Exquisite! I never listened to Ponselle's "home" recordings, afraid that like Melba and Patti, it would show a sad decline from former greatness. Boy, was I wrong! Now I need to find the rest of her recordings from those sessions!

This was, I think, the first classical song I can remember. I must have been about eight years old and it was sung in a school music competition. The words were very different, not romantic: Lonely woods, with paths dim and silent, a haunt of peace for weary hearted, there’s healing in her wings (or something like that). The song stuck with me from that time - I must have somehow already known that woods would be my greatest solace in adult life. Wish I could find a recording with those words, but this is wonderful.

IMHO Tancredi Pasero, Nazzareno de Angelis, Ezio Pinza are the best Basso singers of the last century.

The ultimate rendition....yes, Pavarotti, Corelli and Domingo were impressive in their vocal power....but Schipa was a true " tenore di grazie" impeccable diction and nuance.

To my ear, this is the single greatest instrument ever to be issued to a woman in recorded history. One could criticize her style or her pronunciation or the fact that she had a "short" top. But the voice itself is a once in a century phenomenon.

Amelita had apparently a tiny sweet voice, but this voice was able to penetrate each and every space in a concert hall. She was amazing. Than you so much for this post❤

I love this performance but early in her career Sutherland was better technically than this, especially in the acuti. It’s not just the recording. Ponselle’s top was suspect by her own admission. Ponselle was truly amazing but don’t just say things without doing research. She is screeching in places here and she always did. If you read about her training, She went into a practice room for 6 months then was thrust onto the stage with Caruso. She had amazing talent, voice, and musicianship but not the years of training she needed to have a secure instrument all the time. “O patria mia” was terrifying for her.

L'aria parrebbe abbassata perche' la Ponselle non poteva fare la cadenza col Re sopracuto.
