-3/8 x 1/2 ID, .487 width I would think one of those would work.

Wow! Thanks for the info. Is this adaptor....that little 2-inch long tubular piece? I'm a female with a small, basic tool set....trying to refurbish a 28 y/o Radio Flyer wagon. The original tires on mine seem to be fine, but I like the idea of the larger tires.
@kylemckee75466 жыл бұрын
If you're able to actually find them in stock, yes that's what you're looking for. If not, I used 1/2" copper pipe on our wagon and it worked just fine.

Thanks for the tip! Picked up several Hillman brand ID 1/2", OD 5/8" at Lowes and they worked great. Copper pipe was the other option I was going to use.

Very helpful video, but now I'm conflicted: do I try to maintain the classic look with the original tires, or go for the pneumatic wheels that provide a better ride? I have only one wagon, so I need to make a choice!

Arnie E: Same exact problem, Arnie! I have a 28 y/o Radio Flyer wagon I'm trying to refurbish for my great-nephew. It rolls pretty smoothly and the tires are okay....but he's a rambunctious little PISTOL BALL....so I'm debating about the tires. What did you decide? I guess you could KEEP the original tires and put them back on the wagon....if you ever wanted to sell it or make it original. Would this work??

I have a Radio Flyer town and Country wagon the same wheels i want to make it a vacation ready for the beach as i plan to put the Wheeleez low pressure balloon wheels on as i think Wheeleez makes axle extensions to use the stock wagon undercarriages wi ch i want to keep the original radio flyer parts instead of using the Wheeleez wagon conversion kit. which can be used on all wagons, dumping wagons and steel mash deck wagons. as its a 1980s radio flyer town and country as ill have to use longer bolts and spacers if required to lower the axle brackets, stays or steering unit for the clearance required for the Wheeleez wheels as it will let the wagon roll on sand and soft turf easilly this year 2017 Radio Flyer is 100 years old as it was founded in 1917 when Antonio Pasin made the first wagon called the Liberty Coaster then according to Radio flyer's site they made various wagons throughout the years. the site is www.radioflyer.com and the wheeleez wheels www.wheeleez.com

I did it. Pretty easy just take the old wagon with you to Harbor Freight to be sure the wheels clear.
@valeriegriner56446 жыл бұрын
Good idea! Thanks. Question: could I save the original wheels if I ever want to convert the wagon back to its original style? You didn't do anything to the axle or original parts....right? You simply adapted the 5/8" wheels. I think this is right. I'm 61....and perhaps a bit too "nostalgic"(vs being practical).I miss the "good ole days!"

@PaulRentz7 жыл бұрын
Check the wheel clearance to be sure- bring your wagon with you there. I'm not sure what size those are, but these sure work great if they fit. See Eric's idea for the spacers if those are 1/2" axles.
@ericpolandart7 жыл бұрын
I wanted to tell you that this video helped me out so much. I went to Harbor Freight and bought the tires, then went to Home Depot thinking that they have to have a spacer. Well, I found a solution. I bought 1/2x10' CPVC flowguard gold pipe for $3.98 plus tax. I cut part of it into 2" section, sliced part of it with garden shears to get the spacer over the axle. I hand to sand down the pvc spacer sum to get the 10" tire over the spacer. It worked great, and a much cheaper solution. Hope the helps people with the spacer issue.
@PaulRentz7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Your comment may help Richard Conroy out, I'll let him know what you found out. Yeah, it's not that hard but I do recommend taking the wagon with you to see how it will work BUT the main this is, with ball bearing hubs the spacers don't have to be perfect, the wheel just has to fit over them. Just so everyone knows, this is what Eric bought- www.homedepot.com/p/Charlotte-Pipe-1-2-in-x-10-ft-CPVC-SDR11-Flow-Guard-Gold-Pipe-CTS-12005-0600/100170202

This is great, but the spacer issue is huge. Many radio flyer wagons are 1/2" axles, and saying "I found something at my local habitat for humanity that's 5/8" pretty much kills this project. Like we don't live near your HfH. So what can I buy at Lowes or Home Despot that's 5/8" OD and 1/2" ID that can be a shim for 10" Harbor Freight wheels? What's in the plumbing or electricial or hardware section that will work? Without standard consumer info that's available to everyone, this video ain't much help. I've tried shimming stuff and it has problematic results.
@PaulRentz8 жыл бұрын
Shimming is not a problem here as long as the tubing or whatever you use fits snug inside the hub of the Harbor Freight wheels- they're ball bearing wheels. You can 'freeze' the hubs for even better results as the hub of those wheels ride on the ball bearings. Just take a wheel into any hardware store, grab a 1/2 bolt from another section and if you find tubing that fits snug on the wheel hub but is loose on the axle you're still fine. Shim that tight and you're all set. Don't give up, it works great! (Yes, I think all the Radio Flyer axles are 1/2 inch.) So just take a wheel with you, that's what I did- I was up against the same thing you're mentioning- I just didn't give up.
@PaulRentz7 жыл бұрын
Richard, check Eric's idea above, I think that would work for you too, pretty easy fix! This is what Eric bought- www.homedepot.com/p/Charlotte-Pipe-1-2-in-x-10-ft-CPVC-SDR11-Flow-Guard-Gold-Pipe-CTS-12005-0600/100170202

Correct, I'm not sure other hardware stores will carry them- we have one 'old-time' hardware store, over 100 years in business- and they had them for 50¢ each. This is our local store that had them- ww3.truevalue.com/robnetts/Home.aspx

Wish there was an exact source for the 1/2 to 5/8" spacer.
@PaulRentz8 жыл бұрын
Since this is a 'ball bearing' hub, it didn't really matter, it rotates away from the hub. As long as you can jam something to keep it tight and prevent 'wobble'. Unlike the OEM replacement wheels, they'll still turn more smoothly than the originals. If you did find them (Lowe's had something close) they added as much per hub as the cost of the wheels.

Hi, I know I am late to this video and at the risk of sounding dumb (I am a novice DIY'er), if it was possible to locate a pneumatic tire with a center that fits this 1/2" axle then that would leave me in the clear of trying to locate spacers, shimmies, etc...correct? I came across a website (www.grainger.com) and they look to carry pneumatic tires of all sizes and varying axle diameters. They're online only, with pick-up/shipping options but not a retailer. I wanted to get your opinion before I dove into this project as I have limited knowledge of hardware and such. Thanks in advance.
